biographical account Biographical accounts as a workable strategy in educational research. Paper presented at the conference Directions in educational research: postgraduate perspectives, University of Who Makes the Final Decision? Leicester, 23-24 July 2003. Biographies reveal the relationship between the private and the public worlds individuals experience. The recording of these two structures in a personal document is the Jade, hallmark of the biographical method (Merrill, 2002). In qualitative research, biographical methods have been widely used. However, traditional methodology textbooks have paid little tribute to this.
It is not until the last fifteen years that biographical research has been regarded more seriously as a method. As more emphasis was put into biographies and collection of life stories, biographical accounts began to be seen as points of research and discussion and not merely as components of any other ?serious? method (Roberts, 2002). This change has been registered as the the Final Essay, ?biographical turn? in social research. The fields of study where biographies have been used have also been extended within the social sciences; however, most of the studies were conducted under positivist approaches. As the coca relationship, contexts and disciplines where biographical research was used expanded, this gave it a more interdisciplinary character. One of the areas where it has been fruitful covering topics like schooling experiences, teachers? careers and lives, is education. The biographical or narrative turn has had an the Final Essay impact on the ways in of Peony, which educational experiences, processes and policies are researched and understood (Coffey, 2001: 6).
The classroom, the school structure, teachers? experience in the educational systems and Who Makes the Final Decision? students? achievement, for example, had already been focus of hobbesian state of nature study, however, now they were analysed under different approaches It would appear that the telling of a story about a life has become an important aspect of practice and research in Who Makes the Final, professional teaching and other settings (Riessman, 1993: 5-6 in Roberts 2002: 23). Theoretically speaking, feminist theory also influenced the development of coca this research by appealing to the value of the Final Essay voice, consciousness raising and empowerment. The insights of the women?s movement began to have a transformative effect on fields such as oral history and women?s experience were accorded value and writers began to regard oral accounts as means of recording women?s social and historical experiences (Gluck and Patai, 1991:1 in Roberts 2002: 29). In my interest to explore students? identity and the interrelation of Global Effects Essay this with their educational experience, using a biographical account sounded promising. As well as documenting individual lives and identities, the biographical turn in sociological enquiry provides a strategy for exploring personal histories and biographies, as well as the relationships between structure and agency in contemporary society (Coffey, 2001: 54). Using this approach could open a window to try and see how students? (re)constructed their identity as they went through university life. Biographical research is part of Who Makes the Final Essay a movement to reveal and Global understand the ?personal? and its interlinking with the Decision? Essay, immediate and wider social context and political practices (Roberts, 2002: 31). It could also provide me with a wider vision on the different agendas students have in their daily life as they go through university education.
What would the what shakespeare, biographical accounts reveal about the Who Makes the Final Essay, ways students construct their identity? This was one of the key questions throughout my study. In order to present my experience using the biographical method, I will divide this paper into shakespeare, five sections. First, I will first present a general theoretical support for the use of the biographical method in researching identity in educational contexts. The Final! Second, I will write about the f.r. leavis, context of the Final my study and the aims for conducting it.
Third, I will write about the methodology followed specifically to collect the students? accounts. Fourth, I will discuss the pros and cons I have experienced with the approach. And finally, I will present some preliminary findings of my research. The biographical approach. The term biographical research is used to refer not to one approach to research but to a different range of similar approaches, whose main field of study is ?lives?. Biographical research is an exciting, stimulating and f.r. leavis fast-moving field which seeks to understand the changing experiences and outlooks of Decision? individuals in their daily lives, what they see as important and how to provide interpretation of the account they give of their past, present and future (Roberts, 2002: 1). The methodology I used to and Ramifications Essay collect the students? accounts is guided by this concept.
The definitions of the the Final, biographical method as well as materials relevant to study with this approach vary. The definition of biographical research I have used in my study follows the lines of Roberts (2002: 3) where the term is used to denote work which uses stories of individuals and other ?personal materials? to understand the individual life within its social context. The type of accounts students produced for my research fall within this category of ?personal materials?. Coffey?s (2001) notion of Jade biographical research complements this definition by identifying the the Final Decision? Essay, centrality of individual experiences as mechanisms for illuminating social processes in educational settings. According to her, biographical research has its emphasis on state of nature how social actors routinely engage in educational contexts and how they articulate and make sense of these experiences. Sarantakos?s (1994) version of biographical accounts identifies two elements: how the authors define themselves and social action and how their individuality is influenced by Essay, social factors. The first element relates to the way people perceive and interprets the shakespeare, world around them. The second element talks about the relations between their opinions and their social environment. In my research, I was interested in finding a way that would allow me to see some connections between the university experience and the way students formed their identity.
To this particular interest, I found the biographical method enlightening. On one hand, you could see, through the Who Makes the Final Essay, student?s pieces of writing, how they read the world around them, their perception of reality. On the other hand, it could also offer some insights into hobbesian state of nature, how their opinions were influenced by the social environment of which the university and Who Makes Decision? Essay they were part of. Now, how could the students? accounts based on their life experience at the university offer some insight into the way they constructed their identity? Biographies and identities in Causes and Ramifications War I Essay, an educational research project.
Identities are negotiated and biographies constructed through school processes, learning encounters, and Who Makes Decision? Essay curricular engagement. In turn, the War I Essay, articulation and representation of selves in educational settings can be challenged, change, resisted or accepted (Coffey 2001: 53). Essay! The relationship between biographical research and identity is important since most debates on the condition of identity construction in our times are developed in the field of abstract theory (Roberts, 2002). Therefore, a study on identity which explores the ?lived lives? becomes appropriate and state of nature relevant. Studying through biographical accounts how identities are constructed opens up a space for Who Makes Essay insights into how factors like space, organizations and Causes and Ramifications Essay other social structures like youth and Who Makes the Final Decision? Essay gender groups participate in of Peony, this identity or identities? formation. In my study, in particular, the university is considered as a site of identity formation by offering a spatial, organizational and grouping structure for the Final students, educational arenas form important sites for the active engagement of identity and biographical work (Coffey, 2001: 53). Educational research in colleges and universities in the last 20 years has primarily been focused on academic achievement and students? attitudes and aspirations (Pascarella and shakespeare Terenzini, 2001).
With the emerging interest in biographical work, schools, and other educational arenas, have increasingly been seen as sites for Who Makes Decision? Essay the active construction, production and reproduction of biographies and identities. Hence life histories, biographical data and personal narratives have been collected and analysed as mechanisms for understanding the lived realities of schools and of teaching (Coffey, 2001: 55). In most of the studies conducted using the biographical method, however, the interest has been put on the teachers? agenda: academic identity, racial and gender issues (Goodson 1997; Munro 1998; Weiler and Middleton 1999 cited in Coffey, 2001). My study, on the other hand, focuses on the students? identity. In order to better contextualise the use of the biographical method in my study, the Causes and Ramifications of World War I, next section details the aims and context of my research. Aims and context of my research. Who Makes The Final Decision?! The motivation for my research sprung up from my experience in teaching university students in Mexico and working for two types of Jade of Peony Essay universities, a public and Who Makes the Final Decision? a private one.
The way students saw themselves as part of the University and how they carried and showed this way of seeing themselves throughout their time there always struck me as interesting. The way the University experience became central at certain point in their lives was also intriguing. Finding out what the students as related themselves to higher education and cola marketing how they valued it guided the key questions in my study. The Final Decision? Essay! A focal aim in my study was to find out how students created and (re)created their identity inside an educational institution and to what extent the university was involved in this issue of of World identity formation. I was not only interested in particular processes of identity formation but rather in developing a wider understanding of the role of higher education to shape the the Final Decision?, identity of people in state of nature, our society and Who Makes the Final Essay elaborate a more critical view of it. Context of study. The study was conducted in two universities in of World, the State of Nuevo Leon, Mexico; a private (ITESM) and Who Makes Decision? Essay a public one (UANL). The participants in the study included undergraduate students and academics. The group where I collected biographical accounts from was the students. The study comprised 365 students from Science and Social Sciences and in their second year of study. The idea was to get a purposive sample of students where both systems of education ?public and Essay private university- and at least two fields of science were represented.
I was also interested in students who would have been in Decision? Essay, the university for at Global Effects of Ozone Depletion, least one year so they would have already had a ?feel? for university life experience that they could write about. The following table sums up the sample of students in Decision?, my study: The higher education institutions in Mexico. The subjects: students from the areas of Science and Social sciences in both institutions. 365 Undergraduate students total. ? State-funded university: ? Privately-funded university: ITESM. The data collection was done in the university premises and in the following paragraphs I will explain how it was done. Description of the data collection and the educational biographical account. In order to collect information from students I used a technique which I called the educational biographical account. This method combined an information eliciting activity (word association) followed by an autobiographical account. The word association technique is one that I had extensively used as a teacher, mostly in language courses, to f.r. leavis elicit vocabulary. Guided by a grounded theory orientation in my methodology, I found it useful to get students to write about how they valued higher education departing from their own ideas rather than from topics induced by me.
I wanted to see what ideas they connected to higher education and this eliciting technique seemed to be a less intrusive or indirect way to do it. The purpose of its application is best described by Sarantakos (1994: 209) in his description of biographical methods, In the context of qualitative research, biographical methods attempt to present a perception of the self and the world from the viewpoint of the the Final Essay, author of the biography. This is how the technique was conducted. I asked students to write five words they related to the phrase university education ( educación universitaria in Spanish). After that, I asked them to explain why they had chosen such words and what they meant for them. State! An example of the technique I used can be seen on Who Makes the Final appendix 1. My intention was to find what ideas or themes emerged from their answers that would connect with issues on f.r. leavis identity construction. Before students started writing, I explained to them the aims of Who Makes Decision? my research trying to Causes and Ramifications War I get their writings directed towards my purpose.
I did this for ethical as well as for practical reasons so they would not write only isolated words with any connection. I also told them how I would be using their information keeping it confidential at all times. I have typed and analysed 365 documents in total; the amount of documents not processed was a low percentage and it was mainly due to inability to understand the students? handwriting or when the students failed to provide basic information that would allow a proper classification of the document. The Final Essay! In order to analyse my data I followed the f.r. leavis, process of qualitative analysis suggested by Who Makes the Final Essay, Miles and Huberman (1994: 10-12) which includes four basic principles: data reduction (through coding), data display and conclusion drawing and verification (for detailed information of the model see Miles and Huberman 1994). While typing the students? documents was a time consuming task it helped me elaborate the memos or commentary documents suggested by Miles and Huberman?s model for a preliminary analysis. I had originally planned using the qualitative research software NVIVO to facilitate the management of my data; at this moment, I am still evaluating its usefulness since the analysis I have conducted so far has been done manually. F.r. Leavis! One drawback I found using NVIVO was that entering the documents and codes could take a long time.
However, I still found it useful to manage the data. The fact that it can organise the data into big categories and be used to find correlation among data categories such as age, gender and field of study groups is a positive feature. Furthermore, its quantitative output of data could be used to complement a primarily qualitative analysis and this is the Decision? Essay, benefit I am planning to use in of nature, my research (Kelle, 1995). Challenges and benefits of dealing with data come at different times of the research process either with software or without it. From collection to data analysis they pose interesting questions and bring the research to new stands and ways to Who Makes the Final develop. In the following section, I will write about the challenges and benefits I have experienced using the f.r. leavis, biographical account. Challenges and benefits of using the biographical approach. As Silverman (2000) states, there are only ?useful? or ?more useful than? techniques to fit a theory and a methodology and it is important to address the issues and Who Makes the Final Decision? Essay limitations as well as the positive impressions experienced with a certain method.
The relatively new appearance of the biographical method as a trend in state of nature, social science research make it susceptible, as any other method, to Decision? Essay hard criticism in terms of lacking unity in its epistemological and methodological assumptions. This is in part due to its eclecticism in the way decisions are made as to what constitutes relevant material to study, how it is gathered and further on how it is analysed. This expansion of interest in the study of lives and the use of biographical material raises the immediate issue of whether there is really common ground ?in epistemology, methodology, interpretation and theoretical framework: a shared approach (Roberts 2002: 169). This biographical turn , as Roberts calls it, challenges the hobbesian of nature, researchers and the audiences to doing research in different ways; to exploring old concepts in new lights and to continue refining their methods of enquiry. It is in Who Makes Decision?, this fashion that emergent methodologies develop and become recognised; the biographical turn may just as well follow the same path. As mentioned above, one of the challenges associated with the biographical method is the variety of material it may cover. Although some clarifications have been made in hobbesian state, respect to some terms such as life history vs. The Final Essay! life story (Atkinson, 1998), the main term remains at times elusive of definition. Causes And Ramifications Of World! According to Miller (2000: 19) life history refers to a series of substantive events arranged in Decision?, chronological order.
Life story, on the other hand, refers to an account given by the individual without following a chronology. In my research, the type of material produced by students falls into this category. Although it is not written as a biography per se, it does include aspects of the cola relationship, students? lives as they go through university. The challenge here is to make the Who Makes the Final Decision?, material fit the description of a ?biographical piece? which in itself remains elusive in standard literature. An ethical and f.r. leavis epistemological issue arises with my accounts because I am giving students a central idea to Who Makes Essay write about, different from Effects of Ozone Depletion life stories. This is an advantage as well as a risk. By channelling their answers to one topic I make sure they write about Who Makes the Final Decision? Essay what my study is looking for; the other hand, I may as well be confining their writings to one particular aspect of their lives. The decision to conduct the of World War I, data collection this way foresaw these problems, however in the interest of practicality I decided to Who Makes the Final Decision? take that risk. Another challenge I faced with the educational biographical account was the fact that it was technique I had not used it before in coca marketing, doing social research but as a teaching tool. I was not sure if the writings were going to come out clear and focused. A pilot study using this technique could have been beneficial; unfortunately, practical issues like limited time and Who Makes the Final Decision? Essay budget would not allow me to do it.
The first groups I worked with had a rougher experience with a less focused explanation of what to coca cola relationship marketing do on Who Makes the Final Essay my part. I even changed the format of the activity later on as I realized there was some information I would need from students and I had not included that in the original format. This let me experience one of the benevolent sides of qualitative research where rewriting your process along the way is part of the research experience and opens a space for reflexivity, especially if novice in the field. Here also lies the basis for my argument that the state, flexibility of the Who Makes, biographical method to accept as valid a wide range of materials opens spaces for f.r. leavis innovation and development of the methodology itself. It offers a field where new methods can be tried out and the Final Essay the possibility to cola marketing explore social issues in a different light, from different angles, perhaps not yet explored. According to Amanda Coffey (2001:54), she agrees with Atkinson and Silverman (1997); Munro (1998); and Goodson (1992) in some of the the Final, potential problems one could encounter by using this approach: A danger in romanticising the individual and their stories in biographising the social and a possibility of missing the social contexts and processes by overly concentrating on the individual and the personal. By privileging certain voices and Causes and Ramifications of World War I Essay lives, you may be ignoring the lives and voices of others. In my study, I found that it is indeed easy to be let carried away by personal stories and miss the context. This would happen when the account I was analysing connected somehow with your own experience as a university student. However, ?situating the Essay, writings as voices of social actors?, when conducting the analysis, as the terminology goes, helps to f.r. leavis keep focused on Decision? Essay the social and the processes being researched. It is coca cola a constant reminder the researcher needs to keep in mind, though.
As to the privileging certain voices, I believe that is real challenge in most studies. The Final Essay! By concentrating in two universities only, I am aware I am leaving out the voices of those who go to vocational institutes and teacher training centres. I also know I am only getting the view of of Ozone Depletion a percentage of the Who Makes, student population. By describing the sample in my study and Jade Essay acknowledging its limitations I have tried to make justice to its partiality. With a vast universe like university students, aiming to get a purposive sample is as good as it gets once the limitations of the the Final Decision? Essay, study have been acknowledged. Although the field of War I Essay biographical research poses interesting challenges in Decision?, terms of interpretation and definition of its limits, its relevance in the development of qualitative methodology is notorious.
Biographical research has the state, important merit of Who Makes Essay aiding the task of understanding major social shifts, by including how new experiences are interpreted by individuals within families, small groups and coca cola institutions (Roberts, 2002: 5). This aspect relates closely to my area of study. Exploring how universities as social institutions influence the way students construct their identity brings up questions on how students interpret their experience within this social and dynamic setting. According to Who Makes Essay Goodson (1997, cited in Jade of Peony, Coffey, 2001) these are some of the benefits the biographical approach brings to research: It values personal experiences and individual voices as relevant and insightful ways of understanding the the Final Essay, everyday realities of education. It ensures that the backgrounds and experiences of the hobbesian state, individuals involved are treated seriously and that they are grounded in Who Makes Essay, their social, cultural and historical context. Jade Of Peony! It helps understand the relationship between the students? lifestyles, latent identities and cultures. Identities are complex, fragmented and shaped by Essay, understandings of lifestyle and culture.
Gathering students? narratives can help make sense of the complexity of their identity construction and culture. In my experience using the cola marketing, method, I could add that although the challenges of the approach are important and should be taken into account when doing the research, the richness in the data and the sense of reality you find as you read the the Final, documents makes it a valuable approach to follow. Needless to say, visiting the classrooms and talking about my research to Essay students was one of the most enjoyable parts of my fieldwork experience. The more I explained what my research was about the more I was convinced of the value of my project and the more refined my search for the Final Essay specific information became. Using this method helped refine, feedback and marketing develop my research project, an ongoing process most designs would aim for. A challenge in disguise had to do with the Who Makes the Final Essay, settings where I conducted the study. Having a captive audience guaranteed numbers of people answering my exercise, but not their willingness to do it.
Some of the texts I collected gave me the impression that students were only killing time by answering. Others showed rather shallow answers and limited themselves to write short answers unrelated to a lived experience. They were defining some words as if they were taking them out of a dictionary. At first sight, this may seem disappointing; however, it could also show me how interested students were in state of nature, giving their opinions, or at least, when being asked in that way. This opened my mind to thinking of ways to improve the technique by perhaps combining it with a more direct method like a person-to person interview as well as doing a pilot study to test it, as I mentioned before. All in all, the response I got was positive and it helped me see the degree of effectiveness and challenges my technique may have.
The classification and analysis of the data concluded with 365 documents. The results of the first codification suggested some general themes which I will share in the following section. Who Makes The Final Decision? Essay! Preliminary findings and implications. According to the students? views on higher education and how it relates to their lives suggest that education is primarily seen as: A factor for social mobility regardless of the students? economic background. Education is seen as a channel where students have deposited their aspirations for economic success. According to a study carried out in Mexico city, students from low income families face the dilemma of continuing with their studies or entering the labour market, 83% decides to continue with their studies (Valle and Smith). This shows the f.r. leavis, high value students give to education when regardless of the economic difficulties they might experience, the idea to Who Makes the Final Decision? continue with their studies is still a strong motivation for them.
Education as an individual project: Personal development. ?Personal development? was a popular answer in the students? writings yet with diverse connotations. Most students wrote about personal development and of Ozone Essay their meanings included being knowledgeable, cultivating their spirit, attaining success as professionals; for some female students it meant accomplishing something different as women in a masculine-dominant school or family. Education as an asset. The high value students give to university education, especially as something good for the future suggests that besides being an ideal it is also considered as a personal asset. Often students write about a ?brighter future? referring to the time in their lives after they conclude their studies. Who Makes The Final Essay! Their economic and professional aspirations are basically centered in getting their degree. They also write things like I know this is going to bring me benefits. Education as a family project.
The value for education is not only connected to an individual project but also to a family one. What! There are concerns of paying back to the parents, for example. In lower income families, in general, the values the family attributes to education are then channelled or indirectly imposed on those who can attend university. In most of the answers students gave about how they value education, the the Final, family connection is recurrent. Either if they feel grateful to their parents for paying for their education or because they want to reward in some symbolic ways what their parents have done for them. In the case of students who work or who are the bread-winner of the family the connection seems to be stronger since they feel the future of their children will also depend on the progress they make having a university degree.
It is important to Jade of Peony reflect on the stress that students undergo as being the depositary of family aspirations and hope for Who Makes Essay a better future. This influences the way they see themselves in Causes, the university context: similar to the Final Essay some, different from others and Jade of Peony Essay yet following the same path towards success through education. Who Makes The Final Essay! A sense of completeness. In the formation of their identity as individuals with a university degree, students see graduating from university as a step that makes them more complete human beings. Expressions like ?ser alguien en la vida? (?to be someone in life?; ?becoming someone?) suggest that there is a sense of not being if not educated.
There is a sense of emptiness in the person unless they have obtained a university degree. Shakespeare! It is as if the maxim ?I think therefore I exist? has become ?I am educated, therefore I exist. The socialization process students live in Who Makes Decision? Essay, the university is influenced by how much involvement they have in and Ramifications, the institution?s activities and how their interaction with peers is given. This in Who Makes Essay, turn has to do with the Causes and Ramifications War I, type of the Final Decision? Essay students they are, full time, part-timers, commuters, mature returning students, etc. The diversity in the student body calls for different steps of the socialization process to be experienced at different times and intensities. The type of citizen students feel they are has to Effects of Ozone Depletion Essay do with what image of an educated person their society supports. The way higher education in most parts of the world is operating being exclusive rather than inclusive suggests that a sense of incompleteness is bound to be prevailing in most young people. By far, this was the Who Makes Essay, favourite word in the study. Either referred to cola relationship directly or indirectly, status became the most popular word in their answers. The connections made with status vary and Decision? Essay they go from being a more educated person (?persona culta?), having a more privileged place in society, securing a better job and having a ?decent? post in Global Depletion, a company to being different from and Decision? Essay superior to the others (the uneducated ones). One interesting characteristic related to social class and the value given to education is that of class flight.
Education, for some, is a way of leaving a lower social class and stepping up to a higher one. While this is Global true for lower income students; students from high income families tend to also make a point about class and education by Who Makes the Final Decision? Essay, intending to hobbesian state of nature remain in the same class with the same high life standards. An academic credential would ensure better chances for a job and in times of crisis, if the possibility of losing economic capital was there. This is the case of many high middle class families in Mexico nowadays. For most lower class students, education is still a life-saving project, a way out and up the social ladder. The Final Essay! This notion prevails even when the devaluation of university degrees seems to be on the rise; paradoxically, credentials are a strong selection criteria in the job market and there are less and less jobs due to the economic crisis. Participation in society. By being educated individuals, students seem to feel that they can get more participation in society.
This is an f.r. leavis interesting finding because although they acknowledge they can have a more active participation in society, a minimal percentage of students would explicitly write about how they may get involved in the development of the country or their community. Most answers tend to point to an individualized vision of Who Makes Decision? being educated to succeed as an individual with minor connection to their community. This last theme brings attention to the discussion of what role education has in society and how much of the students? involvement is state encouraged or not through the university education practices. Working with a rather recent method in the area of educational research, has posed interesting challenges and rewards to my research. First the Decision?, issues associated with an elusive definition of valid material made me reflect all along the Jade of Peony Essay, research process on Who Makes Essay what I was using as material and why that constituted a valid one to explore.
Being able to test a technique as a new enquiry method was rewarding and the idea of perfecting it by doing a pilot study or combining it with another method has also become an interest for my future research. In terms of the research project in general, the results I have so far obtained suggest that through this approach one can engage in an analysis of students? experience through university by f.r. leavis, analysing their writings and ?reading through their lines? about Who Makes Essay how education plays an Essay important role in their identity formation in the Final Decision?, an ever-changing and ?hungry-for-titles? society. It is my belief that this study could not only encourage the use of influenced shakespeare biographical accounts as a research strategy but it could also motivate a critical view towards the Who Makes Decision? MIS Laboratory – Resources for Tech Faculty and Students MIS Laboratory – Resources for Tech Faculty and Students. Software, curriculum, career, contest, and news resources. Hosted by Randy Guthrie, PhD – Microsoft Technical Evangelist. How to Get a Job At Microsoft Part II: Writing an Awesome Resume. by Randy Guthrie Microsoft Academic Developer Evangelist. Over the past few months I visited nine college campuses, attended three conferences and conducted a hand-full of job interviews, and in Who Makes the Final Decision? the process I’ve seen scores of resumes. One thing I’ve been impressed with is how awful most of them are. Coca Relationship. I realize that I am probably jaded by my experience as a career coach and service at a community career center, but still I find it amazing that something that is Decision? Essay, so critical for getting a job is so poorly understood; particularly by those who need jobs the Essay, most ie: students seeking internships and new college graduates. The good news is Who Makes the Final Decision? Essay, that if you do even a moderately good job of writing your resume you have a pretty good chance of f.r. leavis, standing out from your competitors.
I’ve put off writing this post because it is a daunting task trying to write general guidance that will be useful to most readers, and I’ve struggled how to do this briefly, but I’ve given up and Who Makes Decision? apologize in advance for the length of this post and hope most will find something useful in the next few thousand or so words. Let me state that I recognize that there are many ways to write a great resume, and this is just one of those ways, but since this way has always worked so far for the folks I’ve helped, that’s what I’m sticking with. I also recognize that a resume is of World War I, very personal, and Who Makes Decision? you need to be comfortable with how it looks, so deviation from this guidance is fine (and necessary) since everyone is different and f.r. leavis some situations will need to be handled differently than shown below. If you have questions about a specific type of situation ASK IN A COMMENT TO THIS POST and I promise I will answer in an additional comment or even a follow-up post. Your questions will make this post even more valuable to everyone that reads it. First, some useful links:

Essay how to influenced prepare for a behavioral interview MIS Laboratory Student Page: lots of useful career links. Now let’s dig in. GENERAL FORMATTING PAGE LENGTH. One Page Please! Most managers will only Who Makes Essay, look at your resume for 15-20 seconds before deciding whether to keep reading or put your resume in f.r. leavis what I call “The Big Pile”. The Final. If you haven’t hooked the reader by then, you’ve lost the first round to someone who can tell their story succinctly. Two or three-page resumes do not increase your chances that the reader will find something interesting, it actually makes it less likely they will find (by scanning) something that they care about. Hobbesian. So try to Who Makes keep it to a page. I’ve never seen someone other than a college professor who needed more than one page to what shakespeare land an interview. White Paper Standard Fonts Unless you are a graphic artist, using colored paper, odd shapes fancy type fonts are not going to make the kind of impression that gets an interview. Who Makes Decision?. Superficial attempts to differentiate yourself can backfire, because the reader may assume you are childish, unprofessional, or don’t have any meaningful content.
Use the same type face throughout, but you can use different sizes and italics to make it easier to scan. Don’t go smaller than 11 pt font or larger than13 pt font for Essay the main text. The examples that follow will show when larger and smaller fonts are appropriate. There are two approaches that I like to use. Decision? Essay. The first is useful if you don’t have a lot of Jade of Peony, relevant experience and you are trying to fill space. While one of the examples show the hyperlink in Who Makes the Final Decision? blue, do not use colored ink when printing a paper copy of your resume. Of course if you provide an electronic copy of your resume, live hyperlinks can be useful and save the reader time if not used excessively. What. Your name and contact information should be grouped together.
I personally don’t like having a person’s name on the left and the contact information on the right. Essay. In the hobbesian of nature, example my name is 28pt and contact info is Essay, 11pt. You can go as low as nine point, but if space is an option use the coca marketing, two line format on Who Makes the Final Decision? the right. Two additional pieces of advice: (1) use only coca cola marketing, one phone number, and make sure it is one where you can get a message (change the recorded greeting if necessary so as to project a professional image) and (2) avoid cryptic or childish e-mail addresses, and use only one of those as well. Some career advisors will tell you not to put a career or employment objective statement. My advice is to use one. My reason is simple: I debriefed a recruiter from a major aerospace company after a job fair and he told me that he put any resume he received without a [clear] objective statement in the trash, because his HR department would not know where to route it. So my advice is to the Final Decision? Essay use one and make it count. Here’s how:
Your objective statement should say in of nature under ten words the the Final, kind of job you are looking for. For example: “Seeking a senior-level account executive position in the Pharmaceutical industry”. Do not use airy, empty, and vague statements that don’t say anything such as “seeking a challenging position with a leading company where my skills and strengths can be utilized”. You would be amazed at Global Effects of Ozone Essay, how many people think that is Who Makes the Final, what you are supposed to write. And Ramifications Of World Essay. I saw a resume written just this week that had an objective statement that said “To play a significant role in an organization that aspires to be extraordinary”. These kinds of statements don’t help and can actually delay the reader from learning anything of Who Makes the Final, value about you. But What If I’m Qualified for More Than One Kind of of Peony, Job? If you are going to Who Makes the Final Decision? Essay a career fair, then you should probably take several (three or four or even five) versions of your resume.
Most job fairs will list the companies and the jobs they are recruiting for of Ozone Essay in advance so if you are prepared, then you can know how many versions you should take. For example, you can have different resumes that focus on web development, database, or application development, information security, or telecommunications. If you are applying to Who Makes Essay a specific company, then you tailor the objective statement (actually the entire resume) for that specific job. If you are applying for an internship or job right out of college, your education is cola, your biggest selling point, so it needs to Who Makes the Final go before any previous work experience. Since most recruiters will know what school they are recruiting from, and name of the school is less important and the college major / minor and date of completion. Once you’ve graduated and are on Global Effects Essay the street, then where you went to school is more important than the Essay, major. Hobbesian State. Here is how I would handle both situations: In these examples, I put the degree major first, because that is the first thing a recruiter will care about.
I also put my my recent (and most impressive!) degree first. Notice I don’t put GPA. There are two reasons: 1) it clutters up the Decision? Essay, page with less-important information, and 2) unless you graduated with a 4.0, most people won’t think there is what influenced, much difference between a 3.5 and the Final a 3.8. If your GPA is less than a 3.6, it probably doesn’t differentiate you from Causes Essay, others, so leave it off unless an employer requires it. If your GPA is under 3.0, then I don’t have to explain why you would leave it off. If you graduated with honors, and Who Makes the Final Decision? it says so on your transcript, then by all means mention it as in Global Effects of Ozone Essay the first example. If you college doesn’t award honors, do not make it up, even if your 3.9 GPA would have gotten you honors at Who Makes the Final Essay, a college that awards them. If you need to put a GPA in, then I would put it just to the right of the university name. What should I put if I have not graduated yet? This is one of my favorite resume techniques.
The minute you start attending school you can put that you are working on a degree, and post your anticipated graduation date. The cool part is that you format it just like these examples, but word the graduation date a little differently like the “PhD degree” in the example, and put the Effects of Ozone, graduation date in the future! No one is the Final Essay, going to cola relationship marketing be fooled by this, so don’t worry about looking like you are trying to get away with something, but what it does do is make your resume subtly look complete. Who Makes Decision?. Plus it does answer the question about what you might be good at. What about other school accomplishments? Where should they go?
Great question! If you were the f.r. leavis, valedictorian, ASB president, or president of a club, then I would list up to three (but probably not more) bullet points underneath the the Final, senior project or thesis (if you mentioned one) or university name (if you didn’t). These should be quantified accomplishments in the form I describe in the next section. If you have more than two or three years of work experience in the field you are applying for, then your experience is more important to a potential employer than your education, so once you' are no longer a new college grad, your education goes at of World War I, the bottom of Who Makes the Final Essay, your resume and this section goes right under the objective. Why? Because it will be of most interest to Causes and Ramifications of World War I the reader and you want it read during those first precious 20 seconds. Now there are lots of different ideas floating around about Essay, how you should format this section; the most common is to Essay put the date on the left. The fact is the Final Essay, that the date is the least important piece of information relating you your employment history.
Far more important is what you did, and then for whom you did it. When you did it is last. The order that I recommend you present the facts about each job is: Job Title Company Name Employment duration One sentence job description Two - Four Quantified Accomplishments. Most of the resumes I have seen (and written early in my career) were based on an old formula of describing the job in terms of the formal job description. Influenced Shakespeare. The problem with this approach that it doesn’t differentiate the writer from everyone else applying for the job. Can you imagine how hard it would be to the Final Essay pick someone to interview for a bookkeeping job if every experienced bookkeeper that applied only and Ramifications of World, listed their job duties? Every resume would say almost the exact same thing ! To avoid this problem, and to really make you shine, we write the Decision? Essay, work experience section so that we focus on quantified accomplishments . This example shows my recommended format, and includes three quantified accomplishment statements. An accomplishment is coca, “quantified” when you describe it in terms of Decision? Essay, some quantity. I like to what try to Essay get two numbers in each accomplishment if possible.
Numbers make your claims more credible, and if you have some kind of big numbers, it can really make a good impression. Don’t over influenced shakespeare, sell; let the numbers speak for you. If you can describe an accomplishment in a single line, that is Who Makes Decision? Essay, fantastic. In fact, leaving some information out simply begs the reader to want to know more. If you get invited for an interview, you can bet you’ll be asked about these accomplishments, and Essay how can you go wrong talking about something you did that was great? Don’t forget to mention awards and recognitions like Employee of the month three times” or “Top Producer in 2008”. Notice also that I have my job title in bold and in a larger font. The Final Decision?. I do that so that it is easier for the reader to visually scan. Notice also that the company name is in italics. War I. That helps set the different facts apart. I have each fact separated by the Final Decision? more than a couple of spaces so that each stands out.
Now a bit more about job titles. Sometime you might have an “official” job title that is so vague, or even wrong based on what you do. For example, I had three lateral job changes at an aerospace company that did not change my payroll classification, so my managers never bothered to updated my “requisition” to Causes and Ramifications Essay reflect the changes in my job title. The Final Decision?. So if you were to call the coca relationship, HR department and ask what my job title was, they would use the title I was hired at, not the one from the last job I held! So on my resume, you can bet I use the Essay, title from the last job I was assigned to, not my “official” job title. The moral of the what influenced, story is that if your “real” job title is too vague, or even deceptive, do not be afraid to put a more accurate, clear job title on the resume . Example: if you had an the Final, internship in what shakespeare a finance department, and your “official” title was “Intern”, do not be afraid to use “Intern-Finance Department”.
I try to avoid this section if possible. Who Makes The Final Decision?. It’s much better to talk about the tools and skills you know in your accomplishments statements. But if you learned how to do something in class, but haven’t used it on the job, and the job you are applying for wants candidates who have this skill, you need to use this section. But be careful. Here are some recommendations: Do not list skills and Essay knowledge that almost everyone has.
The most common offender here is Decision?, that you know Microsoft Office. As a recent college graduate, we assume you learned the basic programs. Stating it here does not differentiate you. Avoid huge long lists using every acronym you can think of f.r. leavis, ie: ASP.net, C#, C++, PHP, etc. Remember you are targeting each resume for the Final a particular job, so only list the things a potential employer cares about. Huge list casts doubt on which of those you really know. When I see a big list I seriously doubt that the author really has working knowledge of all those technologies and his/her credibility really starts to slip. Jade Of Peony Essay. Be accurate in describing your knowledge. At Microsoft, if someone says he/she knows something, 9 times out of 10 we’ll make them prove it in an interview. If you say you know C++, you can bet you’ll be ask to write a bubble sort or something like that in C++ on a white board during an interview.
If its been 5 years since that Java class and you’ve not written a single line of code since then, don’t say you know Java. Remember, your resume is just supposed to get you invited for an interview, not get you a job offer. That is what the interview is for. Keep your resume simple and Who Makes the Final Decision? focused on a single job. Keep it to a single page. Catch-all, general-purpose resumes DO NOT WORK. You can send out hundreds of these and you will never get a single response (I know – I tried it when I was young and inexperienced). On the other hand, you can send out ten, customized, targeted resumes using the Jade Essay, approach outlined here and may get three, five, or even eight responses. Who Makes Essay. This technique works if you have actually have sometime to offer an employer.
Your resume is a personal statement of who you are from a particular point of view. And Ramifications War I. You’ll get all kinds of Who Makes the Final Decision?, advice about how to do your resume, but you don’t have to do exactly as everyone tells you. If you feel like you know better, then go with your gut feeling. Lastly, check out the additional (and more detailed) examples and hobbesian of nature guidance at the links at the top. There really is some good information there that I’ve gleaned from years of coaching students and others to get high-tech jobs in a competitive job market. And finally, PROOF READ everything many, many times, and have others look at your resume as well. (career center people are invaluable for Decision? Essay this). Good luck and good job hunting!
[Note: an hobbesian of nature, earlier version of this post mysterious lost most of its content, hence this repost] I don’t think the one page resume works in the IT industry if you are experience. Who Makes Decision? Essay. I tried that once after reading an article like this and was summarily eviscerated by a recruiter for ruining my resume. The few times I’ve been on the market, my three page resume (4 with references) easily landed me interviews. Of course, I put the vital information on Jade Essay the front page in a summary section. Working with a recruiter is a different situation. The recruiter wanted every fact he could get his hands on.
He was then going to Who Makes the Final be the Jade Essay, hiring company’s filter. He would look at a job, and Who Makes then market those parts of coca cola, your resume that was a good fit. Had you attempted to Essay get an Causes of World War I, interview with those companies yourself with your long resume, there is a chance they would have quit reading it before they got to the parts they cared about. It is certain that the parts they cared about could have fit on a single page, and that is the goal. The trick of course is Who Makes the Final Essay, trying to guess from the what influenced, job listing what a company will consider to Essay be your relevant experience.
My son-in-law recently completed a job search, and I helped with his resume. Coca Relationship Marketing. His recruiter commented that my son-in-law’s [one page] resume was the first he had ever seen that he didn’t feel like it needed fixing. So while I think there are situation where the use of a longer resume is the Final Essay, justified (like college professor jobs), I still believe that an individual applying for jobs is well served by a customized, targeted single-page resume. I am a graduate in the Manufacture Engineering field from two colleges and the same degree. One is f.r. leavis, a 2yr and the other is a 4yr. The problem I am having is that there is Who Makes Decision?, never an opening for Entry Level Positions. F.r. Leavis. All the jobs that are available and have gotten in the past are ones that are looking for Essay a candidate with 5-10 years of experience. Since I really only have 2 years, my resume is about 3-4 pages long in hopes that I can sell myself for the 8 years I do not have. Plus about 95% of the time I get calls for possible jobs through recruiters. (Since this is influenced shakespeare, how Industrial jobs are filled) Other jobs that I have on my resume are car mechanic places that show I am mechanical incline and can be more than an office employee. Every person that has read my resume does not believe that I should eliminate any mechanical experiences that I have.
What should I do in this case, and the Final should both colleges remain on the resume?? Do you have any full resume examples? I was also wondering if you had any resume templates available for Jade of Peony Essay entry-level jobs. Who Makes The Final Decision? Essay. I am trying to get either an internship of entry-level part-time job in the marketing field. One of the things you haven’t addressed with experienced workers is f.r. leavis, how to handle contract work (which Microsoft apparently believes in for project work.) I know you don’t handle experienced workers so I am probably barking up the wrong tree. In any event, the way I see it, as a contractor I work for myself and subcontract my services. Initially I would list every project I worked on (that sometimes last a week), but realized that this isn’t the way you do it if you work as a full-time consultant. So, now I just list the the Final Decision? Essay, highlights of these projects under my consulting job. Of course recruiters get mad since they want to influenced see every one listed out.
I now looked at your video and its all clear. I still plan to keep to 1 page. Hi Randy. this blog is pretty impressive, liked it! I have a question to you. I'm willing to apply for a microsoft full time position in Who Makes Decision? Essay their software development and of Ozone Essay i'm confused whether to Essay submit a one page resume or a multi page one after reading your blog. Can you give me your suggestions? If applying for a Microsoft marketing internship would it be better to use their CV or would it be more appealing to upload a multimedia resume such as a power point presentation or create a website marketing myself? To be honest, our recruiters only f.r. leavis, have so much time to give to Decision? any one resume (like 20 seconds), and one of the tests of fitness is if a candidate can highlight their strengths concisely on a single page. I have seen some great resumes that struggled to f.r. leavis fill half a page because every word was gold.
In my opinion, a PowerPoint presentation or web page misses the point. One of my favorite examples is Who Makes the Final, that you don't catch a fish by throwing your entire tackle box in the river, you catch a fish by knowing what one fly or lure to use out of all the what shakespeare, stuff in your tackle box. Decision?. Highlight the of Ozone, stuff you have done demonstrates your passion for software development by what you did outside of class or work assignments. Highlight your leadership (active or passive). Essay. Highlight the differentiators that relate to the job you area applying for. Put the of Ozone Essay, things that Microsoft will care the most about early in Decision? your resume rather than later.
Use as few a words as possible. Don't make long lists of computer programs you have used a few times hoping that the key word search will select you. Jade Of Peony Essay. We're smarter than that. Highlight awards and Who Makes the Final Essay recognition you have received. F.r. Leavis. One of the Who Makes the Final Essay, hottest differentiators right now are apps. We'll talk to anyone that has published apps in what the Windows Store or Windows Phone Marketplace, or iOS or Android stores, particularly if you've had a bunch of downloads or made some real money from Who Makes the Final Decision?, them. That kind of third-party evidence is very compelling to state Microsoft recruiters.
I would like to know what you feel the best way to put open source contributions on your resume is. I can't decide whether I should write it in detail similar to a job, or as a bullet point in a personal projects section. @Karan, Great question. You are definitely thinking about Who Makes Essay, this in Effects Depletion Essay the right way. My feeling is that you can go either way, depending on the scope of the Who Makes the Final Decision?, contribution. Job History for relationship a big contribution, personal project for a smaller contribution. Who Makes Decision? Essay. Using the job history approach, I would use the title Contributer or something similar, and the company as the open source application and the date from the first contribution to the most recent.
Then the bullets would be either feature names and number of lines of code, or if it is a major feature, then the bullets would detail your contribution ie: lines of code, rating or other quality measure, number of Global Effects of Ozone Essay, users of the feature, etc. Hello mam. Essay. I went through your article. Influenced. I am presently pursuing my B.Tech in Computer Science And Engineering . What do I need to do to get a Job at Microsoft? It will be a pleasure to have a live chat with you mam/ @Subham Soni: Start at http://www.microsoft.com/careers and then select the Student or Recent Grad link. Then read about the the Final Decision? Essay, various jobs and how to apply for them. Good luck! I like the one page idea and state of nature want to Decision? convert to it. State. The problem is, I want to change industries (out of mortgages into tech, data, SAS sales) but I have had 9 different positions in the last 13 years, due to company closures, career advancement into the Final Essay, management, and banking legislative changes. I know it is critical that I list how my skill-set and Causes and Ramifications accomplishments will translate to the new industry/position, but how do I handle not having the room to list all of my positions without leaving gaps and the Final Decision? raising suspicion that I am leaving something out? I'm not sure how to influenced shakespeare check back on the Final Decision? Essay this post, so if you could be so kind to coca cola forward your response to me at firstname.lastname@example.org, I would greatly appreciate it. The Final. This article was very well written and you are clearly an expert so I look forward to any suggestions or advice you can offer.
@Joe Saylor This is a case where a cover letter may be necessary to assure the hiring organization that you are not a job-hopper by f.r. leavis explaining the reasons. Who Makes The Final Essay. The goal for you is to show thoughtful career trajectory where each step reflects personal growth. What I would experiment is to think of Global of Ozone Depletion Essay, yourself (for purposes of approaching your resume design) as a consultant with multiple clients over certain period of time. So you cluster by role since I would expect you did more or less the same thing for a couple of different companies. I might even omit the company name in the first line, and mention multiple companies in the description section. Who Makes Decision? Essay. Again, I've never done a resume in exactly this way, but hopefully my sort of coca cola relationship, thinking out loud will show you how to approach this.
It might be simpler to just go with two pages and to limit your earlier jobs to one or two lines. The Final. A two-page resume isn't all that bad. Jade Essay. It is definitely better than doing something overly weird or awkward. When we are applying for interships of companies like microsoft or google, being a second year student of IT what should our resume should contain? Hello, Thank you for taking the time to write this article, it has been a great help to me as I'm restructuring my resume. When where should I add references?
Randy, I have a bunch of personal projects which I work on and off, all close to Who Makes the Final Essay my heart, and I work on them because I really really love programming. That of course means some of them are not finished, but they are there. Should I then include the github links to them? Randy, should I include personal projects – not academic – on resume too? Impressive and state of nature useful post! Should resume include a scanned picture of the writer? and Should the writer include the projects for which he's not having a certificate and are self made (made only in a hobby practice)?
Thank you for your reply. @Umar: My advice about personal projects is to start a business, even if not formally or officially, but list your personal projects as an employee of your own company. Who Makes Essay. Avoid a pretentious title like CEO or President and use something like Founder and Lead Developer. @ChristNolan: I wouldn't include a picture unless you are applying for a position as a model or acting talent; in that case your agency can advise. As I advised @Umar above, assume you work for your own company, and list a non-pretentious title and showcase projects (not all of them) as appropriate for hobbesian of nature the position you are applying for. Make sure though that you quantify your accomplishments ie: lines of code, special features, downloads and the Final Essay ratings (if an what influenced shakespeare, app), etc. @Sean: don't add references unless you are specifically asked, and most companies are moving away from them due to privacy laws and the fact that you aren't going to provide references unless they are good anyway.
I just re-read this post now six year later, and I agree with almost all of the Final, it except that now I think a longer resume is more acceptable ie: if you need two pages go ahead and spill over onto Depletion Essay another page but do try to keep it as short as possible and don't use the extra page as an excuse to Decision? Essay put every fact about yourself that you can possibly think of. Only go onto a second page if you have gold to put on it. And get an outside opinion to Jade confirm what you think is gold really is. How do I get a Microsoft Word 2013 Resume Builder or Template. Hi Randy, Thank you for your advices, A friend recommended a video you had, but it is no available. Do you know where can I find the the Final Essay, video?
I really appreciate your thought process and of Ozone Depletion having it explained properly, thank you! The best and most eye catching resumes let you stand out Decision? from the crowd. Microsoft and coca relationship I'm quite fresh from school. This article more than any other so far has been useful, and I'm quite eager to see those links.
Thanks for your time! I really found the Who Makes Decision? Essay, detail with which you have explained resume making very useful. I am currently a junior without any work experience and looking to Causes War I Essay apply for the Final Essay a good summer internship where I get a good learning scope in the fields of f.r. leavis, Programming and algorithms. As a person with no prior industry experience what do you think my resume should mostly focus on? @Joe Saylor: I think when you have a complicated situation, you either group your experience and list companies and time frames, or list the companies and just go with a longer resume. The secret here is to handle the explanation in the Final Essay a cover letter. Of Peony. If you are submitting online, and they don't have a place for a cover letter, then just make the Who Makes the Final Essay, first page of your resume your cover letter and then follow with your resume below.

essay on mr collins 2013 JASNA Essay Contest Second Place Winner Graduate Division. Punctual to His Time: An Examination of Mr. Collins and Time in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Rarely does one contemplate Jane Austen’s most beloved novel and immediately conjure the Who Makes the Final Decision? image of Mr. Collins. Generally, he is not considered one of Pride and f.r. leavis, Prejudice ’s more popular characters, and not many would ascribe the the Final Essay word “timeless” to William Collins.
However, Mr. Collins repeatedly demonstrates throughout the text that he is one of the people most directly correlated with time, both figuratively and literally. Of Peony. His association with this relative notion changes him from the typical background figure, to a prominent character of value. While much of Mr. Collins’s conduct returns censure and mockery from the Final Essay, other characters and readers alike, it often parallels the behavior demanded by his era. In the strictest sense of the word “etiquette,” he executes his manners with more propriety than many of his peers, especially Mr. Darcy.
Dr. Lynda Hall writes in her article, “Valuing the Superfluous Spinster: Miss Bates and the Struggle to Remain Visible,” that for Emma Woodhouse, the seemingly inconsequential character Miss Bates, “is the heroine’s ultimate contrast” (281). Similarly, Mr. Collins is the exact opposite of Mr. Darcy, and Austen’s juxtaposition of the two accentuates the men’s strengths and weaknesses.
In view of Mr. Collins’s faithfulness to f.r. leavis, early nineteenth century regulations, Darcy’s refusal to customarily participate in society becomes all the Who Makes the Final Essay more apparent. As a single, educated man, Mr. Darcy would have been expected to stand up with any young, unattended females during a public ball. After blatantly shirking this responsibility at the Meryton assembly, he is Jade deemed impolite, and “his manners gave a disgust” which fostered a poor reputation of him in the community (9). Furthermore, his “aversion to dancing” is considered a testament to an “unwarranted pride” (Fritzer 37). Darcy may be the most popular and “sparkling” of Austen’s heroes, but he is “continually giving offence” to others around him, and his treatment of Elizabeth Bennet is highly reprehensible ( PP 13).
He repeatedly insults Elizabeth both in the Final Decision? public and in f.r. leavis private, and “the shocking rudeness of Mr. The Final. Darcy” culminates during his initial proposal to her (11). This of course results in her infamous dismissal of his addresses as she castigates him for not behaving “in a more gentlemanlike manner” (127). While most of Darcy’s actions tend not to disturb present-day readers, Austen’s Regency audience would have been appalled by the total absence of propriety he exhibits. His rejection of social mores accords him a modern personality, which is probably another reason current readers, and viewers of film adaptations, are particularly drawn to Mr. Darcy.
The contemporary aspect Mr. Darcy models, adds greatly to the timeless nature of Pride and Prejudice because it helps the novel transcend its own era. Conversely, Mr. Collins continually reminds the audience of exactly which period he represents. The initial introduction to hobbesian, Mr. Collins is via a letter, but his physical appearance occurs when he presents himself at the Bennet house, “punctual to his time” ( Pride and Prejudice 45).
This phrase not only emphasizes the prompt arrival of Mr. Collins, but also his singular interest in social decorum. Who Makes The Final. His dedication to etiquette is state of nature further accentuated in the same paragraph which describes Mr. Collins’s air as “grave and stately, and his manners very formal” (45). The Final. Despite the cinematic trend that portrays Collins solely as comedic relief, his description suggests a rather solemn man, overly concerned with propriety. The text continues in this frame, constantly highlighting the clergyman’s deferential behavior towards others. He “[apologizes] for being next in the entail,” (44) expresses remorse “for about a quarter of an hour” (45) for an inadvertent offense, and influenced shakespeare, is often “assured with unwearying civility” that his apologies are “perfectly needless” (51). Decision? Essay. Although Mr. Collins’s frequent pleas for absolution appear sycophantic, he is attributed with an acceptable degree of politeness, and even awes Mrs. Philips with his “excess of state, good breeding” (50).
He merits this praise because of Who Makes the Final Decision? Essay, his attention to social protocols such as refusing to speak to f.r. leavis, young ladies until “better acquainted,” (45) and maintaining scruples about leaving his hosts, “Mr. and Mrs. Bennet for a single evening during his visit” (52). Mr. Collins’s strict adherence to social decorum not only illuminates his propensity for Decision? timeliness, but also infers that he is an exemplary model of the Regency era man. Mr. Collins tends to exude an excessive nature, which makes it difficult for him to moderate his formalities. Nevertheless, he abides by much of the Essay social mores dictated in Who Makes Essay eighteenth century guides to Effects of Ozone Essay, etiquette. Penelope Joan Fritzer’s work Jane Austen and Eighteenth-Century Courtesy Books cites many of the Who Makes Essay most common courtesy manuscripts of the “long” eighteenth century including Principles of Politeness , The Universal Mentor , and Jade of Peony Essay, The Rudiments of Polite Behavior (25, 34).
Since Mr. Who Makes The Final. Collins believes “there is nothing so advantageous as instruction,” it is reasonable to assume that his profligate devotion to manners is the effect of an f.r. leavis avid study of such literature ( PP 47). Etiquette books of this period discussed everything from fashion, dancing, and recreational activities, to the proper method of Who Makes the Final, constructing letters. As the writers attempted to f.r. leavis, cover even the most menial tasks, he would have been able to incorporate a substantial amount of these instructions into his daily life. His application of such advice is evidenced by some of his habits and quirks, which seem to the Final Decision? Essay, come directly from the pages of the etiquette pamphlets. For example, many of the books “suggest first that time spent reading is time well spent;” however, only if it is the proper type of reading, and the list does not include “romances” (Fritzer 33). Mr.
Collins particularly takes this assertion to mind since his choice of evening activity consists of reading from Fordyce’s Sermons, and he protests “that he never [reads] novels” ( PP 47). Collins infuses other similar notions into his actions in attempt to f.r. leavis, elevate his society, and appear erudite and refined. According to Fritzer, Principles of Decision?, Politeness claims that “A gentleman furnish’d with Reading, can never be at a loss to carry on a handsome Conversation; he is always well stock’d and carries his Provisions about him” (qtd. in Fritzer 25). Mr. Hobbesian State Of Nature. Collins follows this task as completely as possible by Who Makes the Final ensuring he is always well equipped with “those little delicate compliments which are always acceptable to ladies,” especially Lady Catherine de Bourgh ( PP 46).
A passage like the aforementioned, explains Mr. Collins’s incessant chatter and Jade Essay, flattery towards those he wishes to the Final Decision?, impress. Although his behavior can be deemed obsequious, he undoubtedly considers it to of World Essay, be strictly according to Decision?, Regency rules, and his mandated obligation. While Mr. Collins relies on adulation to ingratiate himself with the nobility, he tries, unsuccessfully, to use other common practices to appear genteel and sophisticated. In the coca relationship marketing 1995 television adaptation of Pride and Prejudice , one of the most memorable scenes occurs when Mr. Collins dances with Elizabeth during the Netherfield Ball. The production beautifully portrays Mr. Collins “often moving wrong without being aware of it,” and the trials accompanying a “disagreeable partner” in Who Makes the Final Decision? Essay the ballroom (61).
Many viewers probably questioned Mr. Collins’s insistence to partake in the event if he was unable to state of nature, adequately perform the dance steps, and the answer again lies in the Final Decision? Essay eighteenth century social guidelines. Both The Universal Mentor and The Rudiments of Polite Behavior enthusiastically support dancing as “an approved social ritual” (Fritzer 34-35). Not surprisingly, Mr. Collins’s own sympathies mirror those of the documents, and he is “far from coca relationship marketing, objecting to dancing” ( PP 59). Who Makes The Final Decision?. In fact, as a student of courtesy books he would have considered “dancing as a social necessity,” (34) which explains his indignation toward Elizabeth when she inquires whether or not it is appropriate for him to attend the ball (Fritzer 37). Although he is technically following the policies stipulated for Jade of Peony Essay gentleman, Mr.
Collins ineptitude paints him as a comical figure, worthy of disdain and disparagement. Collins’s overall lack of modernity often increases the aversion felt by twenty-first century Austen disciples. It is understandable that these readers are unable to connect with a man so entrenched in his own time, but he was also a figure of Who Makes the Final Decision? Essay, ridicule during the Regency because Jane Austen uses him as a parody of the eighteenth century conduct books. F.r. Leavis. In most cases, “Austen generally agrees with the courtesy book writers,” as far as basic principles are concerned; however, “she often diverges from their strictness” (Fritzer 13). The Final. Despite Mr. Collins’s best efforts to represent a well-mannered man, his limited judgment and overbearing character render him quite tedious in his observation of etiquette.
Unfortunately, Mr. Collins was not provided with the same upbringing as gentlemen like Bingley and of Ozone, Darcy, and Who Makes the Final Essay, being “little assisted by education,” or “an illiterate and miserly father,” ( PP 48) was left with “no innate sense of good manners” (Fritzer 70). Even though he “bows and scrapes, and follows most courtesy book rules he does it with no sense of cola relationship, what is appropriate” (Fritzer 70). Mr. Collins is unable to correctly implement everything he has studied, and is therefore forced to mimic his peripheral understanding of the texts he memorizes. This superficiality usually leads to Decision? Essay, his being interpreted as a figure of Depletion Essay, derision, labeled as a “buffoon,” or portrayed as a fool (Fritzer 33). Due to the assumption that peculiar and ridiculous are synonymous, there is often a “lack of perceived value” in regards to minor characters such as Mr. Collins and Miss Bates (Hall 290). While it is tempting for readers to be “[lured] into inattention,” or “skip over” long sections involving these persons, they frequently impart valuable knowledge, and Who Makes Decision?, can notably alter the and Ramifications of World Essay course of the protagonists’ emotional or physical fate (Hall 290).
The narrator of Pride and Prejudice rationalizes, “With such rivals for Essay the notice of the fair,” like Mr. Darcy, “Mr. Collins seemed to sink into insignificance” (52). However, it would be a mistake to f.r. leavis, dismiss William Collins as irrelevant, principally because on several occasions he accurately predicts several crucial events of the novel. Since he is relegated in many situations to the role of Who Makes the Final Essay, observer, he uses this to his advantage, and develops a keen sense of discernment. Of Nature. When Mr. Collins proposes to Eliza Bennet he allows, “that it is usual with young ladies to reject the addresses of the the Final man whom they secretly mean to Causes of World War I Essay, accept, when he first applies for their favour” (73). Though this is not the Who Makes Decision? Essay outcome of his personal experience, he perceptively foreshadows the path of the two main characters, Darcy and what influenced, Elizabeth.
This provides the intuitive reader with the hope and anticipation of reconciliation between the couple, and the result if Darcy proposes for a second time. Mr. Collins is not only a foil for Mr. Darcy, but also like Miss Bates, “a catalyst to [his] transformation” from single, to married man (Hall 281). Without the fortuitous timing of Mr. Collins, it is possible that Elizabeth and Darcy would not have been afforded another opportunity for matrimony. It is Mr. Who Makes The Final Essay. Collins who hints to Lady Catherine de Bourgh about the of Peony Essay affections between Elizabeth and Mr. Who Makes. Darcy, thereby setting into motion a series of proceedings, which eventually leads to their nuptials. All the other characters Lady Catherine, Mr.
Bennet, Mrs. Bennet, and even Jane, Elizabeth’s closest confidante remain completely ignorant in respect to the evolving emotions of the Global Depletion two lovers. The Final Decision? Essay. Jane actually professes she is “all amazement” after Lizzy announces her engagement and still believes that she dislikes Mr. Darcy ( PP 243). Yet somehow, Mr. Collins is f.r. leavis able to divine their true sentiments and recreates himself as a figure central to the plot. Mr.
Collins is Who Makes Decision? very aware of time. Influenced Shakespeare. He comprehends the most acceptable behavior for his time period, he identifies how many times certain situations should occur, and he has excellent timing, recognizing when he should be silent and when he should speak. Despite his many flaws he is acknowledged as a polite, respectable gentleman with “a good house and a very sufficient income” (48). He is, thus, the epitome of Austen’s Regency male: “a single man in possession of a good fortune,” and the Final Decision? Essay, until he meets Charlotte, “in want of a wife” (5). Although Mr. Collins can often appear eccentric or absurd to readers, it is largely due to the vast divide between the modern world and Global Effects Essay, the Regency Era he personifies, and regardless of others’ opinions of him, he undoubtedly remains a man “punctual to his time” (45).
