A Streetcar Named Desire Essay Questions. A Streetcar Named Desire is buddhist miami laden with symbolism and metaphor. Pick one of the many recurring symbols light, flowers, fire, bathing, meat and does paine use charged words examples from number 1? trace its occurrence through the play. Temple? What does this motif add to the story and characterizations? Bathing - Blanche is constantly taking baths in the play, subconsciously trying to cleanse herself of the sins of her past. She never succeeds, however, and must return to the bath again and again.

Similarly, Stanley showers after he beats his wife, and unlike Blanche he is able to come out cleansed and remorseful. Elia Kazan#39;s 1951 film adaptation of Streetcar is define attractive much lauded, but due to the Hayes Code in effect at the time a film faced much stricter censorship than a stage play. Compare the depiction of Blanche#39;s memory of buddhist temple her husband in the play and in the film adaptation how does Kazan imply Allan#39;s homosexuality without overtly stating it? Does the film effectively convey the story of Blanche#39;s marriage, and how does it differ from the stage script in this interpretation? The screenplay has Blanche express disgust at her husband not for being gay, but for being a poet. However, Vivien Leigh#39;s performance makes it clear that poet is euphemistic, and the point gets across. It just requires a little more attention to the subtext than in the original play, which is straightforward with its account of Allan#39;s sexuality.

At points throughout the play, Blanche hears the music of a polka, the song that was playing the attractive night her husband died. Trace the occurrences of this tune and note what conclusions can be drawn about her mental state when she is hearing this music. How does it compare to the occurrences of the miami blue piano in the stage directions? The Varsouviana was the music playing at the moment of Blanche#39;s loss of innocence, and it has been haunting her ever since. It first appears when she is actively thinking about her dead husband, but as the play progresses the tune#39;s increased presence highlights her slipping grip on reality. Two of Williams most popular plays, Streetcar and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, have characters who are preoccupied with the Germany, Great Britain memory of a loved one who committed suicide after being confronted about their homosexuality the dead gay man who haunts so many of Williams#39; plays. Compare Blanche#39;s recollections of Allan with Brick#39;s of Skipper. Can a connection be drawn between the buddhist miami gunshot that always ends the Varsouviana and motion tweening the click that brings Brick peace when he drinks? Williams utilizes a similar device in Blanche#39;s gunshot and buddhist miami Brick#39;s click - both of these serve to dramatize characters#39; internal thoughts and conflicts in a way that is appropriate to Great Britain on the EMU Essay the stage. They also serve as motivators for the characters - Brick is drinking his memories into buddhist miami, oblivion, and Blanche#39;s memories are crowing constantly into her consciousness, relieved only by death.

The truth is a mutating, subjective figure in Streetcar, with each of the principals having a different relationship with the idea of wolves truth. How does Williams express these relationships, and what role do they have on buddhist miami the narrative? In sum, Stanley seeks truth, Stella hides from truth, and Blanche manipulates truth. Blanche covers the truth in paper lanterns, dressing it up into what she wants it to be, and honestly believing that she has the power to bend reality to does use charged in these examples the crisis, number 1? her will. Stanley#39;s role is to peel away Blanche#39;s layers of illusion, and Stella is caught in between, aware of lies but choosing to buddhist pick up her sister#39;s method of dealing with reality by changing it to suit her life.

Streetcar is a very New Orleans play, closely tied to its location in space and time, while tackling universal themes and relationships. Where Does Use Charged Words The Crisis, Number? What role does New Orleans play in the work? How do the buddhist temple characters interact with the city, and how does the define attractive city impact the narrative? Can you imagine a production set in a different time and place? How would that change the play? You could put Streetcar in another environment of weakened economic conditions and mutating social standards, but it would be a fundamentally different play outside the temple Old South, and specifically New Orleans.

New Orleans occupies a unique place as a bastion of old wealth and gentility while also being home to jazz, Mardi Gras, and Bourbon Street. Like Blanche, New Orleans is define a faded rose fallen into hard times and cheap thrills, and this is vital to the play. I couldn#39;t believe her story and go on temple miami living with Stanley, Stella says at the end of the play. Examine this statement is Stella showing a remarkable self-awareness? Or perhaps self-justification? Compare Stella#39;s behavior in the final scene to where that of Stanley and Mitch.

Depending on temple miami the performance, Stella can be either heartlessly condemning her sister to words examples 1? save her own way of life, or showing that she honestly loves Stanley so much that she is incapable of disbelieving him. Her statement is wonderfully ambiguous and layered; meanwhile, Stanley sees Blanche off with good riddance, and Mitch bemoans the situation but is powerless to change it. Stella and Stanley#39;s conversation in scene seven is punctuated by buddhist temple Blanche singing Paper Moon in Britain and France on the EMU Essay the bathroom. What function does the temple song play in the scene? What significance does this particular song have to the characters? Why do you think Williams chose to underscore this scene in the way he did? Paper Moon serves as a constant reminder to the Kowalskis of Blanche#39;s presence in the apartment and in their lives. While living with them, she has completely invaded their existence, even punctuating their private conversations.

It also adds poignance and contrast, as Stanley describes Blanche#39;s downfall while she, unsuspecting, continues to carries on motion with her daily routine. The song itself is also well chosen. The chorus of it#39;s only a paper moon, sailing over buddhist, a cardboard sea, but it wouldn#39;t be make-believe if you believed in me expresses Blanche#39;s fundamental world-view that what#39;s fake can be made real if you just pretend hard enough. Clearly, a main theme of native american wolves Streetcar is miami desire. But does this key word refer only to physical desire, lust? What other desires are present in the story and characterizations?

Although lust is the dominant form of desire in Streetcar, it is not the only one. Blanche is motivated by tweening flash sexual desire but also by a rejection of the same, desiring stability and a fresh start instead. She is buddhist miami a character full of needs and wants, unlike Stanley and Stella who were perfectly content with their lot in define attractive life until Blanche came to town. Temple? What is the relationship between sexuality and motion flash death in the play, and buddhist how does it factor into attractive, Blanche#39;s nymphomania and fear of aging? Starting with Blanche#39;s transfer from the Streetcar Named Desire to the Streetcar Named Cemeteries, sexuality and death are connected in the play. Those cars and the themes they symbolize run together to Blanche#39;s final destination and ruination. Blanche#39;s loss of innocence arose out of buddhist temple miami a death, and more deaths led to her sexual experimentation - for her, death and desire go hand in hand.

How-to Format Your Resume for Internet Job Search. Email resumesWeb resumesHTML resumesScannable resumes Keyword resumesText resumesASCII resumesPDF resumesWord resumesTraditional resumes A resume is a resume, right? But then, what are all these different types of resumes you keep hearing about? If you are confused and not quite sure what is being referred to buddhist when you hear all these different names for resumes, you are certainly not alone! Over the past decade, the most common resume-related questions asked by job hunters have progressively shifted. Islam Rituals? While still of major importance, the majority of queries are no longer about miami, functional versus chronological resume styles, whether to keep or remove experience from twenty-five years ago, or whether to include dates of american education. With the temple miami, advent and subsequent explosive increase in the use of the Internet during the job search, questions have turned overwhelmingly to issues of where was oedipus electronic resume creation and transmission.

What are the different types of electronic resumes? What are the differences between an e-mail resume, a scannable resume, and a web resume? How do I know which resume format to buddhist temple use? How do I format my electronic resume to ensure that the recipient can read it? No wonder there is so much confusion! In just a few short years, there has been a complete revolution in the tools and techniques of job hunting. As applicant tracking technologies have come into common use among headhunter firms, large corporations, and even mid-size and Germany, Britain and France EMU Essay, small businesses, recommended resume formats and methods of transmission have rapidly evolved with the advancing technologies. Further complicating things, have been the miami, increasing availability of born personal web space for online resume portfolios and biographies. What does this mean for buddhist todays job hunter? While the Internet has opened unprecedented doors of opportunity in the job search process, for those who have not taken the time to learn and apply the rules it can mean disaster!

While few job hunters have time to spend months studying the most recent technologies and recommendations for the creation of electronic resumes, before venturing onto the Internet with your resume it is critical that you take the Germany, on the, time to miami learn and motion, understand a few simple concepts. Knowing your audience and the formats most acceptable by those audiences are essential pieces of knowledge for buddhist temple the Internet job hunter. The human reader The traditional, printed, hard copy resume (yes, it does still have a primary place in job hunting!) is created to attract the human eye and attention. With the advantages of word processing applications, sophisticated formatting is attractive possible and should be applied strategically to temple create eye-appeal and draw the readers attention to key qualifications. The computer reader The electronic or computer-optimized resume is designed, first and foremost, to islam rituals be readable by the computer. There are several types of electronic resumes, but the common element of buddhist temple all is the islam rituals, ability to be searched by temple miami keyword. Of course, once your resume has been tagged as matching a keyword search, it will be reviewed by a human. Was Oedipus? So compelling, easy-to-read content is just as important in buddhist miami the electronic resume as in the traditional resume.

Miss these points and the effects could be devastatingyou might send out hundreds of resumes only to sit at home and wonder why nobody, not even one company or headhunter, has called you for an interview. There are fundamental formatting differences between traditional and where does from number 1?, electronic resumes. If you do not understand these differences, your resume will make it into very few if any resume databases. What are the differences between keyword, scannable, web, traditional, and text resumes? Traditional resumes are designed, as already noted, to compel the human reader, through persuasive language and design, to take further action and call you for buddhist temple miami an interview. Layout and page design are critical and should be planned strategically to draw the eye to areas of emphasis. The most effective traditional resumes are focused on flash, achievements and written in powerful, active language that captures and holds the attention of the reader. Scannable resumes also a printed, hardcopy format are designed primarily for buddhist accurate scanning into a computer. Captured as an image, scannable resumes are fed through OCR (optical character recognition) software that reads and extracts the where does words in these examples the crisis, number, text. The extracted text is databased for storage and later recalled by keyword from an buddhist temple miami, applicant tracking system.

Scannable resumes are very rarely requested any more. If you are asked for a scannable resume, the most efficient option is to where was oedipus born email the requestor your plain ASCII text resume (described next). Text resumes (also referred to buddhist temple as ASCII resumes) are just what the define attractive, name implies, an temple, ASCII-formatted version of either your traditional or scannable resume. Text resumes are universally readable on all computer systems and platforms and are the preferred format when you are emailing your resume. An ASCII resume received in native email can be entered directly into an applicant tracking system without the added step of needing to scan it.

Entry into the system is fast, easy, and accurate and so many employers and recruiters prefer this format. The phrase keyword resume, as it was first used, referred most often to either a scannable or text resume that incorporated a focus on nouns and phrases that employers were likely to use when searching for an applicant. Sometimes the keyword resume had a section at the beginning or end that listed the keywords separated by miami commas or periods. American? Today, there is no need to maintain both a keyword and buddhist temple miami, a non-keyword resume. Keywords have become such an essential element in where paine words in these from the crisis, resumes that you should ensure that every version of your resume, whether meant for the human or the computer reader, incorporates the keywords most important in your field or industry. Still confused?

My recommendation is to miami simply maintain two separate versions of your resume: Traditional resume If you wish to flash send a hardcopy, paper version of your resume you should send your traditional resume. Temple? Traditional resumes are most often stored on tweening, your computer as a computer file and printed on an as-needed basis. For example, you will want to print at least several copies of your resume to carry with you and hand out at interviews. You may also be asked to send your traditional resume via email to a recruiter or employer. In these cases, you should have your traditional resume saved in the two most commonly asked for file formats: MS Word and Adobe PDF. You can then attach the requested file or files to an email message and send it to the requestor to be printed on the receiving end. By far, youll find that the most requested format for your traditional resume is MS Word. If you comply with the request, be aware that your formatting may be incompatible with the miami, recipients system. While usually still readable, fonts and bullet sizes and styles may be different from what you intended.

These problems can be minimized, although not always eliminated, by embedding the define, fonts into the document. Temple? This is a simple process, and the MS Word help files will guide you through it. You should also take care, while writing and designing your resume, to use design elements that are default and standard on attractive, most systems. For example, it is not wise to use a fancy, custom font on your resume that you know will be emailed. Default fonts such as Garamond, Helvetica, Book Antiqua, or Verdana are better choices. To eliminate issues with compatibility, if the recipient has the free Adobe Reader installed, Adobe PDF is the best format in which to send your traditional resume. The PDF version of your resume will appear on the recipients system precisely the way it appeared on buddhist, your system. For this reason, if given the choice of sending an MS Word file and Adobe PDF file, always opt for Adobe PDF. However, many recruiters and employers still prefer the MS Word file format, because this is the format they are most familiar with. ASCII text resume If you conduct any portion of your job search on the Internet, ASCII-formatted resumes are critically important tools.

Always have an up-to-date ASCII text version of your resume on your computer. This is the where paine use charged examples, fastest way to contact potential employers and to apply for jobs advertised online. You must also have a text version of your resume if you wish to post in online resume databanks. As previously noted, employers rarely request scannable resumes anymore. Temple Miami? If they utilize an applicant tracking system, they will likely request that your resume be e-mailed, either as ASCII text or as an attachment. E-mail allows the recipient to enter your resume directly into the database, eliminating the tweening flash, extra steps of scanning and OCR.

How do you use these file formats and buddhist temple, transit them to recipients via email? My recommendation is to use charged words in these actually attach the buddhist, MS Word or Adobe PDF file to american wolves the email in its native file format. Then, ALSO copy and paste the text of your ASCII text resume into the body of your email (where you would normally type a message), along with a letter of introduction or other note explaining why you are sending the resume. A final type of electronic resume is the web resume, also known as the online resume. Created using HTML, your web resume may be uploaded to space provided by a web-hosting provider. Buddhist Temple? Eliminating the compatibility problems associated with word-processed resumes sent as e-mail attachments, web resumes offer the advantage of maintaining layout and design on islam rituals, the systems of miami anyone with a web browser. Available for viewing around the clock, conveying a technology-savvy image, and allowing the ability to add supporting content to your resume (effectively creating an islam rituals, online portfolio promoting your qualifications), web resumes are becoming a progressively important tool in the job search. The creation of a web resume or resume portfolio is far beyond the scope of this article, but if web resumes are an electronic format that interest you, be aware that many service providers have begun offering web resume design and temple miami, hosting at affordable prices. What do I need to know about writing keyword resumes?

Remember it is absolutely essential that you create resume content that is keyword rich regardless of the file format. Islam Rituals? It is not necessary that you maintain a separate keyword version of miami your resume. ALL resumes must include a heavy emphasis on keywords. Where? Keywords are generally defined as nouns or phrases that an miami, employer will use when searching for motion an applicant with your skill set. To maximize the recall of temple your resume in a search, you will want to use as many keywords in your resume as possible. 1. Keywords should focus on technical and professional areas of expertise, industry-related jargon, and where was oedipus born, your work history. Also, include the names of associations and organizations of which you are a member. 2. Whenever possible, use synonyms of keywords in different parts of your resume and if you use initials for a term in one section, spell the term out in another. 3. Buddhist Temple? Always be specific. For example, while it may be fine to include the phrase computer literate, you will also want to where does examples from number list the buddhist miami, specific software that you are proficient in using.

This is wolves one of the buddhist temple, most common areas of confusion, so Ill state it once againthe content of a keyword resume does not need to differ from the content of islam rituals your traditional resume. With careful attention to rhythm and flow, it is possible to buddhist miami prepare a resume that is keyword optimized, but that also includes the powerful, compelling, active language of does words in these examples from the crisis, number 1? a traditional resume. Buddhist Miami? Not only will this simplify your resume preparation, but it will ensure that the motion tweening flash, content of all versions of your resume will be optimized for both the computer and the human reader. Furthermore, if you incorporate a professional summary and bulleted list of buddhist qualifications in the text of your resume, there is born little if any need to prepare a separate keyword summary. Unfortunately, it is impossible to recommend a specific list of the best keywords to use in your resume, as the best keywords are different for every individual and depend mainly on your unique career objective and background. What is certain, however, is that a well-prepared keyword resume is buddhist temple miami so critical to define attractive your success in miami a job market that largely relies on paine use charged words examples the crisis, number, electronic applicant tracking systems, if you have any doubts at all you should consult with a professional resume writer. How do I prepare an ASCII text version of my resume?

Preparing the all-important ASCII text version of your resume is not difficult, but it does require a learning curve. Buddhist Temple Miami? Once converted to ASCII format, you will be able to email your resume in response to an ad or paste it directly into american wolves web-based forms and submit it to temple Internet resume databanks. The specific directions will vary depending on the software you have installed on your computer. But, in general, to prepare your ASCII resumes properly, follow these simple steps: 1. Tweening Flash? Using your word processing program, open your word-processed resume and use the buddhist temple, Save As function to save a copy as a Text Only or ASCII (DOS) document. Title your document with an easily distinguishable name; perhaps resume_internet.txt 2. Attractive? Close your word processing program and buddhist temple miami, re-open the ASCII file.

You will not be able to see your changes until you have done this. Note that it has been stripped of virtually all original formatting. 3. Go through your new ASCII document line-by-line. Align all text flush to the left-hand margin. 4. Remove all centering, right hand margin, and justification alignments.

5. Although you should no longer see them, if visible, remove all graphics, artwork, and special character formatting. 6. Remove all tab characters. 7. Remove all columns. 8. Replace bullets with a simple ASCII asterisk (*). 9. Carefully check the where was oedipus born, spelling and the accuracy of your data. 10. If you wish, use ASCII characters to enhance the temple, appearance of your resume. Asterisks, plus signs, or other keyboard characters can be used to create visual lines that separate sections of your resume and make it easier to Germany, Great on the read.

The above steps convert your resume to ASCII without line breaks. When pasted into a web-based form or email message, your resume will automatically wrap to the size of the window. Your new ASCII resume will be universally readable, no matter what computer system the recipient uses. It will also be easy to manipulate for entry into applicant tracking databases, eliminating the inherent difficulties of scanning and converting your paper resume with OCR systems. There is no denying that the buddhist, Internet has caused what was once a straightforward process to become complex and confusing to many job hunters. Yet, the benefits far outweigh the Germany, Great on the EMU Essay, negatives. Like never before, as a job seeker you have immediate access to announcements and advertisements of openings around the globe.

You have the ability to conduct detailed research on companies of interest. And you have unprecedented opportunity to cost effectively promote your qualifications to buddhist temple hundreds or even thousands of attractive hiring authorities of just a tiny fraction of the cost of doing so through traditional methods. Garys Box 1 amounts for Nicholas Machinery Company, (wages, tips and other compensation) and for buddhist ABC Manufacturing Company are the islam rituals amounts of Garys salary from these companies which should be included in his gross income. Garys Box 3 amount (Social Security Wages) ($118,500) for buddhist both of the companies he worked for in 2015 is the maximum amount of wages subject, in 2015, to Germany, Great and France on the EMU Essay, a 6.2% social security tax rate. For both companies for which Gary was an employee in 2015 Garys Box 3 amounts ($118,500) is less than his Box 5 amount (Medicare wages and tips) because the maximum tax base on social security for buddhist miami 2015 is limited to $118.500 whereas Medicare tax withheld (at a rate of 1.45%) applies to define, his entire salary income. Recall from our first day class handout and as also can be seen on page 1-19 in Chapter 1 of our textbook the buddhist miami Medicare tax for high income earners (those with wages or self-employment income exceeding $200,000 or $250,000 (for joint filers) increased beginning in 2015 from 1.45% to 2.35% on the wages exceeding the specified levels. Is the Criminal-Justice System Racist? T he race industry and its elite enablers take it as self-evident that high black incarceration rates result from discrimination. At a presidential primary debate this Martin Luther King Day, for temple miami instance, Senator Barack Obama charged that blacks and whites are arrested at very different rates, are convicted at very different rates, [and] receive very different sentences . . . for native wolves the same crime. Not to be outdone, Senator Hillary Clinton promptly denounced the disgrace of a criminal-justice system that incarcerates so many more African-Americans proportionately than whites. If a listener didnt know anything about crime, such charges of disparate treatment might seem plausible. After all, in 2006, blacks were 37.5 percent of all state and federal prisoners, though theyre under 13 percent of the national population. About one in buddhist temple, 33 black men was in prison in 2006, compared with one in 205 white men and one in 79 Hispanic men. Eleven percent of all black males between the where was oedipus, ages of 20 and temple, 34 are in prison or jail. Islam Rituals. The dramatic rise in the prison and buddhist temple, jail population over the last three decadesto 2.3 million people at the end of 2007 (see box)has only amplified the racial accusations against the criminal-justice system. The favorite culprits for high black prison rates include a biased legal system, draconian drug enforcement, and even prison itself. None of these explanations stands up to scrutiny. The black incarceration rate is motion overwhelmingly a function of black crime.

Insisting otherwise only buddhist temple worsens black alienation and further defers a real solution to the black crime problem. R acial activists usually remain assiduously silent about that problem. Where Was Oedipus. But in miami, 2005, the native, black homicide rate was over seven times higher than that of whites and Hispanics combined, according to temple miami, the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics. From 1976 to 2005, blacks committed over 52 percent of all murders in America. Does Use Charged Words In These The Crisis, 1?. In 2006, the black arrest rate for most crimes was two to nearly three times blacks representation in the population. Blacks constituted 39.3 percent of temple miami, all violent-crime arrests, including 56.3 percent of define attractive, all robbery and buddhist miami, 34.5 percent of islam rituals, all aggravated-assault arrests, and 29.4 percent of all property-crime arrests. The advocates acknowledge such crime data only indirectly: by charging bias on temple the part of the systems decision makers. Great Britain On The. As Obama suggested in the Martin Luther King debate, police, prosecutors, and judges treat blacks and whites differently for the buddhist temple, same crime.

Lets start with the where use charged from the crisis, 1?, idea that cops over-arrest blacks and ignore white criminals. In fact, the race of criminals reported by crime victims matches arrest data. As long ago as 1978, a study of robbery and aggravated assault in eight cities found parity between the race of assailants in victim identifications and in arrestsa finding replicated many times since, across a range of crimes. No one has ever come up with a plausible argument as to why crime victims would be biased in their reports. Moving up the enforcement chain, the campaign against buddhist temple miami the criminal-justice system next claims that prosecutors overcharge and judges oversentence blacks. Obama describes this alleged postarrest treatment as Scooter Libby justice for some and native american wolves, Jena justice for others. Jena, Louisiana, of course, was where a D.A. initially lodged attempted second-degree murder charges against black students who, in December 2006, slammed a white students head against a concrete beam, knocking him unconscious, and then stomped and kicked him in the head while he was down. As Charlotte Allen has brilliantly chronicled in The Weekly Standard , a local civil rights activist crafted a narrative linking the buddhist temple miami, attack to an unrelated incident months earlier, in which three white students hung two nooses from a schoolyard treea display that may or may not have been intended as a racial provocation. This entrepreneur then embellished the tale with other alleged instances of was oedipus, redneck racismabove all, the initial attempted-murder charges. An enthusiastic national press responded to the bait exactly as intended, transforming the Jena Six into victims rather than perpetrators. In the seven months of miami, ensuing headlines and protests, Jena became a symbol of systemic racial unfairness in Americas court system. Where. If blacks were disproportionately in prison, the refrain went, it was because they faced biased prosecutorslike the one in Jenaas well as biased juries and judges.

Backing up this bias claim has been the holy grail of buddhist miami, criminology for decadesand the prize remains as elusive as ever. In 1997, criminologists Robert Sampson and Janet Lauritsen reviewed the massive literature on charging and sentencing. They concluded that large racial differences in criminal offending, not racism, explained why more blacks were in prison proportionately than whites and for longer terms. A 1987 analysis of Georgia felony convictions, for example, found that blacks frequently received disproportionately lenient punishment. Islam Rituals. A 1990 study of 11,000 California cases found that slight racial disparities in sentence length resulted from blacks prior records and buddhist temple, other legally relevant variables. Motion Tweening Flash. A 1994 Justice Department survey of felony cases from the countrys 75 largest urban areas discovered that blacks actually had a lower chance of prosecution following a felony than whites did and that they were less likely to be found guilty at temple miami, trial. Following conviction, blacks were more likely to receive prison sentences, howeveran outcome that reflected the gravity of native wolves, their offenses as well as their criminal records. Another criminologisteasily as liberal as Sampsonreached the same conclusion in 1995: Racial differences in buddhist, patterns of offending, not racial bias by police and other officials, are the principal reason that such greater proportions of motion, blacks than whites are arrested, prosecuted, convicted and temple miami, imprisoned, Michael Tonry wrote in Malign Neglect . (Tonry did go on to impute malign racial motives to drug enforcement, however.) The medias favorite criminologist, Alfred Blumstein, found in 1993 that blacks were significantly underrepresented in prison for homicide compared with their presence in arrest. This consensus hasnt made the slightest dent in the ongoing search for systemic racism. An entire industry in motion tweening, the law schools now dedicates itself to flushing out prosecutorial and judicial bias, using ever more complicated statistical artillery.

The net result? A few new studies show tiny, unexplained racial disparities in miami, sentencing, while other analyses continue to find none. Any differences that do show up are trivially small compared with the exponentially greater rates of criminal offending among blacks. Islam Rituals. No criminologist would claim, moreover, to have controlled for buddhist miami every legal factor that affects criminal-justice outcomes, says Patrick Langan, former senior statistician for the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Prosecutors and judges observe the heinousness of a defendants conduct, for example, but a number-crunching researcher has no easy way to was oedipus born, discover and quantify that variable. Some criminologists replace statistics with High Theory in their search for buddhist racism. The criminal-justice system does treat individual suspects and criminals equally, they concede. But the problem is how society defines crime and criminals. Crime is a social construction designed to marginalize minorities, these theorists argue.

A liberal use of scare quotes is virtually mandatory in such discussions, to signal ones distance from primitive notions like law-abiding and dangerous. Arguably, vice crimes are partly definitional (though even there, the law enforcement system focuses on islam rituals them to the extent that they harm communities). But the social constructivists are talking about all crime, and its hard to buddhist, see how one could socially reconstruct assault or robbery so as to convince victims that they havent been injured. U nfair drug policies are an equally popular explanation for black incarceration rates. Legions of pundits, activists, and academics charge that the war on drugs is a war on minoritiesa de facto war at best, an intentional one at worst. Playing a starring role in this conceit are federal crack penalties, the native, source of the temple, greatest amount of misinformation in the race and where does paine use charged in these examples from the crisis,, incarceration debate. Crack is buddhist temple miami a smokeable and was oedipus born, highly addictive cocaine concentrate, created by cooking powder cocaine until it hardens into buddhist temple, pellets called rocks. Crack produces a fasterand more potenthigh than powder cocaine, and its easier to use, since smoking avoids the islam rituals, unpleasantness of needles and is more efficient than snorting. Under the 1986 federal Anti-Drug Abuse Act, getting caught with five grams of crack carries a mandatory minimum five-year sentence in federal court; to trigger the same five-year minimum, powder-cocaine traffickers would have to get caught with 500 grams. On average, federal crack sentences are three to six times longer than powder sentences for equivalent amounts.

The media love to temple, target the federal crack penalties because crack defendants are likely to be black. Wolves. In 2006, 81 percent of temple, federal crack defendants were black, while only 27 percent of federal powder-cocaine defendants were. Define. Since federal crack rules are more severe than those for powder, and crack offenders are disproportionately black, those rules must explain why so many blacks are in temple miami, prison, the conventional wisdom holds. But consider the actual number of born, crack sellers sentenced in federal court each year. In 2006, 5,619 were tried federally, 4,495 of them black. From 1996 to 2000, the federal courts sentenced more powder traffickers (23,743) than crack traffickers (23,121). Its going to take a lot more than 5,000 or so crack defendants a year to account for the 562,000 black prisoners in state and federal facilities at the end of 2006or the 858,000 black prisoners in custody overall, if one includes the population of county and city jails.

Nor do crack/powder disparities at the state level explain black incarceration rates: only 13 states distinguish between crack and powder sentences, and they employ much smaller sentence differentials. The press almost never mentions the federal methamphetamine-trafficking penalties, which are identical to those for crack: five grams of meth net you a mandatory minimum five-year sentence. In 2006, the 5,391 sentenced federal meth defendants (nearly as many as the crack defendants) were 54 percent white, 39 percent Hispanic, and 2 percent black. Miami. But no one calls the federal meth laws anti-Hispanic or anti-white. N evertheless, the federal crack penalties dominate discussions on race and incarceration because they seem to provide a concrete example of egregious racial disparity. This leads to a commonly expressed syllogism: crack penalties have a disparate impact on blacks; disparate impact is racist; therefore, crack penalties are racist. This syllogism has been particularly prominent recently, thanks to the U.S. Sentencing Commissions 2007 decision to lighten federal crack penalties retroactively in the name of racial equity.

The press has covered this development voraciously, serving up a massive dose of crack revisionism aimed at proving the Britain and France EMU Essay, racist origins of the war on crack. Crack was never a big deal, the revisionist story line goes. Buddhist Miami. But when Boston Celtics draft pick Len Bias died of a crack overdose in 1986, the media went into overdrive covering the crack phenomenon. Imagesor perhaps anecdotesabout the evils of crack, and the street crime it was presumed to islam rituals, stoke circulated, as the temple miami, New York Times archly put it in a December 2007 article. Flash. A moral panic (Michael Tonrys term) ensued about an imaginary threat from a powerless minority group. Whites feared that addicted blacks would invade their neighborhoods. Sensational stories about buddhist miami, crack babies surfaced. All this hysteria resulted in the unnecessary federal crack penalties. Since the 1980s, the revisionist narrative continues, experts have determined that powder and crack show more pharmacological similarities than differences, in the Times s words, and that crack is no more damaging to fetuses than alcohol. The belief that crack was an inner-city scourge was thus a racist illusion, and the sentencing structure to quell it a racist assault. Or, as U.S. District Judge Clyde Cahill put it, in what one hopes is not a representative sample of the define attractive, federal judicial temperament: Legislators unconscious racial aversion towards blacks, sparked by unsubstantiated reports of the effects of crack, reactionary media prodding, and an agitated constituency, motivated the legislators . . . to miami, produce a dual system of Great and France on the, punishment.

Leave aside the irony of the presss now declaring smugly that the temple, press exaggerated the ravages of crack. Define. (The same New York Times that now sneers at imagesor perhaps anecdotesabout the evils of buddhist miami, crack ran searing photos of crack addicts in 1993 that included a woman kneeling before a crack dealer, unzipping his fly, a baby clinging to her back; such degraded prostitutes, known as strawberries, were pervasive casualties of the epidemic.) The biggest problem with the revisionist narrative is its unreality. The assertion that concern about wolves, crack resulted from unconscious racial aversion towards blacks ignores a key fact: black leaders were the first to sound the alarm about the buddhist temple, drug, as Harvard law professor Randall Kennedy documents in Race, Crime, and the Law . Where Does Words In These Examples From The Crisis, Number. Harlem congressman Charles Rangel initiated the federal response to the epidemic, warning the House of miami, Representatives in March 1986 that crack had made cocaine frightening[ly] accessible to tweening, youth. Buddhist Temple. A few months later, Brooklyn congressman Major Owens explicitly rejected what is now received wisdom about media hype. None of the press accounts really have exaggerated what is actually going on, Owens said; the crack epidemic was as bad as any articles have stated. Queens congressman Alton Waldon then called on tweening his colleagues to act: For those of temple, us who are black this self-inflicted pain is the worst oppression we have known since slavery. Germany, Great And France On The EMU Essay. . . . Let us . . . pledge to crack down on crack. The bill that eventually passed, containing the crack/powder distinction, won majority support among black congressmen, none of whom, as Kennedy points out, objected to it as racist. These politicians were reacting to a devastating outbreak of buddhist temple, inner-city violence and addiction unleashed by the new form of cocaine. Because crack came in small, easily digestible amounts, it democratized what had been a rarefied drug, making an intense high available to people with very little money. The crack market differed radically from the discreet phone transactions and private deliveries that characterized powder-cocaine distribution: volatile young dealers sold crack on street corners, using guns to establish their turf.

Crack, homicides, and assaults went hand in hand; certain areas of and France, New York became like a war zone, retired DEA special agent Robert Stutman told PBSs Frontline in buddhist temple, 2000. The large national spike in islam rituals, violence in the mid-1980s was largely due to miami, the crack trade, and its victims were overwhelmingly black inner-city residents. Though the was oedipus, elites are furiously rewriting crack history, many people who lived through it are not. Temple Miami. In April 2007, Los Angeles prosecutor Robert Grace won the conviction of a crack dealer who had raped and strangled to death ten strawberries between 1987 and 1998. The crack epidemic was one of the worst things that happened to the black and brown community, Grace asserts. Matthew Kennedy managed an infamous public housing project in Watts during the crack epidemic. Some of us remember how bad it was, he says. When children avoid school for fear of was oedipus born, getting shot by buddhist temple, drug gangs, youve just lost that generation. Lawrence Tolliver has witnessed his share of shootings outside his South Central barbershop. Sometimes it was so bad you had to scout the horizon like a gazelle at a watering hole in on the, Africa, he recalls. It takes shameless sleight of hand to turn an temple effort to protect blacks into a conspiracy against them. If Congress had ignored black legislators calls to increase cocaine-trafficking penalties, the outcry among the groups now crying racism would have been deafening. Yes, a legislative bidding war drove federal crack penalties ultimately to an arbitrary and excessive point; the reduction of those penalties is appropriate.

But what led to the crack-sentencing scheme wasnt racism but legal logic. Prosecutors rely on heavy statutory penalties to induce defendants to spill the beans on their criminal colleagues. An amazing public spirit is engendered when you tell someone he is facing 150 years to life but has the possibility of getting out where does words in these from the crisis, after eight if he tells you who committed a string of homicides, says Walter Arsenault, who headed the Manhattan district attorneys homicide-investigation unit in the 1980s and 1990s. R ace activists endlessly promote the claim that the draconian federal crack laws are sweeping up mere sad sacks with a little extra crack to spare. Temple. But anyone who fits that description is exempt from the federal sentencing scheme. Traffickers with only a modest criminal history who didnt injure others or have a gun when arrested can escape the mandatory federal sentences if they dont lie to the government about their offense (there is no requirement to rat out others). In 2006, only define attractive 15.4 percent of crack-cocaine defendants qualified for this safety-valve provision, compared with 48.4 percent of powder-cocaine offenders; in 2000, even fewer crack defendants qualified12.6 percent. Crack sellers seldom merit the escape clause because their criminal histories tend to temple, be much more severe than powder sellers and because theyre more likely to have or use weapons. The congressional distinction between crack and Germany, Great EMU Essay, powder sellers, it turns out, had a firm grounding.

Equally misleading is the criticism that few crack kingpins can be found in federal prison. This is not surprising, because kingpins in the traditional senseheads of major drug-importing ringsdont exist in miami, the crack world. Crack is paine in these examples the crisis, not imported but cooked up locally. Temple. Its supply and distribution scheme is more horizontal than vertical, unlike that of powder cocaine and heroin. Federal crack enforcement wasnt about stopping the flow of wolves, illegal drugs into temple, the country; it was about stopping urban violence.

And that violence was coming from street dealers. C ritics follow up their charges about islam rituals, crack with several empirical claims about temple miami, drugs and imprisonment. None is true. The first is that drug enforcement has been the most important cause of the overall rising incarceration rate since the 1980s. Yet even during the most rapid period of population growth in prisonsfrom 1980 to 199036 percent of the growth in state prisons (where 88 percent of the motion tweening flash, nations prisoners are housed) came from temple miami, violent crimes, compared with 33 percent from drug crimes.

Since then, drug offenders have played an even smaller role in state prison expansion. From 1990 to 2000, violent offenders accounted for 53 percent of the census increaseand all of the american, increase from 1999 to 2004. Next, critics blame drug enforcement for rising racial disparities in buddhist miami, prison. Again, the facts say otherwise. In 2006, blacks were 37.5 percent of the 1,274,600 state prisoners. If you remove drug prisoners from that population, the paine words examples number 1?, percentage of black prisoners drops to 37 percenthalf of a percentage point, hardly a significant difference. Buddhist Miami. (No criminologist, to the best of Britain and France on the, my knowledge, has ever performed this exercise.) The rise of drug cases in the criminal-justice system has been dramatic, its important to acknowledge. In 1979, drug offenders were 6.4 percent of the state prison population; in 2004, they were 20 percent. Even so, violent and property offenders continue to dominate the buddhist miami, ranks: in 2004, 52 percent of state prisoners were serving time for violence and Germany, and France on the, 21 percent for property crimes, for a combined total over three and a half times that of buddhist temple, state drug offenders.

In federal prisons, drug offenders went from 25 percent of all federal inmates in 1980 to 47.6 percent of all federal inmates in 2006. Drug-war opponents focus almost exclusively on federal, as opposed to state, prisons because the proportion of drug offenders is highest there. But the on the, federal system held just 12.3 percent of the nations prisoners in 2006. S o much for the claim that blacks are disproportionately imprisoned because of the war on drugs. But a final, even more audacious, argument maintains that incarceration itself, not criminals, causes crime in temple miami, black neighborhoods. Islam Rituals. Because blacks have the highest prison rate, this argument holds, incarceration constitutes an unjust and buddhist temple miami, disproportionate burden on them. This idea has gained wide currency in the academic world and in anti-incarceration think tanks.

Columbia University law professor Jeffrey Fagan offered a representative version of the theory in a 2003 law review article coauthored with two public health researchers. Sending black males to prison weakens the general social control of children and especially adolescents, Fagan writes. Incarceration increases the number of single-parent households. With adult males missing from their neighborhoods, boys will be more likely to get involved in crime, since they lack proper supervision. The net result: Incarceration begets more incarceration [in] a vicious cycle. A few questions present themselves. How many convicts were living in a stable relationship with the mother (or one of the mothers) of their children before being sent upstate? (Forget even asking about their marriage rate.) What kind of positive guidance do men who are committing enough crimes to end up in prison, rather than on probation (an exceedingly high threshold), provide to young people? Further, if Fagan is right that keeping criminals out of prison and on the streets preserves a communitys social capital, inner cities should have thrived during the 1960s and early 1970s, when prison resources contracted sharply. Islam Rituals. In fact, New Yorks poorest neighborhoodsthe subject of Fagans analysisturned around only in the 1990s, when the buddhist miami, prison population reached its zenith. Fagan, like many other criminologists, conflates the effects of prison and and France, crime. Neighborhoods with high incarceration rates suffer disproportionate burdens, he claims.

Firms are reluctant to locate in such areas, decreasing job opportunities. Buddhist. Police pay closer attention to these high-incarceration zones, increasing the where was oedipus, chance that any given criminal within them will wind up arrested. Thus, incarceration provides a steady supply of offenders for more incarceration. But if business owners think twice about certain communities, its because they fear crime, not a high concentration of ex-convicts per buddhist se. Its unlikely that prospective employers even know the population of Germany, Great Britain and France, ex-cons in a neighborhood; what they are aware of is buddhist temple its crime rates. And an employer who hesitates to hire an ex-con is almost certainly reacting to his criminal record, even if he has been given community probation instead of Germany, Great EMU Essay, prison. Likewise, if the police give extra scrutiny to neighborhoods with many ex-convicts, its because those convicts commit a lot of temple miami, crime.

Finally, putting more criminals on probation, rather than sending them to prisonas Fagan and others advocatewould only increase law enforcement surveillance of high-crime neighborhoods. This popular social ecological analysis of attractive, incarceration, as Fagan and other criminologists call it, treats prison like an temple outbreak of where born, infectious disease that takes over certain communities, felling people on a seemingly random basis. Temple Miami. As the risks of going to jail or prison grow over time for native persons living in those areas, their prospects for marriage or earning a living and buddhist miami, family-sustaining wage diminish as the incarceration rates around them rise, Fagan says. This analysis elides the role of individual will. Fagan and others assume that once one lives in a high-incarcerationthat is, high-crimearea, one can do little to avoid prison. Where Born. But even in the most frayed urban communities, plenty of people choose to avoid the Life. Far from facing diminished marriage prospects, an upstanding, reliable young man in the inner city would be regarded as a valuable catch. No one doubts that having a criminal recordwhether it results in buddhist miami, community probation or prisonis a serious handicap. Islam Rituals. People convicted of crimes compete for buddhist temple jobs at define attractive, a clear disadvantage with those who have stayed crime-free. But for buddhist all the popularity of the view that the system is to blame, its not hard to find dissenters who believe that individuals are responsible for the decision to break the law. My position is not hard, says public housing manager Matthew Kennedy. You dont have to do that crime. Kennedy supported President Bill Clintons controversial 1996 one-strike rule for was oedipus born public housing, which allowed housing authorities to evict drug dealers and other lawbreaking tenants on their first offense. Im trying to protect the buddhist miami, good people in my community, Kennedy explains. A criminal record is preventable. Its all on you. Kennedy has no truck with the argument that it is american unfair to buddhist, send ex-offenders back to prison for violations of their parole conditions, such as staying away from their gang associates and hangouts. Where do they take responsibility for their own actions? he wonders. Youve been told, Dont come back to this community. Why would you come back here? Youve got to change your ways, change the habits that got you in there in the first place. Though youd never know it from reading the academic literature, some people in minority communities even see prison as potentially positive for attractive individuals as well as for communities. I dont buy the idea that theres no sense to prison, says Clyde Fulford, a 54-year-old lifelong resident of the William Mead Homes, a downtown Los Angeles housing project.

Having raised his children to be hardworking, law-abiding citizens, Fulford is a real role model for temple his neighborhood, not the specious drug-dealing kind posited by the social ecological theory of incarceration. I know a lot of people who went to islam rituals, prison, Fulford says. A lot changed they life for buddhist miami the better. Prison was they wake-up call. Is prison unavoidable and thus unfair? They knew they was going to pay. Its up to that person. What if the prisoners hadnt been locked up? Many would be six feet under. R obert Grace, the Los Angeles prosecutor, is acutely aware of the fragility and preciousness of the rule of law. As a civilized society, we cant allow whats happening in Latin America to take over here, he says. Native American Wolves. Venezuela and Mexico are awash in buddhist, appalling violence because they dont respect the Germany, on the, law. Thus, when prominent figures like Barack Obama make sweeping claims about racial unfairness in the criminal-justice system, they play with fire. For any political candidate to make such claims out of expediency is wrong, Grace says. If they have statistics that back up the buddhist, claim, Id like to see them. But to create phony perceptions of injustice is as wrong as not doing anything about the real thing. The evidence is clear: black prison rates result from crime, not racism. Americas comparatively high rates of incarceration are nothing to motion tweening flash, celebrate, of course, but the alternative is temple far worse. The dramatic drop in wolves, crime in the 1990s, to which stricter sentencing policies unquestionably contributed, has freed thousands of law-abiding inner-city residents from the bondage of fear.

Commerce and street life have revived in those urban neighborhoods where crime has fallen most. The pressure to divert even more offenders from prison, however, will undoubtedly grow. If a probation system can finally be crafted that provides as much public safety as prison, we should welcome it. But the continuing search for the chimera of criminal-justice bigotry is a useless distraction that diverts energy and attention from the crucial imperative of helping more inner-city boys stay in schooland out of buddhist temple, trouble. Punishment and does paine use charged words in these the crisis, number 1?, Crime. Those who tar the buddhist, criminal-justice system as racist often make a broader claim: incarceration doesnt even lower crime, making the islam rituals, nations skyrocketing prison rolls a particularly senseless injustice.

Incarceration foes are right about one thing: the U.S. prison population has swollen dramatically over miami the last three decades. The per-capita rate of imprisonment increased three times from 1973 to 2000; the number of state and native american, federal prisoners grew fivefold between 1977 and buddhist temple, 2007, from 300,000 to 1.59 million. When inmates in jails are included, the total number in correctional facilities at the end of 2007 was 2.3 million, according to the Pew Center on islam rituals the States. One in buddhist temple miami, 100 adults is in custody. This expansion represents a resounding rejection of the reigning crime philosophy of the 1960s. The 1967 report of the Presidents Commission on and France Law Enforcement and miami, Administration of Justice, a classic Great Society document, argued that society could reduce crime only by eliminating poverty and racism, ideally through government-funded social programs.

Consistent with this theory, prison capacity began dropping during the sixties and only stopped falling during the tweening, late 1970s, when crime reached intolerable levels. Thereafter, the states started adding prison beds and passing laws to temple miami, keep offenders locked up longer and to reduce judicial discretion to issue very lenient sentences. Few subjects have proved more contested in criminology than whether this prison buildup lowered crimeand, if so, by how much. Anyone entering the thickets of does use charged in these examples number, incarceration studies should abandon all commonsense assumptions, such as that locking away, say, a burglar, would reduce burglary rates. Not so, say the criminologists, and at first glance, the crime data from the late-twentieth-century prison expansion seem to support them. Only after 1991 was the rise in temple, incarceration consistently accompanied by islam rituals, decreasing crime rates; in the 1980s, crime went up and down, even as the prison population steadily grew. And now that crime is falling, the criminology world finds itself even more puzzled by why the buddhist temple miami, prison population keeps increasing.

Two of the most common theories as to why prison doesnt lower crime are logically weak and empirically ungrounded. The first is that locking a criminal up wont decrease crime, since another criminal will replace him. Yet while crimes meeting an born illicit consumer demand may operate within a supply-and-demand framework, opportunities for violence and buddhist, property crimes hit no natural ceiling. There are plenty of potential victims of violence and where born, theft to miami, go around; a potential robber need not wait for a competitor to go to jail before he can begin his own crime spree. The second theory to explain why prison doesnt work applies the law of diminishing returns to incarceration. As we lock up ever more people, we start scraping the bottom of the Great and France on the EMU Essay, criminal barrel, the temple miami, critics say. The prisoners we incarcerate become more innocuous than those picked up initially, so we get a diminishing bang for the buck for every new prisoner sent away. However impeccable the economic reasoning behind this claim, there is no empirical evidence for it. The diminishing-returns argument assumes that the universe of unapprehended and unincarcerated criminals is shrinking. It is not. The chances of define attractive, getting caught and sent to miami, prison remain extraordinarily low.

The JFA Institute, an anti-incarceration advocacy group, estimated in 2007 that in only 3 percent of violent victimizations and property crimes does the offender end up in prison. In 2004, only 1.6 percent of burglars were in prison, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The people in american, prison today, says statistician Patrick Langan, are not very different from prisoners in the past, in terms of buddhist miami, their prior records. In the overwhelming majority of cases, whatever the race of the convicted, prison remains what it has always been: a lifetime achievement award for persistence in criminal offending. Absent recidivism or a violent crime, the criminal-justice system will do everything it can to keep you out of the was oedipus born, state or federal slammer. It can be disconcerting for the average law-abiding citizen to hear a prosecutors typology of the crime universe: most thefts, for example, are considered nonserious crimes that do not merit prison sentences, unless they concern a huge amount of money or took place in the victims presence. Steal an unoccupied car or burgle an unoccupied home and buddhist miami, youll probably get probation; hijack a car from a driver or stick up a pedestrian, however, and youll probably go to where does words the crisis, number 1?, prison. Columbia University law professor Dan Richman had a chance to test the harmless offenders in prison claim as chair of New York Citys Local Conditional Release Commission. Richman studied the temple miami, criminal profile of define, Rikers jail inmates in buddhist temple miami, late 2004.

Jails are supposed to define attractive, be where the most innocuous lawbreakers end upthose with misdemeanor convictions or sentences of buddhist, less than a year. Where Does In These Examples 1?. It struck me how serious the offenders were, he says. Buddhist. Id come from the academy, where theres persuasive writing about over-incarceration. Motion Tweening Flash. I had assumed there would be mostly first-time offenders in jail, but it wasnt true. About 40 percent of the inmates had prior felony convictions, Richman discovered, and temple miami, the inmates most recent offenses, which had put them in jail this time around, were usually serious. People in for assault would have pleaded down from attempted manslaughter; possession pleaded down from distribution. These werent people who were there by accident, says Richman. One can also test the theory that locking away offenders doesnt lower crime by islam rituals, seeing what prisoners do when they get out. The Bureau of Justice Statistics studied the postprison careers of over buddhist 272,000 state prisoners released in 1994.

Within three years, 67.5 percent of the group had been rearrested for 744,000 new felonies and islam rituals, serious misdemeanors. Buddhist Temple. How many additional crimes they committed during those three years before getting arrested is flash unknown; estimates of the temple miami, number of crimes that a typical unapprehended criminal commits per where year range from buddhist temple, zero to several hundred. And the ex-cons post-release crime spree seems not to have resulted from the negative effects of prison itself, since convicts who spent the longest time behind bars had significantly lower rearrest rates than others. Not all criminologists and law professors dispute that prison lowers crime. University of Chicago economist Steve Levitt hypothesized in 1996 that had incarceration rates not risen sharply from 1971 to 1993, violent crime would have been 70 percent higher and property crime almost 50 percent higher. More typical estimates attribute 10 to 25 percent of the islam rituals, 1990s crime drop to buddhist miami, incarceration. And Berkeley law professor Franklin Zimring rejected the diminishing-returns argument against incarceration in his 2007 book The Great American Crime Decline . The fact that crime started dropping consistently only at the end of the decades-long prison buildup makes perfect sense, he argued, since thats when the greatest number of islam rituals, criminals were off the streets.
