Death of a Salesman Ben Quotes Page 1 - Shmoop

bible article review Copyright 2000 by Pleasant Valley Publications. Over the past couple of months several people have approached me or my wife about a wonderful ministry that they’ve come across that has changed their lives. It is the ministry and teaching of Henry Wright. We were invited to read his book, to attend a bible study based on the book, and to go to the seminars when he came to town last week. One of the more common descriptions given was that he is so biblical in his teaching because he backs everything up with scripture. Ben! So, I read his book called A More Excellent Way . It certainly appears biblical, because he has a verse or two for every point he makes. I actually counted 186 verses quoted in the first 50 pages. But I didn’t find it to be at all biblical because of the way he uses scripture. What does Wright claim? He says that diseases are caused by specific sins in tom jones plot, one’s life. He claims that if a person repents of that sin, then we can pray for healing and the person will get well.

If there is no repentance, then there can be no healing. First: I want to make it clear that I DO think God heals today. I think that the Bible, properly interpreted, makes this plain and therefore a genuine Christian expectation. Death! There have been times—in my own experience—where God has answered fervent prayer and healed miraculously. Second: I DO think that sin, i.e. anger, bitterness, jealousy, fear, worry can cause sickness, that is, any number of tom jones plot diseases from ulcers to death of a salesman cancer. I think we should search our hearts and organization structure, see if there might be something spiritual/emotional behind a sickness. And if the cause of a sickness is sin, then dealing with the sin might be all that God was waiting for to heal the person. James 5:15 addresses this issue.

James says, “And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick and the Lord will raise him up—and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” Note, however, the “if.” Sickness is not always the result of sin, as in John 9. Of A! Third: I think Henry Wright may have, through his research and experiences, found some links between certain sicknesses and Journey Caulfield, certain sins. He certainly has a lot of experience and death of a, examples to prove his points. And some of gays free his information might be useful in identifying the spiritual source of a particular illness. I think that there is a movement across our whole society to link physical illness with the spiritual side of man. All you have to do is go past the checkout stand in the whole foods stores and read a few magazine headlines. Of A Salesman Ben! Recognize this, that throughout church history, a lot of doctrines have arisen that sound very much like the non profit structure secular ideology of the death salesman day. They are just re-packaged and presented with bible verses to make it palatable to Christians. 2 Pet 3:14-18 warns us about people who will come along and twist scripture to say whatever they want it to say. Peter says these people are unstable and unprincipled and gays free, will lead God’s people away from the truth. Our responsibility is to of a be like the believers of Berea who after hearing someone teach, went home to study the definition scriptures to see if what Paul said was consistent with the rest of scripture (Acts 17:11). If the ben Bereans felt it necessary to seriously weigh what the apostle Paul said—and indeed they were commended for doing just that—how much more should we seriously evaluate what others say today?

So, I want to tom jones plot examine some of the claims and scriptural proofs set forth by Henry Wright. If I seem disorganized and “all over the map” it’s because the book is that way. A topic will be introduced, the subject will suddenly change to something else, and salesman ben, then the original topic is speech returned to. Death Of A Ben! The book is really just the transcripts of several seminars. That would explain the non profit structure re-occurrence of the topics later in the book.

So, I’m just sort of taking stuff as it comes. Also worth mentioning is that Henry Wright’s style of speaking is to throw out many topics with brief statements and bible references and move on to a new topic. This method is very handy when what you are saying won’t bear scrutiny. Before the listener can really think about death of a ben, what’s been said, a new topic is introduced and you have to stop thinking about the previous topic or miss out on what’s being said. Women Nudity! When reading the book, one can stop, look up the death ben scriptures referenced and think about them in the biblical context. Henry Wright makes the claim (p. 22) that Deut 28 and non profit organization structure, Ex 15 are promises to us that the diseases which God put on Egypt won’t be put on of a salesman ben us today if we obey. That was a promise to non profit organization the nation of Israel before they went into the land. Following the secular custom of that time period, God used the Suzzerain/Vassal treaty formula (where a king made a contract with his subjects).

This would be very familiar to the Israelites. God told them the conditions for keeping the land: If they obeyed the commandments (the Law), He would bless them and they could stay in the land. If they disobeyed, he would curse them and remove them from the land. However, this is not a promise to believers of today. We are not Israel. We don’t live in the promised land. And we are not under the death of a salesman Law.

If you want to try to apply that passage to us, then you need to go back under the Law, observe the of hurrying Sabbath, etc. Compare Jer 31:31, 31:31 “Indeed, a time is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will make a new agreement with the people of Israel and Judah. 31:32 It will not be like the of a ben old agreement that I made with their ancestors when I took them by non profit organization, the hand and led them out of Egypt. For they violated that agreement, even though I was a faithful husband to them,” says the Lord. Salesman! Jeremiah makes it clear that Israel violated the gays free old covenant, and it is finished. We are now under a new covenant. Death! So, this is an invalid use of scripture to prove that disease is the result of disobedience or sin. Nor does it support Wright’s claim that if we obey God, we won’t get sick.

On p. 29, he says, “I’m not against doctors, but I believe, in Journey of Holden, our ignorance and our separation from God, that we’ve asked the salesman medical community to do something they are not qualified to do—that is to pastor us and deal with spiritual issues. I don’t find anywhere in Scripture, especially in Eph 4, where a doctor and a psychologist are considered to be a gift from the nudity Lord Jesus in leadership to us.” That is an argument from silence. A lot of death of a salesman ben professions aren’t mentioned in the bible, but that doesn’t mean they are bad. And it would seem to me that a Christian doctor would be excercising his gift of mercy in his care of policy speech people and using his knowledge, his years of death study and organization, experience to death salesman help people. A little later in gays free, the book (p. 70), he says, “Pastors, you don’t need more than Vines, Ungers, Strongs and of a ben, a Bible. Instead of getting 14 translations, why don’t you buy a Merck Manual, a pathophysiology manual, and an anatomy and physiology book and why don’t you do a little laymen’s study on disease?” In the next paragraph (p. 70) he says, that when reading his Merck Manual, he reads that Fibromyalgia is “particularly likely to occur in tom jones plot, healthy young women who tend to be stressed, tense, depressed, anxious, striving, and driven.” Two things stand out: This statement shows that he has a very shallow understanding of scripture and of a, is not at all concerned with the public historical or literary context, with theology, or with what scholars have learned over the past 2000 years. His study of the death of a salesman Bible seems to be limited to word studies and just finding verses or phrases out of context that might prove his point.

I’ll look at nudity some examples latter on. Second, who wrote the Merck Manual, the pathophysiolgy manual, the anatomy and physiolgy books? Doctors! If doctors are not from God and are incompetent to deal with disease, then why does he first condemn them and then turn around and buy the Merck Manual? And how in the world could they be identifying spiritual/emotional root causes for Fibromyalgia?

That is death salesman ben inconsistent with his point on page 29. So, on page 29, we see that doctors are incompetent. Then on page 70, we see that pastors are incompetent. Public! The implication is death clear that the only one who is competent is Henry Wright. On page 39 he starts off with the statement that “you do not have to resolve one issue with somebody that has victimized you in order for God to heal you, providing you have resolved that issue between you and God concerning them.” The obvious inference is that unforgiveness is the tom jones plot cause of sickness, and if you forgive them, God can heal you. Salesman Ben! I agree that unresolved bitterness or anger could very well be the source of illness. And sometimes you can’t find resolution with the person who wronged you. You just have to forgive them. Nudity! After making this statement about forgiveness, he takes us to 2 Tim 1:7 which says: 2 Tim 1:7 For God hath not given us the salesman spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of Holden Essay, of a sound mind. Why does he go there?

This verse doesn’t relate to his statement about death of a ben, forgiveness. It is about fear. It is about Timothy standing firm against the Gnostics who are trying to destroy his ministry. His explanation of 2 Tim 1:7 is that we can overcome fear by trusting the Godhead. He concludes this by interpreting the “spirit of persuasive policy speech topic power” as the Holy Ghost, “love” as the Father and death of a ben, “sound mind” as the Word. That reminds me of the allegorical writings of the early church fathers who when they read that “Jacob dug three wells” concluded that the three wells referred to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In other words, he’s pulling the Godhead thing out organization structure, of the air. In the midst of of a salesman ben his Godhead discussion (p. 40) and a later Godhead discussion (p. 61), he pulls in a little Hebrew to make his argument sound even more biblical. He says that in non profit organization structure, Deut 6:4 which says, “The Lord your God, the Lord is one,” the Hebrew word for “one” is echad which means plural unity.

Therefore, he says, “Right there in the Torah you find the Godhead.” That is a possible meaning of echad when it is in the plural., but it’s not plural in Deut 6, and death of a, it doesn’t mean plural unity there. Maybe he should add the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament to nudity his Vines and Ungers in his library. Of A Ben! Why would he even go to Deut 6 to prove the Godhead? There are plenty of other passages that would be better suited. My only conclusion is, if you can make a verse mean anything you want, then I guess you can use any verse you want. Of course, who would deny that we should trust the Godhead? If you argue with his point, it sounds like you don’t trust the Godhead.

But my point is that the Godhead is not in gays free, 2 Tim 1:7 and 2 Timothy has nothing to do with his point about of a salesman ben, forgiveness and conflict resolution. Immediately after the incoherent forgiveness/fear discussion he starts talking about communion and public, its relationship to death of a autoimmune disease. He is still on gays free the autoimmune disease topic, which started with the cause of all autoimmune disease being caused by lack of death of a forgiveness, bitterness, anger, etc. His understanding of the organization structure communion passage is abysmal. He prefaces his discussion with, “I may bump into death ben, some of your theology, but if I do, I sure do love you, and I hope you love me too!” So, maybe he knows he’s way off-base on this passage? He says, “In dealing with autoimmune disease, 1 Corinthians is an persuasive topic example of ben a block, not a root, but a block to healing.” (p. 41) Read the passage for your self and let’s start in verse 27 so you get the context.

1 Cor 11:27-31 says: 27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and of hurrying, drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of death of a that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and The Hero's Caulfield Essay, many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. Of A! He has totally missed the The Hero's Journey Caulfield Essay point of the passage which is that their flippant attitude about the of a salesman Lord’s Supper, their unconfessed sin, and their abuse (gluttony and of hurrying, drunkeness) of the Lord’s Supper IS IN FACT the root cause of their sickness and death.

Then there is a confusing discussion about Christ’s body paying the penalty for the curse and salesman, if we don’t appropriate that when we take the Lord’s Supper, then we are denying healing today and we will be filled with disease and go insane. Non Profit Structure! Here is the whole paragraph: If we come to a Communion service, and partake of the cup and the bread, but we deny healing and deliverance as part of the atonement today, we eliminate the death ben provision of God in our lives as a human being apart from salvation and eternal life in that day. For that reason, because we eliminate the broken body, but we celebrate it, and we don’t believe it, then we cannot partake. For that reason many of us are filled with disease and non profit, insanity today because we have said in our heart that it passed away two thousand years ago yet we still participate in the sacrament of Communion which represents its reality for death salesman today. If you don’t believe it, you don’t have to worry about it happening. But be careful, ignorance is a form of of hurrying knowledge and death of a, so is unbelief. (p. 42) To back up this confusing statement, he quotes 1 Peter 2:24 which says “by his stripes you are healed.” If you will go read 1 Peter 2, you will see that the context (2:13-17) is about submitting to authority.

And that it (2:18ff) is dealing with slaves submitting to their masters. In that paragraph Christ is given as an example of submitting, even when it is unjust. And the result is that through his submission (to the beatings and persuasive policy speech, the cross) we are healed (saved). Death Salesman! There is nothing in this passage about physical healing. Definition Of Hurrying! It’s about the healing of of a ben their/our souls. Policy Speech! It is about eternal salvation and our response to God as saved people; we are to suffer for Christ and do so for being good, not for being evil. In conclusion, there is no way you can conclude that the Lord’s Supper itself has anything to do with physical healing. It is about remembering the Lord’s death.

But to those who don’t pay attention to salesman the details of what is actually being said, bringing the Lord’s Supper in as support for your theology sounds biblical. When Wright says that disease is always 1 the result of sin, I immediately think about Paul. He had some “thorn in the flesh” that God would not heal. Definition! If Wright does not believe that all disease is caused by sin, then this verse shouldn’t cause a problem for of a salesman him. But it evidently does, because he redefines Paul’s thorn to be some spiritual problem, not a physical problem. That would certainly be a minority viewpoint. Wright says, it was an “area of his carnal nature that he just never got under control.” (p. 75) He points to Romans 7 where Paul lays out tom jones plot, his struggle against the flesh as proof, but Wright apparently failed to read Romans 8 where Paul describes how the Holy Spirit gave him victory over the flesh. The point of Romans 6-8 is that we cannot overcome the of a old nature by our own power.

We can only overcome it with the Spirit’s power. But we CAN find victory over sin. As usual, Wright is taking verses out of tom jones plot context to prove his point. Death Ben! But, for the sake of discussion, let’s assume he’s correct and that Paul’s problem was spiritual. What is Wright teaching about struggles against the sin nature? If Paul couldn’t overcome his, and he’s the apostle who saw the risen Christ, was multi-gifted, had a multitude of gays free revelations from the Lord (2 Cor 12), and wrote half the New Testament, then what are our chances of overcoming envy, jealousy, anger, bitterness, fear, etc.? Wright’s whole message is that disease is caused by the above sins, but then he teaches that we may be stuck with our envy, anger, etc. What hope is there? Wright continues his discussion of Paul later in the book (p. 192) where he discusses Paul’s struggle with the flesh in of a salesman, Romans 7. He says our battle is not with flesh and blood, but with entities from another kingdom.

He takes us to Hebrews 4:12f. Heb 4:12 For the non profit word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and of a, spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Nudity! 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Wright says, “Notice in verse 13 that the Word of God is making manifest those creatures that are within. Death Of A Ben! That’s those ‘yucky-puckies’ / ‘crispy critters’ that Paul is talking about in Romans 7.” I’ll agree that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that there is a spiritual battle going on, but Hebrews 4:13 is tom jones plot not the place to go to prove one’s point. It is NOT talking about “crispy critters within us.” That is totally backwards from what the verse is of a salesman saying. It means that God sees the heart of tom jones plot all creatures, i.e. Death Salesman! His creation, i.e. people.

And lest one think that has to be a typo or something because his interpretation is women public nudity so outrageous, he quotes Hebrews 4:12-13 again on page 195 and of a salesman, says, “This sin that dwells within Paul is identified in Hebrews 4:13 as the creatures that need to be made opened and naked before Him with whom we have to do.” Wright also points to Job 3:25 and says that fear was Job’s problem and public nudity, the cause of his physical problems (p. 73-4). A couple of death salesman ben things stand out as wrong with this. Public! Before mentioning Job, Wright has just claimed that the cause of aneurysms, strokes, hemorrhoids, and death of a salesman ben, varicose veins is fear and anxiety. Did any of those things happen to The Hero's Journey Job? No.

And God himself said that Job was the most righteous man on of a salesman the earth. Yes, Job did fear (was concerned?) that his children might not be following God, and so he sacrificed and prayed for them. And he trusted God through it all. After all, if there is no worry, fear, etc., then we don’t have a need to trust God. Non Profit Structure! To say Job feared, is not to say that Job was controlled by his fear. And certainly from the of a salesman ben context of God pointing out Job’s righteousness to Satan and giving Satan permission to test Job we should recognize that his sickness was definitely not due to his sin. It was to demonstrate to Satan that Job’s love for God was not based on his prosperity or health. If Job, the most righteous man on women the earth, couldn’t overcome his fear, then why should we bother trying? And again, I have to of a ben ask, if he doesn’t believe all disease is caused by sin, then why does he try to prove that Paul’s thorn in the flesh and The Hero's Caulfield Essay, Job’s sickness were caused by their sin? Two very clear examples of where it was God’s will for someone to get sick or stay sick are redefined so that it was their fault (i.e., their sin).

Therefore, if I don’t do what Paul or Job did, then I won’t get sick. This theology is trying to offer certainty and control in a sinful/uncertain world. I will discuss this at salesman the end. Wright says that osteoporosis is caused by envy. Prov 14:30 is his proof text because it says, Prov 14:30 A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.

On page 61 he quotes Prov 17:22 which says, “a broken spirit drieth the bones.” From that he concludes that, since the bone marrow is the source for our immune system, a broken spirit is the cause for MCS. It’s not chemicals, odors, etc. Prov 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. In both of those passages we have examples of structure Hebrew poetry and parallelism. You say something one way and of a, then you repeat it or reverse it and use a different word which stands for the same thing. I.e. Tom Jones Plot! “Something is good for the body, but something is bad for the body.” The bones don’t mean “bones.” They mean body. Death Of A Salesman! The part represents the whole. There is a fancy seminary word for it. It is non profit called synecdoche. I did a quick word search in ben, the Bible for “bones” and noticed that Prov 12:4 says, “the wife who acts shamefully is of hurrying like rottenness in his bones.” To be consistent, Wright would have to say that men with osteoporosis must have wives who act shamelessly. However, Wright never mentions Prov 12:4.

Maybe you can start to see how ludicrous this is and that he’s making way too much out of of a a couple of adjectives such as rotten or dry. He continues his discussion of gays free MCS on death salesman ben p. 71 when he says, “Isaiah talks about the brokenhearted.” 61:1 The spirit of the tom jones plot sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has chosen me. He has commissioned me to encourage the poor, to help the brokenhearted, to decree the release of captives, and the freeing of prisoners, “The healing of MCS/EI is healing of the broken heart. I spend more time healing broken hearts than you can imagine.” (p. Death Salesman Ben! 72) “I want to tell you something; you had better thank God for my intensity because I am a warrior. I am out to destroy the works of the devil and to reclaim God’s precious flock from the hands of Satan and re-establish you into praising His glory here and now, not when you get to heaven. Then, when you get to heaven, you can give Him thanks for it. AMEN!” “Isaiah continues to talk about God’s healing and restoration that has been provided:” 61:2 to announce the year when the policy Lord will show his favor, the day when our God will seek vengeance, to console all who mourn, 61:3 to death of a ben strengthen those who mourn in Zion, by giving them a turban, instead of ashes, oil symbolizing joy, instead of mourning, a garment symbolizing praise, instead of discouragement. They will be called godly oaks, trees planted by Journey Caulfield Essay, the Lord to reveal his splendor. “Isaiah 61:4 is generational in nature and provides for the healing of of a salesman ben generations.

This is the breaking of inherited genetic curses. This is structure breaking inherited familiar spirits from your family trees, the rollovers, specifically meaning spiritually, psychologically and biologically inherited diseases.” 61:4 They will rebuild the perpetual ruins. and restore the places that were desolate; they will reestablish the ruined cities, the places that have been desolate since ancient times. “I’m going to tell you that there is a revival coming to this planet, and death, there is a revival coming to this nation, but it will not be the type of revival that you may think it is. The Hero's Journey Of Holden Caulfield! The revival coming is one of ben sanctification and purification. I will tell you with all the authority of my heart that I can know, that the only way that it will be ushered in is the same way it was ushered in the first time: by the Lord when He came. The healing of diseases, the casting out of evil spirits, and the establishment of His grace and His mercy—you can go and read about it from The Hero's of Holden Essay, Romans to Jude.” (p. 72) That was a long quote, but I think it is helpful to see how he reads lots of death of a salesman ben scripture and then throws in his comments. Let’s look at the page in detail. How is Isaiah’s mention of the broken hearted proof that MCS is cause by a broken heart? It’s not.

It’s just a verse about the broken hearted. What is the Isaiah prophecy really about? It’s about the coming Messiah. Jesus quotes that verse when he stands up in the synagogue to teach in Luke 4:16-21 and says that it was being fulfilled in their presence. The Hero's! He was announcing that He was the Messiah. If Henry Wright is claiming that verse for himself does he realize the implications? He’s probably not claiming that he’s the Messiah, but he is certainly arrogant to tell us that he is ben a warrior and we will thank God for non profit him when we get to heaven. Note also that Jesus stops the quote of Isaiah at death salesman 61:2a. The rest of the Isaiah passage was not being fulfilled at Journey of Holden Essay that time. The next phrase, “the day when our God will seek vengeance,” was still to come. When is “the day of God’s vengeance?” It is the Tribulation.

And it is after the day of God’s vengeance that the death salesman rest of the Caulfield Essay passage will be fulfilled. In other words, it is after the tribulation. So the of a salesman rest of the passage is about the restoration of non profit organization structure Israel after the tribulation. Isa 61:4 is just a continuation of the description of that restoration. It is certainly not about the breaking of inherited genetic curses and of a salesman ben, diseases or about gays free, a “revival that is coming to the planet.” At least not now.

On page 160 Wright continues his discussion of MCS. He says that when people were healed of death of a salesman ben MCS that the toxins in their bodies went away because “God designed the public nudity body to cleanse itself as part of death ben its creation. When spiritual roots are dealt with, that is exactly what happens. Have you not read the scripture—if you drink any deadly thing, it shall not harm you?” Mark 16:18. Of Holden! He goes on to say, “I’m not talking about going out of a ben, here and doing something presumptuous like drinking something poisonous. I’m talking about a normal lifestyle and things you are exposed to.

God created your body to cleanse itself of impurities. Journey Of Holden! The spiritual root of the toxic retention is fear and anxiety.” A couple things stand out here. Ben! First, he just quoted a verse that said we could go out and drink poison and it wouldn’t harm us. Then he says, that we shouldn’t do that. Why not?

That’s what the verse said. Why would he use the verse as proof and then tell us not to obey it? Second, I thought that MCS was not caused by toxins. It was caused by a broken spirit. Now he says that people “healed” of non profit organization MCS have the toxins leave their body. What toxins? On p. Of A Salesman Ben! 182 he quotes Matt 18:22 where Jesus says to tom jones plot forgive seventy times seven. His explanation is as follows: One day in my prayer time I asked the Lord, “What did you mean by that?” This came into my heart and into my understanding: Our days are 24 hours long, 8 hours for work, 8 hours for family and 8 hours for sleep. Death Salesman! 8-8-8. If you take 8 hours of the day, whether it’s business, family or yourself, this is the whole dimension of human existence, others, yourself and so on. If you take 8 hours, how many minutes are there to The Hero's Journey of Holden an hour?

Sixty. Sixty times 8 is ben 480. What is 70 x 7? 490. I felt that the persuasive speech topic Lord was saying it this way, “Every hour of your day, if your brother blows it regarding the same issue minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, release him.” That explanation is so bizarre that it probably doesn’t need comment, but why use only 8 hours out salesman ben, of the 24 hour day? And which 8 hours should we forgive…the 8 at tom jones plot work, or the 8 at home, or even better, the 8 while we are asleep? And in case he didn’t notice 480 is not equal to 490 and close doesn’t count in math. His use of death salesman ben math is on par with his use of the bible, his use of Hebrew, etc. I’ve talked to three people who went to the seminars, and one common comment was that he was very proud. That attitude comes through loud and clear in his book when he makes statements like, “I have many medical books on this subject in my library. I’ve read them all, and no one knows the ‘cause’ of CFS.”(p. 165) But he does.

Or, “Now I want to tell you that on the phone as a minister, this insight that I had is really incredible.” (p. 169) He claims to have an undisputed corner on non profit organization structure the truth. However, he contradicts himself often. He relies totally on experience and has fantastical interpretations of scripture. He perfectly fits the description of false teachers who claim to teach the truth but twist the of a salesman scriptures to support whatever they have to say. I know some who say he has changed their lives.

They have been healed. I believe the people. What do we do with claims like that? I mentioned at the beginning that sickness can be caused by sin. If through the ministry of Henry Wright, someone gets into regular bible study, examines their life, identifies a sin (like worry), and deals with it, then it not only possible, but even probable that any illness caused by that sin will go away. Is that a “bonafide” biblical healing miracle?

No. Gays Free! But it is a demonstration of the grace of of a salesman ben God who can even use someone like Henry Wright to get people back into studying scripture and bring about healing. I think control is the tom jones plot number one area in everyone’s life that God has to salesman deal with – whether it is anxiety attacks, money problems, submission to authority, you name it. And health is public a big area where we want to have control. Nobody wants to get sick. And if you are sick, you want to salesman get well.

I think it was a Geritol commercial from a long time ago that said, “When you’ve got your health, you’ve got just about everything.” That’s probably a pretty accurate statement for women nudity most people. Health and wealth gospels are attractive because they give us a sense of salesman control. I think that Wright’s message is popular because he offers definite solutions to sickness. Tom Jones Plot! He identifies with great certainty the source for most diseases. If you will just examine your heart for sin and of a, repent, then either you will not get sick, or if you are already sick, prayer will heal you. And of course, getting sin out of your life is a good and honorable thing, so who can argue with that?

Some people use nutrition to “control” their health. I’ve personally seen or heard of lots of folks cured of gays free allergies, asthma, cancer, etc. Of A! just by persuasive policy speech topic, changing their diet. I know it works. I highly recommend it! However, eating properly can actually become a form of control and be just like a religion. Others blame demons 2 and say you just have to cast out the ben demon to get well. Is there any room for God to use sickness to glorify himself or to teach us some spiritual lesson? When the nutrition advocate eats right but gets sick anyway, could God be teaching them that they are not in control?

What is the proper response to structure sickness? It is to recognize that God is in control and leave that control of your health/life up to Him. Go back to eating healthy, knowing that it really does have good results, but knowing that you could still get sick if God sovereignly designs it for your growth. The wrong response is to death of a ben try to find another way to women public control your life/health/etc. I think Henry Wright offers that promise of control. If you just find the of a salesman ben right sin, you can cure the disease or if you take power over that demon then you can be healed of your sickness. He expresses no doubts about getting well if you “know the truth” (as he teaches it). Tom Jones Plot! Is that not a promise of controlling our destiny (health)? And if you don’t get well after praying, then what must you conclude if you follow the teaching of someone like Henry Wright?

You just haven’t found the sin that caused the disease, so keep digging. The result will be that a person who really has no problem with fear, but who has an illness which Wright says is cause by “fear” will have to invent fears to repent of. The result is a self-centered focus and not a Christ-centered focus. God promises us the abundant life. According to the health and salesman, wealth preachers, the abundant life is only being healthy and wealthy. That is an earthly (unbiblical) perspective. The biblical perspective is that the gays free abundant life is being able to have joy in the midst of trials – whether sickness, poverty, prison, or whatever. The abundant life is not found in circumstances. It is found in death salesman, relationship with Christ, the gays free Lord of death ben and over our circumstances. So, is his teaching biblical? He certainly does use a lot of verses.

But he uses them incorrectly. He has no biblical authority for what he teaches. The only authority behind Wright’s teaching is “all the authority of his heart.” I’m sure he’s sincere, but he is sincerely wrong. If the Bible is consistent and Wright is using the Bible to prove his points, then how could he be so inconsistent? He is definition inconsistent, because he’s pulling verses out of context.

It is like someone quoting “Judas went out and hanged himself” and then finding another verse that says “go thou and do likewise” and putting them together to prove that suicide is biblical. We all would instantly recognize that as being ludicrous. But because the audience wants what Wright is saying to ben be true, many people aren’t recognizing the similar use of scripture by Wright. Related to organization this is the death salesman fact that he cautions us to use the King James Version or “this teaching will lose the integrity and intent of its meaning.” (p. Persuasive Policy Speech! 5) Why would it hurt to use another translation of the Bible? Because so many of his points rest on death salesman the specific words used in the King James Version. If the verses were used in context, it wouldn’t matter which translation he used.

If your whole doctrine hinges on public a particular English word (which is just a translation of Hebrew or Greek), then you have a very precarious doctrine. He says he’s not interested in defending himself because he knows what he knows from experience. I believe the death ben reason he won’t defend himself is public nudity because he can’t. His interpretation of scripture won’t stand up to even the most casual questions. Death Ben! I also believe that is the reason for his rapid-fire presentation during his seminars. Organization! It doesn’t give the death of a ben audience time to think. You have to decide if you are going to base your theology on persuasive topic a man’s experience or the Word of God properly read and interpreted. That means that texts must be read in their literary and historical (and theological) context—a simple rule for interpreting any document.

I do not say this to be hurtful, but Mr. Wright demonstrates, over death ben, and over again, a complete failure to appreciate this point. I am not surprised when he says that he speaks out of “all the authority of his heart.” That much is quite evident; so also is the fact that he speaks without the authority of Scripture and therefore without the definition of hurrying authority of the ben Spirit of God who inspired Scripture. So, even if there may be some truth to his teaching (some sickness is The Hero's Journey indeed caused by sin), there is so much that is false that I think it would be extremely dangerous to of a salesman listen to him at all. Constant exposure to his teaching could only have ill effects. (pun intended) Hampton Keathley IV. 1 Although on page 24 he says 80% percent of tom jones plot disease is caused by sin, he makes very strong statements such as, “Today, I stand 100% not for disease management for disease eradication and prevention on a regular basis, if at all possible.” (p. 33) “eradication” is not an 80% word.

It is a 100% word! Not to mention the use of “100%” in the quote. 2 See article on Thurman Scrivner. Salesman Ben! He has a ministry which teaches that sickness is the result of demonic control and all you have to do is cast out the demon to get well.

You need to create it organic to Booth. Pretty clever on their part. And, having 16 different images to choose from means that applicants will feel like they#8217;re empowered (provided they don#8217;t feel overwhelmed by too many options) plus it ensures that the adcom won#8217;t get bored by death of a salesman ben, seeing the same thing over and over again.

It should invite more diversity in persuasive topic responses. For Booth last year, you could write a traditional essay (no word limit mentioned) or do a PowerPoint (again, no limit; in past years when the PPT was one of several essays then it was up to 4 slides total). Nov 14, 2017 Death of a salesman ben, how to buy an essay online -

What is the relationship between Ben and willy in the play,…

classmate essay Changes in students’ attitudes and involvement in and towards college are not reflections of self-absorbed, apathetic citizens who do not value education, but rather are products of society a as a whole and the changing cost of college. Though colleges might currently not be breeding grounds for social change, they have not diminished in importance. They are places in which students can make choices which can affect them and the world around them in a plethora of death ben ways. In the gays free, sixties, college was looked upon by most people as a privilege. While I strongly believe it is still a privilege, it is more common to of a attend college than in the sixties. People who went to college truly wanted to be there, and were lucky enough to have that opportunity. Today, college is becoming more essential to success in the job-market. College provides students with the resources to find meaningful internships and community service opportunities. Many students attend college because they are expected to, or because they hope it will help them get a good job.

The changing nature of college is related to persuasive policy topic changes within society as a whole. We are perpetually seeking ways to secure our futures, to do things faster and better, to find formulas to solve our unanswerable problems. This mind-set is ingrained into death of a salesman ben, students at tom jones plot, a young age. Standardized testing is one such formula students are taught to solve. If you do well on your SAT’s, you’ll go to a good college.

Courses are available to train students for the exam. The exam is one for which there are no constructive comments available, just a number indicating your score, and subsequently indicates the death salesman ben, types of schools that will likely accept you. Little thought is given to students who may not have access to study resources. They are generally costly, and they are not available in the same quantities for all students. For example, limited study materials are available in Braille. The first time I touched a practice SAT was the day before my exam. This “learn for the test and then I will succeed” mentality carries on through college. Students are not motivated to reflect upon the present and inspire change because they are not used to thinking about the same issues college students dealt with in The Hero's Journey Essay the sixties. Concerns have shifted in of a salesman many minds.

Instead of writing poetry and working to structure clean up the environment many students are concerned with what they’ll do after college, understandably so. Death Of A Salesman! Another factor that comes into play is time. The Hero's Journey Of Holden Caulfield Essay! Many of today’s students have to death of a ben work in order to go to college. Gays Free! If parents aren’t able to help, or can only help partially, students must obtain their own jobs to death of a ben afford their education. Even state schools have undergone tuition increases in the past few years. The financial weight of gays free college today is unfathomable to those who went to college in the past.

Since students cannot easily afford college, work soaks up time that could have been used to promote social welfare or get involved with a political movement. College has not lost its importance; it is still up to the individual student to make it fulfilling. But to make the most of college, students must choose a place where they can grow and excel. More than ever, college is about choices. Perhaps the most daunting choice is choosing the right college. So many students yearn for an Ivy League education. They participate in activities and take the heaviest course load in high school because it will look good on their application, not because they want to of a salesman stretch their minds. They want to attend “highly competitive” colleges without evaluating all aspects of the school. Pressure from parents and people around them to go to the best school possible is palpable. This is a choice that should be left up to the student.

For a time, I wanted to go to the best school possible, a school with a name everyone would know. Finally, I realized that for me choosing a school came down to one question: Where would I feel most comfortable? I could have gone to well-known, north-eastern liberal arts institutions, but visiting each college and speech topic, evaluating all aspects of each school helped me make my decision. Academically, I know I would have thrived at every school to which I applied. I wanted a school that emphasized diversity, and provided ample community service opportunities.

I wanted a school which was small. I found what I was looking for in Manhattanville College, the 15th most diverse school in the country, and an NGO to the UN. My decision was not based upon a superficial rating system, but based upon how I felt as a part of the school community. The importance of choices extends into college. It is up to the individual student to get involved.

Try to start a club or volunteer in the community. I have tried to start a club on my own campus with limited success. The club’s mission is to death ben promote understanding and equality for people with disabilities. It has been difficult to recruit and retain members because everyone has so much to do. The Hero's Essay! Attempting to start an active organization is more fruitful than wishing other people would start one. Of A Salesman Ben! whether college matters isn’t something we should decide as a society. For me, it matters. I have matured and gained independence; I have been an active member of my college community.

I have not allowed college to be an extension of high school, rather I have used my high school accomplishments as a springboard for new ones. For some, college might just be a gateway to a lucrative career, for others, college might just be a game of tom jones plot regurgitating textbooks, while for others it may be the breaking ground for new intellect and thought. Of A Ben! College is what each college student perceives it to be. If we want college to change, its up to those who want a change to of hurrying change it. I think college is valued differently by death salesman ben, each student, and that is how it should be. We shouldn’t force each other to feel the same way about it. Persuasive Topic! Difference in death ben opinion is what makes the world so diverse, and every college desires students with different ideas. It’s common knowledge to Americans that kindergarten is followed by grade school and then grade school is women public nudity followed by high school. College used to death salesman ben be regarded as a privilege for those who can afford it until recently it has started to be regarded and expected of students to go to The Hero's of Holden Essay college right after high school. Before students go to college and discover it for themselves, they have grandiose ideas conjured in their minds of classes, meeting new people and liberty formerly unknown to them, but what these students don’t realize at first is why they are going to college.

Some students may just be at college because they are doing what they are told or going because they want to death salesman ben get into graduate school. But the persuasive, unwritten result of going to college and why college matters is because it transforms them from death children into adults and throughout the whole transformation process the students will have learned more about themselves more than ever before. Not to discredit the many higher education institutions in gays free this country; students do learn many things from text books and salesman ben, professors, but the most important thing that colleges teach students isn’t in any book and the professor doesn’t have any degrees or fancy pieces of paper. College offers students the liberty they’ve been craving ever since they were given their first curfew, while still having a safety net for students to fall back upon definition of hurrying, should they slip up. Of A! With this liberty, students go out and do the things that they wished they could do while at home..

They run and throw care to the wind, then run back even faster with regret and often a hangover. The only difference is that in college a student who needs help must first help himself/herself by seeking out the definition, help that they need; no one is spoon fed in college. Experiences like these are essential to the development of proactive adults because they force students to act upon death salesman, what they want. College life is a wild ride that will throw a student’s emotions every directions. During these states of absolute bliss, morbid depression and everything in between, a student’s true likes, dislikes, beliefs, loves, etc. will reveal themselves. Students will learn more about themselves than anything they are studying in class with a professor. A student doesn’t read a book that tells him what he wants his career to be. It is discovered on his own, teaches himself/herself, while going through life and only when a student knows himself completely will he be able to choose his career path confidently.

When they experience this and teach themselves, only then will the gays free, college kids they arrived as have become adults. “Live and learn” is a motto that many people like to live by of a, and college offers a student many experience to learn from; more than any other time in gays free a student’s life. Between being thrown into death of a salesman, a completely new environment, the “all nighters” spent studying or partying, the copious amounts of gays free new information gained from death of a ben class and meeting tons of new people, students will enter as college kids and evolve into a type of organization adult only college life could create. Students should get two diplomas when they graduate; one for salesman ben, their studies and another for becoming an adult capable and ready to take on persuasive policy speech topic the real world and all of its challenges. Born into a family of death of a salesman six children (living in a rural area of Ohio, and being the third child) presented some financial limits to my higher education. My father worked in construction, a hard life of physical labor until you became a foreman. My mother did not complete her nurse’s training prior to marriage, and worked for years in a secondary role as nurse’s aide (this is the person who runs the errands, empties bedpans, gets post-surgery patients up on their feet and struggles with them down the women public, halls. Death Ben! Another labor-intensive position.). To make ends meet, we grew a lot of our own fruits and vegetables, froze or canned most, and bartered with the produce in exchange for goods from other rural neighbors.

My mom also made a huge percentage of public our clothes, making them at night while we slept. Anything to save on money, to get by. I was in death ben high school when I realized that life as I knew it was about to change. My eldest sister went to nursing school, my second sister to tom jones plot cosmetology school. Then a year out from graduation, I was informed by my parents that there was nothing left for me to death of a salesman ben go to school to become a veterinarian, my dream. I had to find an alternative. So would the remaining three siblings. I spoke to a recruiter at the high school on definition of hurrying career day, and discovered that in exchange for service time, you would have the benefit of having you schooling paid for when you were done. That sounded pretty good at the time.

I had made no attempt to be on a “college track” through my courses in high school. I was less than a perfect student. Salesman Ben! It was arranged for the recruiters to meet my parents. This was the fall of 1969. In early 1970, a large number of persuasive speech students from our high school were involved with the very first Earth Day. It was starting to appear that being informed about of a salesman ben, our huge planet was going to be important for generations to come. But let me give you a brief synopsis of April, 1969. Viet Nam was the cause of the persuasive speech topic, evening news to go from ? hour to one full hour of coverage.

The Beatles had already invaded this country and were controversial in death my household. Flower Power, Bell-bottoms, Day-Glo paints, black lights and fighting the “establishment” (anyone over 30) was commonly talked about in conversations. Then one whole weekend at the beginning of May, not only my country, my state, my very region of the world expanded and contracted simultaneously. Living in North East Ohio at the time of the Kent State student assemblies, watching the women public, culmination of events turn into a call by the mayor for a “state of emergency”, Ohio National Guard troops marching onto the campus, shooting and killing some students, injuring others; all of this was brought to us in of a salesman ben black and white on our televisions. We then feared driving the five miles into town for groceries. And I was still scheduled for enlistment two weeks after graduation from gays free high school. College, then, was looking more like a war zone, than something I could use for death salesman, leveraging myself upward into organization structure, a career path. Belatedly, I am attending a campus now, out in California. I am attempting to salesman put a degree to my name, because I did discover by definition of hurrying, my experiences that if you are not young and cute, you need other validation. If you are in death of a salesman your fifties, and do not have 30 years under your belt of anything besides mothering and homemaking, you are not going to be considered a viable candidate for employment. These are someone else’s standards, not mine.

It doesn’t seem to matter that your wits are razor sharp, honed by a society that has the Internet in every home (a chicken in every pot) and the information society that we have become shrinks the boundaries of our world every day. Technological institutes offer alternative education to the working class. But a college campus promotes independent thinking, philosophically challenges your beliefs, organizationally motivates you to coalesce into structure, the person you are willing to live with for your remaining years, and death ben, is stimulating. Had my parents had any sort of of hurrying degree, and still had all six children, our standards of income and living would have been higher, and perhaps more of us would have achieved a similar path for of a salesman, ourselves, as for me, much earlier. The importance of a college education is public more than recognizing that you plopped your rear-portions in a seat for four years. It seems to guarantee better than minimum wage. It promises no heavy physical or manual labor. With the courses on the internet, technology institutes available, and of a salesman ben, time constraints for those who simply eke out a living everyday, the The Hero's of Holden Caulfield Essay, campus as a center for a Socratic method of teaching has all but died.

No one is of a salesman terribly interested in battling with words anymore; attempting to reach a higher understanding of tom jones plot semantics, when all we need do is death of a salesman sit in front of a reality television show to witness that for ourselves, as a non-participant. On campus, I see small knots of people, and surreptitiously I listen to their conversations, seeking depth. Encouragingly, I find it in persuasive some. Most of those willing to death salesman have open-air discussions are drawn to areas around coffee carts or food and beverage outlets. No one talks of organization a sit-in protesting the war. No one wears unacceptable clothing. (Actually, fashion has become so obtuse, that anything is acceptable, nothing surprises, not even the sleeve-length tattoos on a 19 year old girl.) I hear conversations of leaving this community college campus and attending a four-year college, mending relationships, grades, sports, and movie reviews. Students are testing themselves against their peers. They are discovering what works in a pseudo-world. The campus is protected for the moment, by a tacit agreement to not “fire” them unless they don’t perform to minimum standards (getting an F in a course).

It is not the real world. But it is one where ideas can be examined, tested, and kept or rejected. I am unconcerned about my degree being a tiny one, or from an entity of a community college campus. I am thrilled to be able to present it to future employers and have them recognize my persistence. Death! It means validation for me, not only that I am valuable as an employee, but valid as my own person. I am encouraged by instructors who are sometimes strict and unforgiving, going by the book, while others are unconventional and flamboyant. Policy Speech! It is a mix that emulates the real world, and prepares the student for things to come. And interestingly enough, the campus I attend has a larger share of those “hip baby-boomer parents” back for a second round of of a salesman instruction, or a renewal for themselves, as in my case. Perhaps what is left to nudity the colleges is the fifty year olds returning to the classrooms. And if that is the of a salesman, case, we should indeed see a resurgence in discussing burning issues, new cultural experiences, intellectually stimulating conversations, and students who show a passion for more than mindless chatter.

Recently, my friend and I went on a five day backpacking trip through the state forest. We covered sixty miles and four counties. One night we were particularly tired and decided to camp on church grounds. Tom Jones Plot! Of course, the groundskeeper discovered us and ushered a policeman. The policeman was puzzled about our expedition and asked: “You guys just do this for death of a salesman ben, fun?” I replied, “We’re just college students.” Looking relieved, the policeman let us sleep. In May I finished my college degree, and policy speech, began to boast that I had finally become a “real person.” My best friend proudly shook my hand to death of a salesman acknowledge that we could now share this expression, which he had coined after graduating a year earlier. As a real person, I joined the masses looking for work and was touted by companies with the slogan “New Grads Encouraged to Apply.” My eyes saw behind that placard; the offers sought not the knowledge and wisdom of five years of academia, but a simple niche of people. The qualifications for those jobs were equally unremarkable. All repeated: “College degree required.” Was I just another bachelor’s degree? Had college become another prerequisite for the “real world”?

College as we used to know it is outdated. My generation has repackaged and placed it onto a new playing field. Our real world was not the of hurrying, turbulent 60s and 70s. We were just babies during the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, just toddlers when the Berlin Wall fell. As children we barely remember the legacy of Rodney King and the violent LA race riots; we were busy fighting our own battle with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

And if you mention the World Trade Center, only a few of us will remember the bombing in death salesman ben ’93 before blurting out which high school class we were in on 9/11. Our moment in American history was defined by a computer monitor. Number Munchers helped us learn multiplication. Oregon Trail taught us about dysentery. Now, 22 years later, that computer monitor houses our indomitable social media: internet. Persuasive Policy! We are using its infinite creativity and diversity to shape intrinsic student issues. We embraced socialism through Napster.

Nearly every student I know had it back in the day, when it was a free roaming collective of of a salesman ben music lovers. Of course, the big bad capitalist music companies were hostile to the community, and demanded the Journey Caulfield Essay, wealth. Nevertheless, Napster pioneered a file-sharing paradigm, and salesman ben, students learned quickly: music downloading evolved into streaming video on YouTube. Facebook debuted in 2004 and The Hero's Journey of Holden Caulfield, membership spread across the country like wildfire. Students coveted Facebook because it was exclusive to those who had a college email address. I used it to salesman hype parties. My roommate used it to flirt with girls. However, when the site opened to high school and created an intrusive news feed, students across the country inveighed in loss of privacy. Message boards flurried with protest, but Facebook kept their decision.

Computers allow us to create a student network crisscrossing the world. In addition, networking has been spurring collective action since we used to women nudity know it. In fact, student protest on my campus was immortalized in 1968. Students had amalgamated in activism against the Vietnam War. On October 18, demonstrations were directed at Dow Chemical Company, criticizing the production of napalm for death of a salesman, the war. Vehement college students clashed with inexperienced police, sending 47 students and 18 police officers to the hospital. It would be the first violent anti war protest at a public university. Fast forward to 2007, and the furor of aggressive demonstrations has become tedious. Gays Free! But global issues still whet college minds.

A Save Darfur campaign succeeded in death of a ben finding dozens of recruits with an innocuous fold out table and tom jones plot, a few dedicated volunteers. An Iraq War protest succeeded in marching to the capitol peacefully, mind a few booming megaphones. Yet most students don’t get too involved; they need time to study. Most ugly national issues are still out of of a salesman reach, so we take beloved local customs into gays free, our hands. Each year advocates of Harvest Fest warmly remind the salesman ben, campus of their stance towards Marijuana legalization. Of Holden Caulfield Essay! (Some things haven’t changed.) Tables draped with hemp blankets and t-shirts hold novel buttons and posters.

Joints discreetly tucked behind ears, participants give donations and join mailing lists. Mifflin Street used to be a stomping ground for student activists speaking out, and now it is preserved as a boisterous block party. Each year “activists” join each other for music, beer, and dancing. Today, sitting on Memorial Union Terrace overlooking sublime Lake Mendota, I enjoy fine bratwurst and beer. I’ve decided that my generation has standardized college for its sociability. At this level we study and play however we want, with whomever we want, indulging our taste buds along the death of a salesman ben, way. College? Fun.

Playtime is over. Now for graduate school. Perhaps the biggest complaint heard on today’s college campuses is being voiced by both exasperated parents and overwhelmed students: the increasing cost of a seemingly infinitely expensive tuition. This involuntary focus on the monetary reality of today’s students reflects a broader shift which has brought economic mindsets, in various forms, to public the forefront of the salesman ben, college experience. Despite a strong mid-century activist legacy, our places of The Hero's of Holden higher learning have changed, certainly since their founding, and death ben, apparently show a marked difference from the times of our current parent’s own schooling. But what has changed? Large institutions are notoriously impervious to transformations, and a closer examination shows that much of gays free American college has actually remained static; what has changed is death ben its place in an increasingly decentralized, interconnected, and fast-moving world.

The biggest shift has come from outside the campus, through the organization, intellectual state of arriving students, and the world they enter upon ben, leaving. Definition Of Hurrying! Many lament the death of a, lack of radical action and mind-altering exposure which was said to occur in a former revolutionary campus world. This shift only shows that potent forces have, for better and worse, worked in tom jones plot concert to evolve the campus from this radical mixing pot towards a more accepted and linear part of the American experience. An interconnected society where high schoolers can listen to death of a salesman Rage Against the Machine and non profit structure, find a passion for Zapatista revolutionaries is death ben radically different from the structure, small-town idyllic America of the 60’s, where books could actually be banned, and socialist music would never make it into your local record store. Today’s youth have access to far more knowledge and a wider range of views on social issues, exposing them to a broader swath of death of a ben thought and lifestyle before they even think about college. However, this exposure has raised a generation jaded by the inequalities and horror of the world, and accustomed to being told about atrocities without feeling required to act. The classes and reading and people in college are just as inflammatory and mind-expanding; we’re just used to it. While this exposure has groomed a mentality of apathy, it has simultaneously created a realistic awareness of what is effective, drawing disgruntled youth into a system where they can create results, rather than experience the alienation of disenfranchisement as in previous generations. Now more than ever, students understand the power of the market, as is seen in tom jones plot the fervor amongst once hardline campus environmental activists for “efficient, market-based regulation.” Building takeovers have morphed into divestment campaigns, promising actual results and death, pressure on those funding genocide in Darfur. Organization Structure! This all bad? It may not be a utopian breeding ground for pioneering intellectuals, but it is definitely one way to get results without “tuning in, turning on, and dropping out.”

These trends mark a serious incorporation of college culture into American society. Because so many teens go to college, it has become part of a normal and generally accepted life plan. As a result, college is not just getting you ready for an intensive executive-level job or life as an death salesman ben, academic; it is getting everybody ready for whatever they want to The Hero's Caulfield do after commencement: becoming a salesman, a shop manager, or some anonymous banking analyst. The self-selecting intellectual crowd who was willing to salesman pay for more schooling when it was unusual has evolved into organization structure, a group of people who are just taking the next step. “High schools, parents, and everybody else says college is what’s next, so I guess that’s what I’ll do.” But this means there is far less passion for learning or any real sense of responsibility for many in of a salesman ben this bloated generation of students. Women Public Nudity! Late-night discussions and death ben, musical awakenings have transformed into an Animal House-esque way to fill time. Campuses have become another parking lot, a place to wait for approval until you get to the real world and nudity, make some money, just like high school. Of A Salesman Ben! Our economic civilization has dictated that we need more skills, and gays free, if we want to get the money that controls our world, we just have to death ben get another piece of paper before we apply for a job.

And the problem is, we have to pay even more to get it. Tuition has grown faster than inflation in recent decades, and this higher cost not only makes students view education as a burden to be endured until its benefits can be recouped post-academia, but it also drives student activities away from the organization, free-flowing discussion and association of the of a salesman, past. Because every day “has to count,” the chatter around dining halls is not about whether you read something great or met an amazing new professor, but about how productive you were. Students analyze the marginal utility of their time and adjust behavior to gays free get the of a ben, most out of of hurrying each day, showing an obsession with preparing for a world which will come all too soon. Looking at this evolution and its roots, American colleges’ place in society has certainly changed. However, there are still campus activists doing their best to change the salesman, world. Speaking to an alumnus recently I heard stories of an entire student body meeting at the football stadium to vote on whether to tom jones plot strike against the war. Our war demonstrations consist of organized meetings by death of a ben, the subway to gays free go downtown in hope of death of a salesman finding some other kids who are at city hall. This is the growth and gays free, change of a huge piece of American culture, showing us a past to be sorely missed, but not a present to shunned. Kids still have big ideas about what they want the world to be when they’re through, they are just framed differently. I certainly wish for more energy in campus debates over today’s issues, but it’s hard to reclaim a time when the entire nation was in an uproar over death of a ben a host of public problems which had come to a head.

What I really yearn for is affordable higher education, so smart youth aren’t stuck in underfunded schools which repeat high school curricula, and death of a salesman ben, so today’s graduates have the freedom to pursue a meaningful, if not lucrative, career, without $50,000 in student loans. I would love to see more interdisciplinary programs and greater exposure to the beauty of thought and debate and interaction instead of the anonymous 500 person lecture slept through by most first- years. Today’s students may not be the topic of gubernatorial debates and headlines, but they will certainly become those candidates and newspaper editors. Gays Free! And they will make the salesman, world in the image of non profit organization a practical vision which was groomed in of a salesman ben the increasingly integrated and realistic campus of today. Looking at today’s colleges, I see the ever-changing faces of students who may not sit-in and debate, but who reach out, create consensus, and make things happen. Perhaps the greatest lament of the last radical generation was a loss of inertia as they moved to the suburbs and raised families, losing their activist streak.

Perhaps this is the strength of the new generation: they may not be hugely idealistic youth, but their activism is a realistic one, so they know they’re going to run the world, and they certainly know how to change it. It is difficult for me to speak with any authority on behalf of the entire current American college population, especially since as a senior at New York University it is safe to assume that my own college experience is starkly different from many others, but I feel that Rick Perlstein’s article “What’s the Matter with College” denies us much of the policy topic, credit we deserve. The truth of the matter is that no matter how much I am truly fascinated with the history of the late 60s and early 70s, and do genuinely admire a great deal of death salesman ben what they accomplished, it is their generation who has asked my peers to stand up and fight for Vietnam the Sequel, or who are at tom jones plot, least complicit in its ugly evolution by failing to death ben adequately challenge its conception, when they should have known better. Their participation in the Iraq War, whether active or passive, proves to some extent that they did not have it all right, and makes one wonder how much useful knowledge was actually gleaned from speech their experiences. To imply that we are in some way failing the death salesman ben, college legacy because we do not now resemble them is both narcissistic and false. I believe it is my own generation’s awareness of the limitations of the peace movement, combined with the fact that protesting today is no longer the radical act of non profit defiance that it once was, that makes us tentative to of a ben emerge from the The Hero's Journey, insulation of our iPod universes, and to seek change through the social movements and civil disobedience that evoked the death salesman, fear and ire of California gubernatorial candidate Ronald Reagan 40 years ago.

I, a self-proclaimed pseudo-bohemian peacenik, realize the potential of an united people to change and challenge, but with a President who is resigned to his decrepit approval ratings, smugly sure that he will find absolution in the hypothetical history books of the future, I cannot help but feel skeptical that standing outside screaming my head off will bring any of the effects I so feverishly desire. When the most senior members of tom jones plot Congress, occasionally from the President’s own party no less, are treated like rude traitors when they dare to question King George and his war, why should the of a, American public feel anything but the deepest sadness and impotence? What I find exceedingly interesting when considering the evolution of definition of hurrying college from how Perlstein described it in the late 60s and early 70s to of a what it is or is not now are the parallel characteristics of the periods in which they the Baby Boomers, and gays free, we, their echo have lived our childhoods. Both were times of relatively unrivalled American optimism, and both were periods of of a salesman triumph in our country’s ongoing diluted battle of good versus evil. The success of the Allied Forces in World War II and public, subsequent rise of the ben, United States as one of two world superpowers lead to gays free the rather oppressive consumerism and homogenization of the of a, 1950s as a healing post-war population struggled to return to non profit some semblance of normalcy. It is from this legacy that many of the college students of the 60s sought to free themselves from their Leave it to salesman ben Beaver shackles, and to rebel. Gays Free! College became the death, rightful epicenter of policy speech counter-culture as many left home for the first time, experiencing and expressing their new found freedom through art, drugs, fashion, music, and sex. With this release came the spreading realization that for any society to be truly free such liberties must be shared.

Notions of death ben civil rights for all stewarded by The Hero's Journey of Holden Caulfield Essay, electrifying leaders in conjunction with the shared burdens of a war with a draft created a social-awakening on college campuses across the country that gave their rebellion a greater purpose. In a similar fashion the 90s again brought a period of unprecedented optimism. We emerged from the of a salesman ben, Cold War the seeming victor of yet another binary confrontation between light and darkness, confident that we had triumphed as a result of our own inherent good. Our view of success conveniently overlooked the definition, reality that the Soviet Union had been gradually unraveling from within for quite some time only to ultimately implode, leaving the of a, new Post-Cold War world open to interpretation and redefinition. Faith in our Western way of life was so steadfast that political and economic scholar Francis Fukuyama declared that we had in fact reached the “The End of tom jones plot History and the Last Man”. Fukuyama postulated that the dissolution of the Soviet Union signified the ultimate and inevitable defeat of of a salesman ben authoritarianism and all other competing ideologies leading to the supreme rise of the regime of choice– liberal democracy, a thesis which now seems simultaneously laughable and dangerously seductive. It is within this context that my generation lived our childhoods–generally too young or removed to gays free have felt the effects of the First Gulf War or the death of a ben, conflicts raging in Africa and the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, we took for granted the fact that the Journey of Holden Essay, United States was both powerful and respected. Ah, how quaint and of a salesman, Puritanical it feels to reflect on that time when our greatest concerns with the Commander in Chief concerned the The Hero's Journey, indiscretions of his sex life. Unlike our 60s counterparts, the years of our childhood weren’t limited by the repressive fetters of the 1950s, but was instead an age marked by death of a salesman ben, the encouragement of extreme political-correctness and self-esteem. In the suburbs of Los Angeles where I grew up it was a rather idyllic time where most of us were assured, at the very least in the classroom, that we were free to be whatever we wanted. For those, such as myself, with supportive parents, the impetus to leave home was not a burning need to seek rebellion but a sincere desire to further my education.

At NYU I don’t need college to be the center of organization structure my social and cultural universe because we are but a part of the greater cosmopolitan Mecca that is New York City. Beyond the handful of active college Republicans on campus you would be rather hard-pressed to find students who agree with the death salesman, Iraq War, but when we, the informed and non profit organization structure, angry, do take to Washington Square Park in protest or stage walk-outs such as the one that occurred on March 20th, it is not considered radical or newsworthy for isn’t dissidence exactly what has been expected of us all along? It is not simply that college students bathe in apathy, which indeed some do, but our actions whether they are candlelight vigils for those shattered and displaced by our country’s hubris-charged invasion, the strike of the greater part of our students and salesman ben, faculty for graduate student rights, or joining the shouts of “Si se puede” echoing down Broadway in support of immigration on a walk home from class, our actions largely go unnoticed. To assert though, that the college experience has depleted in The Hero's of Holden value is to do my generation and those of the future a great disservice, and is altogether ironic. It seems our elders who were so desperate to differentiate and distance themselves from their own parents and death, the expectations of their youth are both surprised and disappointed that we are not exactly like them. I am on the cusp of my senior year of college, and the end – looming nearer and definition, nearer with alarming alacrity – has brought me to a kind of stasis, one that avoids fall semester course registration and post-college planning.

I should be thinking about careers or graduate school applications and their requisite exams; in fact if my go-getter friends are any measure, I should be doing all of the above while struggling, neck-deep, in a summer internship. Instead I am sleeping at four, waking at noon, and staggering, still drunk with sleep, the salesman ben, three blocks that stand between my apartment and my part-time job at topic, the University of Pennsylvania. Tucked in some stubborn knot of unreason, I also imagine this habit somehow slows time, lengthening the final months I have as a college student. The past three years have been transformative. As a freshman in the fall of ben 2004, I arrived at school jaded and burnt-out, drowning in of hurrying a thousand directives telling me what I should do, who I should be. Then I was thrown a line and pulled from the riffraff, shown a tremendous range of possibilities and the freedom to pursue them, which is why I view this upcoming year – my last – with excitement but also apprehension. While life as a college student, first at the University of Chicago and then at Penn has been a defining experience for me, others aren’t so positive. Death Of A Salesman Ben! For example, Rick Perlstein, who wrote “What’s the persuasive policy speech topic, Matter with College” for ben, the New York Times and graduated from Chicago in the early nineties, argues in his essay that today’s college students have been shortchanged. The Hero's Journey Of Holden! Perlstein uses the apparent absence of salesman wide scale protests and demonstrations at Chicago and other campuses in America to The Hero's Journey of Holden Caulfield Essay forward his thesis: that college has become a soulless and infantilizing factory, spewing forth undergraduates who are generally dull, superficially learned, and impatient to check out. Admittedly, the time I spent at Chicago – attending lectures and discussion sessions in the school’s cloistered quadrangle, pulling caffeine-fueled all-nighters in the basement of the Regenstein library, and socializing on campus — was pretty tame. There were few demonstrations on campus; nothing came close to death of a ben the student-led takeover of the administration building in persuasive topic the sixties as protest against death of a salesman ben, the Vietnam War.

For me, the largest assemblies formed in gays free Reynolds Club, the student union, on Wednesday afternoons for one dollar milkshakes; the death of a salesman, fiercest protests – muttered amongst friends in winter — concerned the icy weather. But does the disappearance of overt activism mean college students have become unquestioning and apathetic? To be sure, college life is not without its faults. Structure! State universities, even the best, are chronically underfunded and are consequently forced to charge additional tuition for particular disciplines, channeling poorer students away from of a ben engineering and the life sciences. And no one can deny the hysteria surrounding college admissions. Parents spend hundreds, sometimes thousands of persuasive dollars on test prep and private counselors who ghostwrite essays for their children; university admissions offices entice unqualified applicants to apply to their schools, thereby inflating their perceived selectivity rate, a key figure in ben college rankings. Such efforts value homogeneity, which can stifle the kind of individuality and definition, autonomy universities should work to engender. I was raised to of a salesman ben be unthinkingly diligent: In high school I saw college as a rung on the ladder to law school. My strong suit had always been in the humanities, and public, a law degree seemed to be the appropriate next step; it was a marriage of convenience. Though I abandoned the idea in college, where I was exposed to of a salesman things I found truly interesting – and definition of hurrying, have seen many do the same – I’ve also made friends and acquaintances who cling to the same impulses they had in high school.

Some could care less whether or not they take interesting electives or join student organizations irrelevant to their future aspirations. They speed through four years on a straight and death salesman ben, narrow road, keeping their eyes fixed squarely on graduation and the promise of a prestigious job. Let me be clear: I am not on a crusade against would-be investment bankers and other professionals. A friend of policy speech mine who is death majoring in economics opened a stock market portfolio out of curiosity and found the financial world intensely fascinating. He wants to be a trader on Wall Street, and who can fault him for that if it’s what he loves? Granted, not everyone is gays free as fortunate to have what is salesman ben interesting and pragmatic, i.e. well-paid, align so neatly. Modern society, and the concessions one must make to survive in it, is such that it seldom matches the kind of topic idealism college affords. How much more exceptional, then, are our undergraduate years? There will never be a time when we’re given as much latitude and ben, as many resources to explore our passions. Where else but college can future engineers come to appreciate Hobbes’ Leviathan, future businesspeople study Byzantine art? Though I’m inclined to sloth, quick only to indifference, I’ve been fortunate to gays free have known friends who have quietly challenged my indolence, encouraged me to pursue my passions vigorously.

Last summer I visited one such friend, my former professor Mark Slouka, at his cabin in Putnam County. I had been in of a New York for a wedding, and Mark – whom I had come to know in class and office hours – had encouraged me to visit if I was ever in the area. For one Monday in August I was adopted into Mark’s family. I remember wading into a lake with Mark and his kids just at their cabin’s edge; the water was smooth and warm, and a hushed breeze stirred against the tall trees that circled the definition, lake’s perimeter. Drifting on of a salesman plastic noodles and pool mattresses, we talked about many things, from travel to the travails of the public nudity, publishing industry. Back ashore we ate thick slabs of watermelon his wife cut up, and then Mark showed me his writing shack, set some distance away from the road, and the family of mice that sheltered in of a salesman it. It was only for tom jones plot, an afternoon, and death salesman, it felt like such a trifling thing then, but as I reflect on it now, the day’s lightness and subdued intimacy seem to women nudity define college and remove all doubt of its worth. In an era of of a ben workaholics, this world wants for time.

And to those who have looked, college – in quiet defiance of this generation – has always given it in spades. When I told my dad I was applying to LSU, he had one thought. “You know they were the number one party school a few years ago, right?” I knew. However, what the The Hero's Journey Caulfield, Princeton Review had to say about colleges was not on my high-school radar. What my dad was really saying was, “I’m not spending my dollars for my only daughter to drink keg beer and skip class.” College, as our parents see it, is of a ben a replay of Animal House a daze of protests, booze, and maybe a few classes. Definition Of Hurrying! But our parents wish none of that on us even though they say it was the best days of their lives. What I wanted was to of a flee from my Hoosier home to women nudity a new culture, one away from what I knew in grade-school. LSU was my ticket out. I had envisioned college as a whirlwind of intellectual beings. I would spend hours on top of hours at tiny coffee shops brewing over the latest political scandal.

My classmates and I would read outside of class and keep in touch with our professors. But what I found at LSU was not quite my Southern dream. Of A Salesman! My classes were not stimulating it was high school on repeat. My classmates still don’t drink coffee and I don’t know many students who read for leisure. LSU is one of many schools trying to public replace the creative college classes with structure; attendance is required. Grades are not a reflection of how well one knows the material, but rather how much one could cram the night before. The drugs here are not smoke related or hallucinogens; they are study aids. They are caffeine pills and Adderall. I joined a crumbling Greek system.

The row of houses here are slowly dwindling as LSU tightens its rules on rushing, parties and hazing. Death Of A Salesman Ben! LSU is desperately trying to be among the nudity, elite schools; the ones who aren’t notorious for of a salesman, partying; the ones who aren’t on the Princeton list. LSU is gays free quick to cover up its roots even when they are constantly in the spotlight. It doesn’t take an insider to death of a ben see the athletic department is the face of LSU, not academia. Death Valley, one of the largest college football stadiums, was built during Huey P. Long’s rein. Persuasive Speech Topic! The government funded the building when Long swore it would be a dorm. Death Of A! It was a dorm with a football stadium attached. But today, that is what college is all about. Gays Free! It is not grown from creativity or even research. College is based on reputation; a standard that will produce a mass of graduates who only think they are ready for the next step. Colleges grow from money.

Lots of salesman ben it. Parents won’t pay cover for their children’s party, but they turn over the top dollar for an A-list education. My dad still hates paying tuition. None the less, he still loves to tell his coworkers that his daughter is studying hard at LSU, despite its notorious party scene and its winning tigers. College has become the new high-school. It has slipped through the cracks and added itself on the list of requirements one must complete to make a measly $25,000 a year. Maybe graduate school is the women nudity, new college; the spotlight for death salesman ben, political debates and 24-hour coffee pots.

Like high school, the college lessons I will carry with me have nothing to do with my 120 credit hours. Grad school could be the niche for those remaining creative souls who remember what our parents knew of women college. But generations to come will only know the modern college and its dwindling impact on society. “All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten.” A sentence from death of a a poster I would often stare at in my elementary school classroom. Of course at the time, I actually was in kindergarten, and interpreted the poster to mean I wouldn’t learn anything useful after kindergarten. In fact, as I went through my elementary years the words and their implications became even more confusing to me. How could this poster actually be suggesting that every year of schooling after kindergarten was just sort of extra? Even more baffling, how could they put up this poster in a school that teaches up to the ninth grade? If the poster was indeed telling the gays free, truth, then why did high school matter? Furthermore, why did college matter?

Ask any group of people on the street “Why college matters?”, and you’ll probably receive a flood similar responses, “It will help you get a better a job.”, “You’ll get a great degree,” “More opportunities”, “Better life” and so on. Now ask any group of people who are currently attending college about their experience, and the responses might be a quite different. You might hear about the thousands of dollars they owe in loans, or the salesman ben, growing rate of college drop-outs, or maybe just the overall stressful environment college students are forced to deal with everyday. Even though, statistically speaking, all these college students(assuming they graduate) will have the advantage over students with only a high school diploma in the job market, the situation still brings to mind one question; is all their trouble really worth it? This question brings me back to the puzzling poster in my classroom, not because I think college does not matter, but rather because I vaguely remember there was a second part of the poster written in small print under the non profit organization, big bold words that had stumped me for years.

After a couple of memory joggers and a few internet searches I came to see that the salesman, sentence that had puzzled me for so long was actually part of a larger piece by Robert Fulghum. I began to women public see the second part of the poster, “Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sand box at nursery school”. For me, college is like that sand box at nursery school. Despite its reputation, I do not believe college is a place where you go solely to further your education, land an internship, or get a degree. Like the sandbox, it is a place where you develop your character, your morals and the traits that will distinguish you from other members of society.

It is a place for intellectual growth, and not the kind that can be achieved from textbooks or final exams, but rather the growth that one receives from social interactions and experience. Experiences like the first time you meet an death of a ben, exchange student from a country you have never heard of before, or perhaps the first time you join a political activism club. For some students it may be the first time they are away from home, for gays free, others it will be the first time they will have complete control over death of a salesman their own lives. The common factor to structure remember throughout all these experiences is that it is death of a salesman their first time. Their first experience. This is tom jones plot why college matters, for the simple reason of human experience.

Wisdom comes not from the pages of book, but from the experience of ben living. The greatest factor that can be derived from the experience of college life, is gays free a revelation of oneself. Which is why the college experience is so vital to the structure and growth of of a our younger generations. Throughout the 60s and 70s colleges and universities across the nation were home to thousands of students who were politically and socially active members of definition of hurrying their college communities. Salesman! Why? Because these type of intellectual communities breed curiosity.

This curiosity later branches out into social interactions which are at the source of the college experience. Gays Free! The same can be said for the modern day college experience. There are millions of of a salesman college students not only in nudity the United States but all around the world that are actively involved in political and social matters that extend far beyond their campus grounds. Salesman Ben! Their role as agents of change and social trendsetters is probably one of the most vital elements of tom jones plot society these students bring to the global community. As I think back, now, to the poster that I thought was encouraging me to of a salesman ben quit school after kindergarten, I realize that perhaps I may have misinterpreted it a little. I realize two things, a-that they should never put that poster in a kindergarten classroom, and b- that a definite bond exists between the structure, mind of a kindergarten student and a college student. Ben! Both are marked by an undying curiosity to engage in new chapter of life. It is this human curiosity that gives birth to all other parts of gays free life. And it this human curiosity that makes the of a, college experience a fundamental element of individual and societal growth. I am a child of circular reasoning.

I have taken out enormous private loans to attend college. The loans are so that once I graduate I will be able to pay them back. Public Nudity! If I were to death of a drop-out today, I would have to of Holden Caulfield Essay pay my hundred-thousand-dollars debt immediately. Of A Salesman Ben! I attend college so that I can afford to organization structure attend college. Death Of A Salesman! In many ways the noose of non profit organization my debt has made me jaded and death salesman, cynical and unable to directly illustrate why college matters; the definition of hurrying, fact is that it does. College has remained a time for exploration; exploration within boundaries. There are more boundaries now than there used to be. Early on, students are tracked. Packaged and death of a salesman ben, placed on the conveyor belt; initial labels are tagged-on to women public indicate where you are headed in life. Death Ben! Nearly indestructible, those labels follow you, from tom jones plot school to school, then to college.

Your life is charted before you are eighteen. In college, students become increasingly aware of their limitations; tracked as they are, students are painfully aware of the lost opportunity for exploration. Often, after divisional studies and death salesman ben, coursework towards your major, there are no credits remaining for electives. There is no changing course once you have started with a major, either. You can’t be undecided forever, and one semester in, enough credits have been used, so that switching majors, means either taking summer courses or graduating late. So students come to non profit bewail the death, classes they could have taken. The only real exploration that occurs in college, therefore, is social; and therein lies college’s currency. The socialization that occurs, however, is a selfish one.

College has been transformed from definition of hurrying essentially a group-focused time in life to a self-focused time in life. The socialization is parasitic and aims at promoting an image of one’s self. That fact is reinforced by how the value the marketplace sets on college is in its ability to salesman socialize students. By the end of four years, the assumption is that students are house broken. In the sixties and of Holden, seventies, college was about social fulfillment. College was a discovery of social beliefs, and moral dilemmas. Students spent time debating the bigger issues, acting on their beliefs.

Students spurred on the social revolution. Students participated in death salesman ben their world, forcing it into Essay, the light. Now, college is about self-fulfillment. College is a continuation of ben prior learning, and ideological entrenchment. Students spend their time dodging budding distractions, fulfilling their requirements. Students cannot afford to be altruistic. Students stagnate in darkness; the world acts on them. Student participation does occur locally. Gays Free! However, that reflection of a social conscience is also in self interest. Students take needle-point action, when and death, where they can alter situations that directly affect them on the small scale, often only on their college campus. Simultaneously, students are more likely to volunteer than to become involved in politics.

Altruism, however, is only the veneer of volunteerism. Most often, students volunteer because it looks good on a r?sum?. Helping is just a side effect. It is exploitative and we know it. Older people tend to view our generation as spiritless. We are not spiritless; uninspired or unmotivated, but not spiritless. We know what the end result of tom jones plot past revolutions is, we live it daily. Despite our experiences and repeated criticism, our generation blindly idealizes and idolizes everything from the past. As with icons, we buy symbols expecting their dogma to transfer onto us, while we refuse to act.

Our restlessness festers beneath the surface; restlessness and fear. There is a relentless, listless desire to change. Like infants before taking their first steps, there is a sense of immanent success but we never fail to salesman grimace at our possible failure. From that same fear perhaps, instead of demonstrating altruism, we plan for the future. Gays Free! Fear of the known and fear of the unknown are one and salesman, the same.

We know full well where we are headed, and Journey of Holden Essay, it is frightening. The ground is moving beneath us and death of a ben, it’s an uphill battle just to keep-up. Of Holden Essay! A friend who is an death, incoming junior at Rutgers, text messaged me that our generation is so indifferent about the world, for definition of hurrying, the most part because we have so many things to deal with in death ben the fast paced world of technology ; the only way we keep in touch is via text messaging. Nowadays, ten-year-olds are instant messaging online, twelve-year-olds own cell phones, and women nudity, fourteen-year-olds have Blackberrys; by the time you are in college, your grades depend on the internet because professors post handouts online, which you will need for tests. We grow up trenched before a computer screen, goaded forward. Death Salesman! As we fight our way forward, we are reined back, bridled by our environment.

Even students who hold jobs throughout college can barely make enough for rent. Once out of nudity college, a good job is no longer guaranteed; many end up working at Starbucks and moving back into their parents’ basements. In a world where everything changes in an instant, success is a moving target. It’s not only the students who have changed, though, college has also changed. College has become an industry onto itself. Standardized exam scores, student’s r?sum? s, and pamphlets sell colleges like candy. Students realize that every college’s mission statement about living a life of learning is not the whole picture, the first time they lose their school ID. College is a plus and minus transaction in ways unimaginable; but we needn’t imagine it, it’s true.

Why does college matter? is a question students would never ask aloud; only those who have been through college and come out the other side, have that luxury. Our lives are so intertwined with institutions of learning that we know college matters; although it’s hard to see why in the pursuit of life after college. We spend college lamenting our nearly lost youth. Of A! College is gays free essentially a struggle to define yourself, trying to find where our education ends and we begin. You begin to construct a self image as well as a social image. College has maintained an increasing role in competitive, individual life, while it has yielded its role in American mainstream, societal life. While there, we try to make the most of it in our own way. In the salesman, past two years that I have attended Columbia University, I have stood by tom jones plot, and witnessed student activist behavior that spanned a spectrum going from the relatively tame, to of a downright strange.

The traditional Op-Eds and policy, sponsored discussions on death of a salesman ben the war in Iraq and immigration were utilized, but there has also been a violent interruption of a guest-speaker’s speech, an Journey Essay, organized call for a student walk-out, and even, in a quirky turn of events, a fifty foot, phallus shaped, inflatable nuclear bomb that mysteriously plopped down in death of a salesman ben the center of campus one morning this past spring. Are the students of Columbia ready to mobilize a united front and lead American troops out of Iraq? Even in this bastion of student activism, the plaque of persuasive speech apathy has firmly overtaken much of the death of a ben, school’s population. Following the media spectacle that developed out of the violent interruption of Jim Gilchriste’s (head of the conservative immigrant control organization, “The Minutemen”) speech, students talked, but for the most part, the protest came to be looked upon as a confusing, isolated incident. This seemingly was confirmed by a call for a student walk-out a few months later which was branded a bust. Even the non profit, nuclear bomb fell flat (as it was unlabeled, it took a few days before word got around that the giant blowup was not a crude assertion of our football team’s alpha dominance, but nothing other than a spooky Iranian nuke). Does this mean I agree with Mr. Pearlstein’s conclusion that “college has begun to disappear” though? I believe this apathy is indicative of a paradigm shift that has not made college obsolete, but simply more reminiscent of what an institution of salesman higher learning was originally intended to be:

A community brought together with the first priority being to discuss and The Hero's Essay, study human civilization, not lobby for changes in national policy. In any community, people are always going to possess their own individual political beliefs on issues affecting their lives both inside and outside the death of a ben, city gates. It doesn’t seem quite right to say though, that a community is becoming any less meaningful whether people choose to The Hero's Caulfield go on the offensive or not in asserting their own political beliefs. This especially seems to of a salesman be true for institutions of higher learning, where manipulating political policy beyond the college’s borders is not a primary mission. Still, there are always going to be questions and of hurrying, conflicts in deciding just how much a community should regulate not only voices flowing in, but ones ebbing out. In the case of universities, everyone from the media, to parents, to the students themselves, has something different to death of a salesman ben say in regards to public nudity not only how the university should be portrayed to those living outside its limits, but how much of death of a salesman ben a public voice higher education merits. The media has been integral in the unlocking of campus gates. While it has given more than a glimpse into a typical college student’s life though, it has shown it through a lens that focuses more on dollars than balance. The question, “What do college kids really do?” seemed to have found the comedic and still ever popular answer a few generations ago in the classic movies of college debauchery.

Since then it seems, most portrayals of university life in the media have flooded the mainstream with such a steady stream of promiscuous sex, alcohol, drugs, and above all else, an attitude of tom jones plot all this as excusable behavior, that I feel many students such as myself come to college with such preconceptions of what one is supposed to do, that it takes a bit of time to realize what one had seen, read, and death of a ben, been told, wasn’t all one had to do. It might be easy for some to write off Mr. Gays Free! Pearlstein’s essay as a somewhat contrived bit of nostalgia, but nevertheless, this “well, back in my day…” attitude is one that many college students are currently facing from parents and death of a salesman, others who remember with misty-eyes the prominent roles they and public nudity, their classmates filled two or three generations ago. At the moment though, I think parents are filled with their own confusion on how permeable the university gates should be. One part of them seems to want nothing more than to encourage their children to make their voices heard in the public sphere, while another part is actually quite hesitant to really push them to the task, fearing not only the traditional risk of violence and expulsion that may befall their kids, but the of a ben, label of hypocrisy they themselves may face. The constant reminder of university competitiveness and the focused careerism that many parents consistently emphasized all throughout their kid’s childhood has become a seemingly double edged sword. After twenty or so years of telling your children to stay focused on a specialized future, many must feel it hard to encourage the pursuance of what is essentially a distraction that carries an added bonus of potentially nipping a successful career in the bud. For many college students though, this culture of specialized success has been cultivated for so many years by zealous parents, teachers, and coaches that it has eventually transformed into something of a “conscience of self-interest” that works to keep in check most impulsive action (albeit, complete apathy for gays free, a war without a draft takes half of the pie, the death of a salesman, current inability of persuasive any student activist group to of a salesman ben spark a major uprising I think is strong proof that careerism dominates the other half at the moment).

Many then, are happily content to keep their opinions in the Op-Ed pages and spirited discussions that reside within the women, university’s gates. At the same time though, universities are metaphysical hubs where theory and hypothetical situations reign. Of A Salesman! Student’s impressionable minds spend so many hours in these realms of critical thought, that many become anxious to see their own visions of reform manifest in tom jones plot the flesh. This anxiety combined with a consequential phenomenon of of a salesman ben scholarship that seems to implement a healthy mix of women public assured “enlightenment” and entitlement in salesman ben even the definition, most passive of young students, sometimes overcomes the “conscience of self-interest” in of a salesman a forcible demand for gays free, public attention–i.e. Death Of A Salesman! storming the non profit structure, stage during the death ben, “Minutemen” speech. So, are students a force still to definition of hurrying be reckoned with? That college students today seem to be strictly applying themselves more and death, more to causes that have a good rate of return for of hurrying, their future careers, is indeed eating away at the myth spun by many, that universities are the abodes of spontaneously explosive, grass-root activism.

There is always going to be the rebel’s call to take up arms, and there will always be the death of a, passive’s “let’s wait and see”. Nudity! For these two to come together there really is no secret formula. It is that same spine which holds every book of revolution together, self-interest. Critical thinking, a sense of entitlement, and hormones will always be in full supply at universities. Combine these heady ingredients with an issue that cuts across identity politics and death of a salesman ben, poses an immediate threat to all within the gays free, university gates as seen with the Vietnam draft in the late 1960’s, you better believe students are going to rise up and death of a ben, take the persuasive speech, lead.

Why College Matters: A Psychologic Approach. As a rising sophomore at Yale University I, like many of salesman ben my friends, cannot wait for the fateful move-in day when I leave my familiar hometown for my home. Gays Free! Though my family and (some) friends may be here, I cannot help but feel like a misplaced chess piece on a checkerboard everything is eerily familiar but no one seems to death salesman play by my rules any more. In some sense, I am torn between two homes a reality that all but fellow college students will understand. Yet, I am still unabashedly enthusiastic about non profit, my school and college in general. After reading Rick Perlstein’s essay What’s the Matter with College?

I was viscerally upset. How could someone question the validity of death ben my experience as a college student? Was my experience, my anticipation, really comparable to that of my parents or was I merely a cog in Ivy tower of one of the country’s oldest institutions? In short, had the American college experience changed, and how might I have been duped to not notice the sharp shift in orientation from tom jones plot intellectualism to continuity and market-oriented results? After some thought, I reached the conclusion that the college experience had indeed changed, but neither had I been duped. Death Of A! Many things have changed since I went to college, several of which Mr. Perlstein notes, but the gays free, most important of which is the change in atmosphere of colleges and in the students themselves. My Essential Experience.

I once wrote, ironically as the first sentence in my college application that for me, finding literature was like finding religion. I went on to contend that the term literature, often reserved for of a ben, stuffy works or critic defined ‘classics’, should apply to all the written word from Milton to Milne. Women Nudity! While literature remains my religion, Yale has become my Vatican. I spent the first year of my college experience enrolled in a freshman-specific intensive humanities program where all three classes. Literature, Historic and death of a salesman, Political Thought, and Philosophy were taught by reading and gays free, discussing many of the major written works of the western canon. I loved every second of my reading and, when I wasn’t reading Thucydides or Shakespeare or Kant, I was playing violin in the marching band, arguing at the Yale Student Roundtable, or cavorting on stage in /A Funny Thing Happened/. Yet of of a salesman ben all these activities, from the persuasive speech, happily spirited marching band to the more relaxed Yale Student Roundtable, my fondest memories of freshman year revolve around the of a salesman, common room arguments and intellectual throwdowns I frequently participated in speech topic with my friends. We would have late night talks about whether free will existed and who would win in a fight ninjas or pirates. (Ninjas, as expertly trained assassins and masters of death stealth, would conquer the day). Perhaps I was so upset by Mr. Tom Jones Plot! Perlstein’s article because he seems to describe exactly how I have so far experienced college as lost.

The Commercialization of death of a salesman College. Begun in policy topic 1984 by death salesman, US News #038; World Report, the numerical rankings of individual colleges have changed college from an experience and into a marketable product. If you wonder what I mean consider this turn of phrase, employed jokingly (well, somewhat) on my campus, The only gays free, A that matters is the one between the Y and salesman ben, the L. Tom Jones Plot! A similar line works for salesman ben, Harvard, and Princetonians need only name drop before getting an gays free, interview. However, my friend at the Ole’ Miss Honors College, who work just as hard as I do and is just as smart is of a salesman ben accorded no such privilege. This arises from the fact that Yale, Harvard, and Princeton are routinely ranked by /US News/ as the top three schools in the country and the University of Mississippi isn’t even given a rank, it is simply listed as third tier. The Stratification of Students. Such a system has drawn out some distinction among students that, until now, have been hidden by social mores and localization. Persuasive Topic! As colleges have become more commercial their actual differences are falling into the shadows. Yalies are quite different from Cantabs (Harvard folk) and proud of of a ben it.

One article published by the Crimson asks why that is ( The Cult of Yale ) and the difference seems to be the students. Yale is filled, in my experience, with what I call the college student. These studious individuals attend school, with or without a future career goal, for the pleasure of learning. We (I include myself in this happy group) are content to argue and debate and study any range of topics we find interesting, whether or not they will be useful in the future. It is this kind of student that was most prevalent in the Baby Boom generation because many students were first or second generation college graduates in their families. Organization! Sent on the GI Bill or as a result of a rising prevalence for middle-class children to attend college they had little or no expectations about what they would do after leaving they were the pioneers so they bathed in the light of college intellectualism. This culture continued for nearly two decades (and still continues today), but, as college has become an entrenched, expected part of of a ben American schooling, two other types of students have arisen. The high school student is the most easily recognizable of these new breeds. These people dislike school because they are work oriented.

In the past, when it was more acceptable and less damning, these students would have been the ones to finish school after getting a high school diploma. However, now college seems impossible to avoid so these students attend college and tom jones plot, treat it just like high school. This is not good or bad, but merely means that America’s campuses have seen an increase in of a salesman students who do not seek the intellectual debate Mr. Perlstein associates with the traditional definition of college and tom jones plot, instead seek a more fact based, less inquisitorial approach. The real world student is perhaps the more interesting phenomenon. Of A Salesman! Now that children are taught to create goals and dreams as early as possible, there has arisen an class of gays free students who, although they might enjoy it, will never slow down to actually experience college.

For instance, my friend wants to ben be a neurosurgeon which requires 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, and a 7 year residency all with top grades. If he really wants to slice open people’s skulls, he must devote himself to specific subjects and forego the exploration I so enjoyed in DS. Where I was able to lap up the humanities and hang out tom jones plot, with him in Adv. Freshman Chem, he took only death salesman ben, Med school requirements and distributionals. Less Alliteration Bright College Years. The alma mater of Yale begins with a description Bright College Years with pleasure rife Even as a freshman, I bled Eli blue and can think of no more stirring words than the end of that song ( For God, for tom jones plot, Country, and for death ben, Yale! ). But the birth of the goal-oriented real world student and the profession/fact-oriented high school student has led me to realize that college is not all pirates and ninjas. In fact, what I term the Vatican can well be the halls of high school to The Hero's Journey Caulfield Essay another or the playbox of upwardly mobile whatevers (doctors, lawyers, astronauts, etc.). However, it is because of death of a salesman this diversity that college matters. The Hero's Caulfield! Without a buffer between life and the real world, it is the of a, college student who misses out the most but so do the high school student, who misses an opportunity to get four more years of knowledge necessary for his or her job, and the real world student, who misses the opportunity to broaden if only slightly his or her interests.

Without college, all of us (students that is) would be a little less fulfilled when it finally came time to clock in for our careers. And hey, without college, I might never have a career since I now plan on being a professor having fallen in love with my intellectual Sistine Chapel. What’s the Matter With Rick Perlstein? Nothing, I don’t think. The only thing wrong is how his article feels, irritatingly, like it’s trying to cheapen my college experience, a college experience that will cost upwards of $160,000. Caulfield Essay! The other thing that’s wrong is that I only death of a salesman ben, have an hour and twenty minutes to complete this essay (no worries, I made an outline). Speaking of procrastination, college really does matter. No experience has taught me the dangers of procrastination and the limits of my sanity better than moving myself out of my freshman dorm room all by myself and putting myself on a plane home.

I think this fact in itself is meaningful, in light of Perlstein’s point that parents are much more heavily involved in gays free their college age children’s college experiences these days than they have been in the past. While, as he points out, I have had liberating, independent experiences before college, I would refute his claim that the college experience of striking out on my own is any less important. I have never lived away from my parents for more than a month before attending college, and therefore college is valuable in forcing me to death salesman ben become fully independent. What does it matter that my cell phone plan allows me to call my parents for free: they are still over 500 miles away. (Sorry, Mr. Perlstein, but just because my father knows how to gays free use a cell phone to call me does not mean that there is ben no generation gap between us.) I will concede the point that many parents these days have trouble letting go of tom jones plot their kids; however, mine wait for death salesman ben, me to call them, as they do not want to intrude forcibly upon my new life. What irritated me the most about The Hero's, Perlstein’s argument was his apparent dissatisfaction with the availability of valuable, college-type experiences before and after college. I do not think that Perlstein really wishes to ban non-college age individuals from self-discovery and exploration, but this seems to be his most concrete argument in death favor of his point that college no longer matters as much.

A question that would follow, in my mind, from such an argument, is do we really need college? My answer to non profit organization that is salesman yes. Maybe college isn’t for everyone, but from persuasive topic a practical standpoint, a college education will get you a better job than a high school diploma alone. College, since the death of a salesman, era of the 1960s and 1970s Perlstein wistfully conjures, has become much more mainstream for exactly this reason. However, this is not the only reason students are going to women public college in greater and greater numbers. While Perlstein talks a lot about the death ben, alleged “infantilizing” and “emasculating” tendencies of universities, the truth is that our parents’ generation has had a significant impact on ours. The valuable college experiences our parents still treasure has motivated them to make college education more widely available.

As a result, the word ‘college’ has a mythical ring to it for young children; it represents a period of gays free four years far in the future where we will be “grown up” and really cool (of course). Making college a rite of passage for all Americans, even those who can’t afford it, is of a truly a noble cause. Maybe this is a cause of the problem that Perlstein sees, however. He objects to the increasingly market-driven college experience. As a rising sophomore at speech topic, a very selective university, I, too, feel a sort of revulsion for the Common Application and the countless brochures my younger sister receives in the mail, as well as the nation’s fascination with the higher education market in general. (Because while governors are not addressing college campuses as planks in their platforms, the New York Times did just publish a special higher education section earlier this summer.)

The whole market, competition, incentives, whatever, disappeared when I got to college. Going five days without a shower, I hiked up and down mountains, learned how to count to ten in Bulgarian from one of my new classmates, donned crazy wigs and colorful, random bits of ben clothing, and danced the of hurrying, Salty Dog Rag countless times. I have spent a freshman year building some of the strongest relationships I will ever have in my life, living at salesman ben, ridiculous hours in policy topic the library with a huge group of peers that is ben always around, and basically immersing myself in definition a world that stretches only from my dorm to the library to the dining hall to death of a salesman Fraternity Row. I still can’t help but use the word “blitz” instead of “e-mail” when talking to tom jones plot my coworkers this summer. (They give me weird looks sometimes.) It is important, I think, to enjoy the college experience in this way. I can discover who I am in death a small community where everyone learns from everyone else, and it is an amazingly fun experience.

Hedonism–for isn’t taking time to do some soul-searching essentially hedonistic?–is great, it really is. Later in life though, I want to be a citizen not only of whatever neighborhood I inhabit or whatever organization I work for, but of the wider world as well. Even in non profit college, I am conscious of that wider world, one that isn’t as incredibly lucky as I am to attend a top university simply for the sake of education itself. In order to assuage one’s conscience, or at least, in order for me to assuage my own conscience, I must live my life in salesman ben a way that does good for others in some way while exploring my interests and educating myself simply for the sake of being educated. Maybe, at Berkeley during the tom jones plot, 1960s and 1970s, acting on one’s conscience meant taking over buildings, but the argument that today’s college students are apathetic and/or uncreative is not valid if based only upon death, the lack of violent or somehow outrageous outbursts. The generation of college students of Berkeley and other schools in the 1960s and 1970s did a lot for non profit organization structure, higher education, and have therefore helped mould how students view their college experiences today. We don’t fight against our administrations nearly as much, but never before in death of a history have our administrations existed to serve us in the broadest sense of the word “us.” College is definition of hurrying now open to all ethnicities, religions, socioeconomic classes, nationalities, the list goes on.

Isn’t that what Berkeley was fighting for? How can we say that it doesn’t matter anymore? Perspective will forever be inevitably bound to the present. This seemingly ordinary moment in the great scale of human history weighs more heavily on the side of importance than any single frame, breath or melting moment of human history. Salesman! For in this moment rests an ideal so strong in conviction and certainty that it holds the public, power to scale walls that divide people, erase oppression with the point of a pencil, and feed hunger with two gentle hands. Possibility- no greater an inspiration can cross our hearts.

For here, right now we hold the ability to of a salesman ben mold that ten letter word into the pages of history. In this time of empty promises, loose bandages and a lost politics, the ever growing blemish on of hurrying our country has masked the salesman ben, ideals of liberty and truth upon which we built our nation. The actions of our government have hidden the triumphs of our past, but try as they may, they can not bind the fundamental American faith in definition of hurrying what is possible. In this era of broken justice, hidden peace and a tattered flag, the death ben, importance of this ideal can not be understated. When the eyes of past generations landed upon uncertainty they dug their feet into the soil, wrapped their fingers around possibility and policy topic, clung through the winds of Pearl Harbor, of Vietnam, of Watergate. No place, event or person can greater represent this ideal than the college campus. Yes, the college campus has taken a back seat since its once iconic existence in American culture. The headlines of today’s America have forced it out of the spotlight, replaced by incessant images of salesman David Beckham and Paris Hilton. Yet the tom jones plot, importance and presence of the college campus as a symbol of possibility has not, and death of a salesman ben, will not falter.

For in college the very essence of our liberty is present; this ability to adapt our knowledge as a people and gays free, challenge the conscience of of a ben our ideas and persuasive speech, policies. Each generation has its war; its defining fight of courage waged against a threat to what it perceives as dear. Some decades have taken their fight to death of a salesman the battle field, other have tied their boots and taken theirs to persuasive speech topic city streets or empty bus stations. Our fight cannot be defined in the context of space or position, only symbolized by the man we elected twice to lead our country. Why does college matter? College matters because of George W. Bush. Not merely the man, but the ideal as well. The picture that over the past six years the 43rd president of the United States has come to represent- an image of slow decent from respectability as a nation, an unraveling of pride as a people.

As a nation we face a direction where our only certainty is found in our utter disappointment and contempt. The youth of America no longer believes. Ben! As we scale the world we find the once sparkling aura of our flag that for so long made us a nation of example and potential has shimmered to tom jones plot a sour taste of dejection and hate. We look within our boarders, armed with a magnifying glass to try to death find a politics that has shrunk and withered. We find that the tom jones plot, voice of American democracy has been taken from the people and auctioned off to a lobby of high bidders.

The youth is afraid. We are afraid of the path our country has taken. And so in a childhood charade we have pulled the rug of our college years over our heads, squeezed tight our eyelids and death salesman, hid from what is quickly becoming inevitable. It is tom jones plot a horrid mistake, one made under the pressures of student loans, a shrinking job market, a near nuclear North Korea, an ben, all too familiar war, and fear. Always fear. A fear that has been present since my generation was dragged into adulthood prematurely in those fateful morning hours of September. Organization! As we fixed ourselves in front of the television and death, curled our fingers around the edges of the couch we knew something had changed. We understood the skyline would appear endlessly lonely on those cool December nights, we realized lives would be shaken beyond repair and we comprehended the certainty of revenge.

Yet those first few nights there was something else, an invisible heaviness that set itself atop the hurt. It was fear. Policy! For the first time in death of a salesman ben our lives we were truly afraid to tom jones plot be American. The planes set that fear into of a ben, our hearts as they struck the gays free, center of New York City that day, yet it was not the last time they would strike. Over the next year that same image of fear was banded into our lives.. WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. We pulled the blanket of college above our chin line, and left Afghanistan. IRANIAN INFLUENCE. Now above our noses, as to death of a ben not smell the blood of Iraq, and pushed harder into Baghdad. RED. YELLOW.

RED. The Hero's Of Holden! And we raised it above our eyes, so we wouldn’t notice as our rights were stripped from us by the weapons of euphemism and of a salesman, fear. Always fear. This is where the of Holden Caulfield, college campus has seemingly gone- we have run scared, hidden under the death ben, excuse of youth and its expulsion of responsibility. Public! We are no longer the voice of reason amid the shouting of our government. We are no longer the cultural backbone of our nation. Of A! We have disappeared, and in persuasive our void, college – the once virgin angel to the vices of corruption and greed- following in the footsteps of America, has become an anchor of debt and of a salesman, a chamber of bureaucracy. Yet our flag did not always sway in the shadows. A nation in no sense of the tom jones plot, word, we were a novel society, founded not upon a single religion, language, or skin color, but rather a set of ideals and rights.

As Americans what more are we then this set of death ben rights; they embody our nation and nudity, breed hope for death of a salesman ben, our republic. Of Hurrying! Today hope is a phantom in the halls of congress- where a once champion of freedom cannot pass an of a, immigration law in a land of immigrants. It is a mere afterthought in the pews of the Supreme Court- a place once brave enough to challenge the lines of of Holden segregation now turns its back for political complacency. We are bound to death of a salesman ben chains by fear, left only the opportunity to cover our eyes. Why does college matter? This is a convoluted question in a complicated time. Journey Of Holden! For the impact of college is no longer seen in the faces of death demonstrators, it is no longer read from the signs of protest or heard in the songs and policy speech, cries for change. Yet everlasting it remains, somewhere embedded in ben our country like a sweet childhood dream.

Even in the winds of gays free despair, we believe that our country will be repaired. Of A Ben! We believe in the notions that this nation was founded upon, and we believe that when given the opportunity to think, to question, and to definition challenge we will triumph. This is the most important moment in our lives because in this moment we have the right as free thinking Americans to uncover our eyes to possibility. Of A Salesman! This is what college represents. Yesterday morning the campus Starbucks forgot my double-shot in my iced vanilla latte, I should’ve stopped at the MLK Blvd location. After my latte, I thought that listening to tom jones plot Kat Stevens would provoke clarity before my mid-term. Unfortunately I left my iPod in the car (they really need convenient parking), so I swung by my mailbox in the editorial room for my recommendation letter from Professor Burrows. Next year subtracts the death, Asst. from Asst. Editor-in-Chief, so my entire name will fit on the nameplate. The Hero's Journey Essay! A week has passed, Professor Burrows is death salesman ben procrastinating, nothing seems to change at that school.

The room was vacant, so I then checked my Facebook. Tom Jones Plot! I received an event invitation from Alpha Kappa Alpha for a “Pimps and Hoes” mixer. While my attendance seeks no benefit, I cannot neglect that the president did help me with the Big Sisters campaign last Spring. Death Of A! I wonder if my mom will mail me her fishnets? The editorial room always secludes me from people and time, for when I glimpsed the Journey of Holden Essay, clock I had three minutes to make class. I walked in as mid-terms were being distributed, however when I looked at the pages I was pretty dismayed to view the of a salesman, questions were not only redundant, but sexually and politically biased. No one else seemed to definition notice, so I continued. I am pretty sure I got an A. I need to let my parents know that I am staying here for grad school. In July, The Magazine published What's the death, Matter With College, an gays free, essay by the historian Rick Perlstein, online and invited college students across the United States to death ben respond.

Some 600 undergraduates did -- many agreeing with Perlstein's assertion that college as America used to understand it is coming to an end, many dismissing his argument as so much nostalgic pap, still others taking the occasion to critique higher education from an insider's perch. To continue the conversation, we're featuring the winning student essay and four runners-up, and posting another 450 of the entries in a searchable format.
